OK, so I'm off the caffine as of two hours ago.

How bad am I going to feel and for how long?

I have a feeling this could be quite tricky, but on looking at what my diet coke habit (as in it's about all I drink) is doing to me I think it's worth it.

Try drinking caffeine free pop and coffee - your brain might think it's still getting it and let you down easily.

Or it may absolutely throw a wobbler with you and shut down for a few days.

It depends on how sensitive you are to caffeine TBH. Diet coke doesn't have that much in (maybe half a coffee cup's worth), also depends on how much you were drinking.

You may feel a bit fidgety, or tense for a bit, but you're probably not going to get the shakes, or start blacking out.

what's the advantage of giving up coffee?
don't understand the point in giving it up tbh.
apparently caffeine mobilises fatty acids in the body.

Caffeine isn't terrible for you but it does affect heart rate - if you have a dicky ticker you are generally told to cut down.

It's mainly because I drink it in diet drinks, which are pretty bad, phosphoric acid, sweeteners etc.

Because caffeine doesn't have the anti-social side effects of other drugs - alcohol, crack etc people tend to underestimate how highly addictive and powerful it is 🙂

If going cold turkey headaches (or rather one very loooong headache) are very likely for 2 - 3 days. Use Paracetamol. Main problem is then getting over the slumps that you've hidden with caffeine. Takes a while but the body sorts itself out. Find something else to drink as a replacement. Falling asleep in afternoon just means you're an old f**t :))

Paul (chronic relapsing old f**t caffeine addict)

I do this every so often and tend to have low level headaches a feeling of lethargy and a craving for a decent coffee for about 2 weeks. Generally I feel crap and have be feeling mentally strong to try and get through it.

Then one day you realise you feel pretty good.

I tend to do it at the same time as giving up alcohol and doing more riding/training which is a bit mad I suppose.

It's not the caffeine itself that's bad (in moderation at least), it's the diet drinks more than anything. Coffee is the drink of the Gods, I couldn't imagine a world without it. Diet Coke I could easliy manage without...

Headaches mainly, and last time I gave up (I've been caffeine free or very low intake for about a year and a half) I only had headaches for two or three days. Mind you, there was nothing low-level about them, they were stinkers. After they passed I felt strangely 'normal' again though, and have almost no desire to return to full strength caffeinated drinks at all. Ever. Ok, occasionally I get the urge, but I can use it as a boost when I really need it now.

Coffee is a diuretic too - you'll probably wee a bit less often.

As someone who OD'd on caffeine in my younger days, too much is bad. In moderation, no big deal. IIRC a cup of tea has more caffeine in it.

As someone who never drinks tea or coffee, I find the effects of occasional caffeine intake quite marked. For example, if I've got to drive somewhere at 4.00am I just down a Redbull or similar and I'm buzzing for the rest of the morning...

IIRC a cup of tea has more caffeine in it.

There's about half as much caffeine in a cup of tea as in a cup of coffee.

There's more caffeine in a pound of tea leaves as there is in a pound of coffee beans, but not in a cup.

Surely that all depends on how long you leave the tea to steep?

I'd agree with the estimates above - I gave up all caffine about 3 years ago - the first two weeks were the worst - but after a couple of months you won't miss it

I gave up all caffeine for no particular reason other than to 'give it a go' in August and now just drink fruit tea (twinings).

Had the usual headache after a few days but paracetomol got me thru those and i havent looked back.

It had the added unforeseen benefit of me losing more than ten pounds in weight too. I was 13 st 12 lbs but now hover around 13st to 13st 3lb. No, I didn't change anything else in my diet 8)

I did seem to suffer a loss of power on my bike but don't know if this was just a mental thing. After putting in more miles over the next few months I felt okay again.

drinking coffee significantly reduces the chance of Alzheimers' disease.

i do like a nice drop of Chinese tea as well though. the stuff that looks like twigs in hot water.
