where to start?

At the back page and read towards the front.

I was told after a rather baffling half hour trying to read one of the Japanese ones my son had bought the 'right' way round.

Not so sure about Marvel Zombies, I think that works better if you're a fan of the Marvel Universe to start with. The Walking Dead is awesome, DMZ is really good, Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns (but again that works better if you know a little bit about Batman).

Akira is really good, Moore's From Hell is hard going in places but well worth it.

Blankets by Craig Thompson is great, as is Maus by Art Spiegleman, Jar of Fools by Jason Lutes...

There really are loads.

Oh and Calvin and Hobbes. I LOVE Calvin and Hobbes.

"Hard Boiled" is a good read, as is "Y The Last Man" and "Preacher".

well anything that have 'gaiman, miller, mignola, jim lee' written on the cover is a good bet.
Then you have to tell us more about your taste.

thanks for all the suggestions everyone 😀 flyingmonkeycorps i must admit to knowing some of batman's history (he is one of my favourite superheros/i blame the classic 60's series i watched growing up) i must admit to liking the character a lot more when i saw the first batman film (with big jack and beetlejuice keaton 😉 i liked the darker edge to his character.i am definitely going to get some of frank miller's batman novels 🙂 EDIT i love most types of sci fi/fantasy.some of my favourite films range from the crow (which has to be my all time favourite film r.i.p brandon 🙁 to the hulk, star wars, batman, alien films (well first 2 anyhoo) time bandits, labyrinth, the hobbit/lotr and various others. 🙂

You'll love The Dark Knight Returns then, same for Year One. Arkham Asylum is pretty amazing too.

You do know The Crow was a graphic novel first right?

Akira is amazing!

Akira isn't a comics, it's a manga. Probably one of the very first mainstream manga where characters actually look like japanese... But a manga nontehless

anything you can find by Vaughn or Mark Bode.. just for the originality of the artwork if nothing else..

Vaughn's been dead for many years now but the stuff he was doing in the '60s truly changed the world..

Seriously puts the mainstream formulaic stuff to shame..

A little shame to admit this, particularly online but I’m a big comic graphic novel collector.

Here's some to get on with.

The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller cannot be avoided - possibly the best graphic novel ever written.

The Joker - ‘Devils Advocate’

Batman - ‘A Death in the Family’

Any of ‘The Grendel Tales’

Night Raven - ‘House of Cards’

Marshall Law - ‘Fear and Loathing’

Turf - Jonathan Ross’s foray into comic writing.

Aliens vol. 2

Some more

Transmetropolitan,

Sin City,

and not really sci-fi or superhero stuff, the works of Daniel Clowes.

I'd start with Watchmen though.

Well still this is when I like the precision of the french language 😉
Depending upon it's origin, it's a comics book, a manga or a bd 😉
Not JUST a graphic novel.

Slaine - if only for Bisley's artwork in the later books.

Hewlett and Milligan did some ace stuff early doors too.

Torqemanda is also pretty good.

Agreed. What about Clint Langley's ABC Warriors & Slaine art - Superb.

I'd agree with all the above except i'd pass on Sandman. I find it really dull and way to "80s Goth" for my taste.

If your over 40 and still hanker after Siouxsie Sioux or an emo under 20 then it'd be OK, but otherwise skip it.

(Waits for Sandman fans to get all upset.....)

Preacher and, since you like scifi, Transmetropolitan. I don't like comics that much tbh but these were fantastic. Not flawless, Preacher goes off in the middle and Transmetropolitan gets in a few wee ruts, but still both fantastic.

My brother would recommend you Nicolai Dante and recent Slaine... But the problem with Slaine is that there's about 10 years of not-particularily-good to deal with before you get to the relatively recent, gobsmackingly beautiful ones.

A lot has been said already.

100% by Paul Pope is quite unusual and short too, dystopian future where instead of simply watching girls strip they have sensors which allow you to view their internal organs. It's poignant, not gratuitous and it's merely a fraction of the story.

Looks like this:

Hard Boiled by Frank Miller is great, as is Sin City and his Batman series. Akira is essential. I don't care what semantic piffle has been written about Manga; read some. Alan Moore is obviously a comic veteran too.

I quite like Monkey vs Robot for something different. Check out your local library, they usually have a section.
