I thought the OP was looking for greatest riffs
+1
Seems a few are just sticking up their favourite rock songs!
Intro to This Charming Man
Special mention to How Soon is Now? as well, but that's not really a riff.
Seven Nation Army.
day tripper or how many more times
Thunderstruck by AC/DC.
Little Sister; Queens of the Stone Age.
Also, there is only one Riff - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Sluggy_Freelance#Riff
Breadfan by Budgie
Bliss by Th' Dudes
Marquee Moon by Television, though I'm not sure you'd call it a riff
Weep Woman Weep by Sticky Filth
D.O.A and Jello Biafra
Full metal jackoff
Most of the riffs from Fu Manchu's King of the Road, I'm Search of or California Crossing albums. It's like they used a catchy riff generator on every track.
The Great Barrier Riff.
+1 for Walk by Pantera, so boneheaded but it wasn't supposed to be clever.
You Drove Me To It by Hell Is For Heroes. It's like a demo track for a triple rectifier.
I'll Find You by Hundred Reasons, one of the best set starters ever written.
No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age?
or...
No Parisienne Walkway yet?
whats the remit for suggestions?
most complex skills shown or most stay in your head hook?
Roxette by Dr Feelgood or even short and sweet Queen Bitch seeing as we have a Bowie Hunky Dory thread nearby
Not sure which one, but it's definitely Sabbath. Probably "Black Sabbath" (the song) for me - never have three notes sounded so sinister and foreboding, but honourable mentions for Iron Man, War Pigs and Sweetleaf.
For those liking things a little less heavy, Brian May's had a few, but rather than his better known ones, I'd go with "Son and Daughter" from Queen's first, eponymous album.
Sunshine of You Love is a good one (Cream).
Beatles - Day Tripper?
Blur - Song 2?
That Kasabian one that the crowd sing back when they play it live (can't remember the name, the one off the first album that goes "Boom! Na nah nah nan nah na-nah Boom! Nah nah nah na-nah na-nah"
Actually scratch all of the above because I've just remembered the riff to end all "which riff" arguments, as played by the largest assembly of A-list bass players (and some others) probably ever assembled:
whats the remit for suggestions?
So far it seems to be riffs, licks and chord progressions
Beat it by [s]Michael Jackson Van Halen[/s]
Steve Lukather

greatest riff
Queens of the Stone age - Everybody knows
The Kinks - Big Sky
Neil Young - Hey hey my my
Dream Theatre- Honor thy Father
Impossible to answer, and so many genres. All the best rock/metal riffs were done years ago and now get recycled with regularity.
Tony Iommi will spoil you for choice. I like Symptom Of The Universe very much. Iron Man
The Troggs 'Wild Thing' must surely be The Proto-Riff?
Killing Joke's 'Eighties' riff that was borrowed and slowed down by Nirvana to then become anthemic.
AC/DC 'Highway to Hell' intro
Led Zep's Jimmy Page, like Iommi, gave us so many it's impossible to choose. Notable mentions are the galloping, explosive goodness of both 'Achilles Last Stand' and 'Immigrant Song'
Elder - 'Lore' has become a recent favourite.
Not enough indie riffage suggested so far...
Killing Joke - Eighties
Jumping Jack Flash.
Killing Joke - Eighties
Nah, prefer Life Goes On by The Damned 😉
Plug in Baby - Muse
Hüsker Dü: Don't want to know.
Apollo 440: Ain't talking bout dub.
Ratatat: Cream on chrome.
Not enough indie riffage suggested so far...
For indie riffage of that ilk, pretty much anything by Dinosaur Jr.
Summer breeze ...isley brothers
Indie riff for me goes to British Sea Power - 'Machineries of Joy'
It's a wistful hook/refrain (riff-rain?), gets in my head with an irresistible and perfect motorik beat that goes on and on. And it's about cycling.
Apollo 440: Ain't talking bout dub.
Eddie wants a word......
Also, Crazy Train. But is it the intro riff, or the second intro riff, or the main choo choo train riff?
New Rose is a good one.
See also...
pretty much anything by Dinosaur Jr.
Oh yes, one of the best intros like, ever...
Amon Düül II - Archangel Thunderbird -
Take your pick from Black Sabbath.
I'll go for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or maybe Supernaut or how about St Vitus Dance.
Sabbath Sign of the southern cross, in particular the Live eEil version.
More than a feeling, kinks, Gary Numan Cars, Nile Rodgers, Wilko to name but a few
T.Rex - 20th Century boy
Have we had Jumpin' Jack Flash?
Mick Jagger's new missus joined the band now?
It is a very good shout BTW.
Intro to Dirty Deeds
That's youtube sensation Jess Greenberg. I can't quite decide why she's so popular
Neil Young - Hurricane
Also partial to many mentioned and a couple not
Lynard Skynard - Freebird
Led Zepplin - Whisky in the Jar
Also partial to some Joe Bonamassa noodlin
Led Zepplin - Whisky in the Jar
Wut?
Killed by the dashboard light - Motorloaf.
My nomination - Anathema, Fragile dreams
There's a few people who don't know what a riff is.
Thin Lizzie
Cowboy Song
Hes bananas but he cant half play the guitar. Ted Nugent - Stranglehold
Have to put Sweet child of mine in any catchy riff thread!
For reference...
a short repeated phrase in popular music and jazz, typically used as an introduction or refrain in a song
Should I stay or should I go. Clash
(a good riff doesn't need a link. Just saying it and you should hear it in your head. Du du du du da da da da, diddly... Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh, dadalah!...)
Stiff little fingers- alternative ulster
Have we had Jumpin' Jack Flash?
Yes. Although that version is better looking than Keith's 🙂
pretty much anything by Dinosaur Jr.
So many. Sooooo many!
I see your riff and give you a classic riff and a great solo.
Mind you, Day Tripper was a good call.
Thin Lizzy - Still In Love With You
