Jim Jack's in Peebles would be first choice for actual chippy teas, if close enough.
My son is a bit of a kebab connoisseur and he rates the ones from the Inners takeaway as good as any he's had in Edinburgh.
Chippywise you need to got to Jim Jacks in Peebles.
Thats the one down the northgate not the one on the highstreet.

I quite like the chips out of the one on the high street, they're not <good> exactly but they're pretty classic. You can really feel the grease hitting your arteries.

I'm not one to throw away food but I binned over half of the last fish and chips I had from it. Joe Barnes also posted a scathing review on Instagram a couple of weeks ago

Is not the same...but there's some fine fish n chips restaurants where you can order a cuppa tea with the meal.

The Inners high street one seems like a typical Scottish chippy. It does everything but the battered fish isn't good. Their kebabs are decent though and a mate says their Pizza supper is correct.

I specifically meant restaurant which have fish and chips on the menu rather than a chippy that has seating.
With sit down chippy tea acceptable additions are.
- Tartare sauce
- Cup of tea
- Buttered bread
- Wedge of lemon

To be fair the inverse is more of a problem.
Asking for a fish supper down south has given me some pretty blank expressions.
You used to be able to sit down in Jim jacks, not sure if you still can. They used to close at 9pm, think they still do which is why we go to the main st one most times. To be fair to the one in Inners we never get fish from there, it's always pizza/kebabs with a portion of chips if we're really hungry. Then we go to Durty Brewers where they'll let you eat your food with a pint

But a bench on the green watching the river is more akin to the harbour wall experience. Just watch out for a red dog that knows people sitting on benches eat chips... I normally get her before she mooches you to submission.

I'm presuming compared to England where 'fish and chips' is typically one piece of fish and some chips - a fish supper is fish and chips and is commonly two pieces of fish rather than one, so you'll often get the option of a 'small fish supper' with one piece of fish.
However 'single fish' usually means fish without the chips and can often also mean two pieces of fish as two pieces of fish is considered a single portion.
Fish and chip shops doing things slightly differently to what you're used to seems to be one of the last bits of local / regional difference in the UK that actually makes it feels like you've travelled somewhere. The avialability or otherwise of gravy, the mountains of Scraps in the northeast. There are some very poor interpretations of Mushy Peas. I was once encouraged to divert off the M6 on trip from Brighton to Inverness just to experience Wolverhampton's Orange Chips
I grew up on the edge of the Fylde which is pretty much the epicentre of Fish and Chip shops and still adjusting to Scottish Fish:Chip ratios even after more than 30 years, especially in glasgow where theres never, ever, enough chips.

Single piece of fish or two is just a portion thing not specifically two pieces. Add chips and its a supper.
If you are 90 you ask for a mini fish supper etc.
And there is never ever ever enough chips.
I still find not being able to get a chip butty when I'm in the south distressing. But then I'm a heathen and despite being from the north east of England have curry sauce not gravey.
