Have seen a few people with these claiming they stop your screen breaking.  I can’t see how they can work.

A thin plastic screen protector stops the screen underneath getting scratched.  if you drop your phone and put a shock through the screen surely the underlying glass is not going to be saved by another piece stuck to the front of it?

They definitely do.

No idea how though.

They'll reduce the likelihood of the screen breaking, not by a huge amount though.
ITs the same principle as using specialist applied films to glazing in specific areas as it stops broken glass from becoming a risk to nearby people.

I have one on my iPhone - the protector has a few chips on the edges, but the screen is unmarked (apart from the crack in the corner from when it fell out of my pocket - which was the reason for putting a protector on!)

Are you talking about 'bomb glass' films? They don't stop the glass breaking, just keep the shattered stuff from flying around.

Claim with these screen protectors is that the overlay breaks sacrificially and saves the glass underneath.  I've seen someone with a broken protector and intact screen but of course that proves nothing!

Not sure how they work but one on my S7 cracked right acros screen and chipped on edge. Mine is a Zagg, peel off no problem leaving screen under intact.

Zagg ones have lifetime warranty so was replaced under warranty for cost of postage and sent the original back in freepost envelope.

Another not sure how they work here.... but they do.

A mate thought he'd trashed his couple of month old Garmin after a tumble and the screen resembling something like a spider web. He peeled off the glass protector he'd fitted and the Garmin glass was totally intact and with not a single mark on it. It also seems to resist scratching from use too.

I’ve broken 3 glass laminates now but my screen is perfect every time I’ve checked before applying a new one. Mine are only cheap ebay ones, buy one get on free type cheap.

We run them as a family and all my work office phones - 12 of all makes in total.

We occasionally break the protectors, never a screen.

My office down south don't issue them. They have four broken iPhones in the cupboard.

I bought my phone as refurbished so don't know what's on it - but I cracked the screen yesterday and the cracks all seem to be in a lower layer, ie, the outer surface is smooth where I can see the cracks. So I guess there's a protector holding the screen together - it still works, apart from not being able to use the touch screen where the cracks are.

I think having the extra layer, which is thicker than a plastic film, takes the brunt of any impact, and absorbs the energy, saving the actual screen from damage.
They’re certainly better than a plastic film, they don’t scratch so readily, and are more slippery and nicer than plastic film to use.
Seeing how cheap they are, and easy to apply, it’s daft not to use one.

A normal screen is actually quite strong. However what it's not good at is point impact - and that's typically what results in screen breakages. A glass screen protector will spread out a point impact so it's not a point impact on the screen underneath (whilst sacrificing itself). A plastic screen protector being soft doesn't provide the same protection - a point impact will still be a point impact on the screen. Of course a bigger impact will still break the screen, but most screen breakages aren't caused by those.

Could it Ben the same principle as cycle helmets in that they break first, and the energy absorbed during that break reduces the chance that the stronger glass underneath is exposed to a lower energy?

Thank you, that’s sort of what I was getting at, but not really being clear on the point impact.
Makes perfect sense. 😊

The screen protector and a gel case has so far kept my phone intact despite dropping it many times. Onto my 4th screen protector and glad I have them.

As above, they work well.  Plus you can get them for smart watches etc. Now as well
