I don't know if there is an answer to this.
If a word has a prefix and a suffix, what's the bit in the middle called? I need something better that 'middle bit'.

The "root"?
That's something that seems to have stuck from language lessons at school. That was over forty years ago so probably isn't accurate.

There are also infixes, but they are always obscenities. E.g. Abso****inglutely.
