I normally run an insert on the rear and I'm a shade under 80kg, so I'm quite tempted.

Yikes that is cheap

I looked at these a few weeks ago but decided a bit too narrow for me

So the other day I bought the Hunt xc ones which they've got reduced to £750ish (man-maths)

Worth it for the warranty I think, and (mainly) very positive reviews for them

I'm now thinking of just getting a pair of Pro 5 DT Swiss 391 hand built wheels for about £570.

Almost too much choice on wheels it would seem.

Mind you, I've had crappy experiences of installing tyres tubeless on the last three DT Swiss rimmed wheelsets I've had.

Maybe the Hunts then?

391s were super easy with barzos and mezcals for me tubeless. Same with my 421s and 481s

I find that Schwalbe and Maxxis tyres to be a relatively loose fit on DT Swiss rims, and had to add extra layers of tape to get a seal. With Stans rims that was never an issue, in fact they were the opposite and were a tight fit. Shame that Stans rims dent so easily IME.

Ah, I've not tried either of those other than schwable CX tyres.

Looks like it depends on the freehub type - XD is same price (before discount) on both.

oh interesting, i wasn't aware of that, which unfortunately is more expensive than the MS freehub, so better to buy MS via the website, XD via ebay

Just going by aesthetics, these look very similar to the wheels sold on aliexpress by the likes of elite wheels etc. Pillar spokes, straighpull centrelock own brand hubs with 'DT ratchet' internals.

not to say that they are going to be rubbish, but more a potential source of spares!

Just be warned Sport & Leisure will do nothing if the back wheel splinters on a small rock.

I decided to go with a pair of Hunt Wide XC wheels, which were in the sale. I got them for less than £400 and even got myself a pair of new tyres cheap too.

Has anyone found out what freehub these have? I'm trying to find an HG one so I can use these on my Shimano 11 speed bike, have sent Ghost an email (this morning) but inpatient.

Update, fyi this morning I futzed around with a DT 370 LN ratchet HG freehub from my spare E1900 wheelset and it seems to work with the ghost freehub (XD freehub), I had to add a spacer between the 2 ratchet rings and the freehub or else the freehub would lock up, but it seems to work in the stand at least...

Bump for the latest price reduction on these. Currently £325/pair although only Microspline, if that's an issue: https://sportandleisure.com/collections/wheels-wheelsets/products/ghost-c26-29-carbon-mtb-wheelset

How are folks getting on with these? Did anyone weigh theirs before fitting and can provide a comparison to the claimed sub-1500g weight?

Not for me and my 90kg weight, but for (much) lighter riders in the a11y family.

Not got round to weighing mine yet but picked some up in Black Friday at 300. Terrible packaging but wheels mostly unscathed.

Currently 292.50 with code BCR10

Blimey that's cheap!

I know nothing about carbon wheelsets, but Merlin have some Cannondale ones on DT Swiss hubs at with a big discount; possibly worth a look?

Sorry, just noted the following on those Cannondales - Rear Axle: DT Swiss, 12x148mm (AI Offset Cannondale fitment) - I guess that that might be a problem.

The Cannondale AI fitment appears to be a 6mm dish so can probably be sorted by a wheel builder assuming that's not too much to "remove" on the stock spoke lengths/nipples etc

Thanks for the code @cp - got some ordered now. That extra 10% was enough to tip me over! I'll try and remember to weigh them before fitting tyres etc.

I asked sports & leisure about warranty on these as was quite interested....

"Hello xxxxxxx, we offer a 90-day limited warranty on these wheels, however as they are clearance stock we cannot offer a manufacturer warranty on them"

It's a great price for a carbon set of wheels, but the tiny warranty and lack of parts availability has put me right off.

I added weights info to the PSAs thread when I bought mine just over a year ago, still going strong:

https://singletrackworld.com/forum/bike-forum/psas-that-may-or-may-not-be-amazing-enough-to-warrant-their-own-thread/paged/39/#post-13468566

That's for XD driver version btw

My weights: front 667g, rear 825g (microspline), pair 1,492g inc tape and valves on my kitchen scales.

The look and feel rather nice. Took me a while to realise the rim decals are indeed saying 'Ghost' (not as unclear as Scott's 'Turd' logo but not exactly clear...)

I don't think so, I'm not too offended by them so didn't think to check.

Tempted by a pair for my own use too. They'd save ~550g over my current (very nice) wheelset on my Tallboy. I know weight's not everything but that's mighty tempting. I also looked at the Reserve XC28s on Merlin but they're 3 times the price even at 50% off.

@Stevelol, did you do any further testing with your DT 370 LN ratchet freehub on the Ghost hub? I'm keen to make use of a stock of XD cassettes I have, so being able to replace the Microspline freehub would be great.

A review on the item page on Sport&Leisure has someone successfully using a 'DT Swiss Ratchet Freehub' kit to convert Microspline to HG. Whether they mean Ratchet or Ratchet LN, I don't know - apparently they very similar except freehub seal being attached to the hub shell on Ratchet vs attached to the freehub itself for Ratchet LN. You can't remember if a seal is present/visible on the Ghost hub shell?

Hey, yeah the freehubs have different sealing.

I have a DT E1900 wheelset with an XD freehub, these are with 370LN hubs, I took my HG one off the Ghost wheels and swapped the XD one on, but the cassette would lock up when stopping pedalling/back pedalling, so I messed around and added a spacer/washer behind the freehub to allow the springs to move it out of the rachet mechanism when coasting/back pedalling.

I think I also had to mess around swapping the spacers as the ratchets are not exactly the same.

I ended up buying an 18mm one of these to use as a spacer which snaps onto the axle nicely, the size has to be right as it has to slide over the axle, but not be too baggy, but had a small enough outside diameter to still fit inside the rachets so they can be pushed out of the way by the springs.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113855730687?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11400.m144671.l197929&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=9e122f37b197457299c56ebe27dd466d&bu=43096257755&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20251208064415&segname=11400

If you have both freehubs to hand and a bit of patience then you can probably get them to work. Had about 6 or 7 rides so far and no problems.

I was curious after posting the above so popped the freehub off the Ghost hub. The seal is on the hub shell rather than the freehub, suggesting Ratchet rather than Ratchet LN: https://www.dtswiss.com/en/wheels/wheels-technology/ratchet-technologies-overview

Does that sound correct?

IMG_9019.jpegIMG_9017.jpeg

I've been a Hope person to date and DT hubs are new to me, so I'll need to buy a freehub to play with it I want to experiment. Tempted.

EDIT: dammit, missed your reply @Stevelol. I'm confused now (easily done TBH) as that sounds the opposite to what you're using... 🤨

Seal on hub shell it ratchet yes. If a ratchet LN freehub was fitted you'd be double sealed so not surprised it jammed.

@a11y I might have one a HG one you can have cheaply.

Thanks @nixie, unfortunately it's a XD freehub I need - I've got a couple of part used XD cassettes to use up after swapping my e-bike to LinkGlide.

DT hub tech is all new to me so thanks for confirming what I thought about it being Ratchet.

Just like this I think? https://www.bird.bike/product/dt-swiss-xd-freehub-body-for-ratchet-wheelsets/

They are not DT Swiss hubs, the shape of the inside of the hub and the way the seal fits into the hub are both wrong.

They will be Far Eastern copies made since the DT ratchet patent expired so some DT parts may fit but many will not and DT will not be able to assist with compatibility issues as it's not one of their hubs.

If you want to be 100% sure then send the DT UK service center a shot of the rear hub's serial number and they'll be able to confirm.

No one is suggesting they are DT hubs just that the parts may fit. My response was to indicate that seal on the body is the way DT ratchet (rather than ln) hubs are made so if trying parts you'd need ratchet parts.

FWIW when I had a wheel with a prime ratchet hub I tried the DT bits on the prime hub and prime bits on a DT hub and both ratchets and freehubs seemed to work both ways.

Oh I know @hatter - that's the joys of hubs of unknown original on a heavily discounted wheelset. Nobody's had any success contacting Ghost themselves for info, hence fumbling around in the dark to see what might work. Hopefully might seal and work well enough on the Ghost-branded hub.

https://www.bird.bike/product/dt-swiss-xd-freehub-body-for-ratchet-wheelsets/

Is this me not knowing my DT Swiss stuff, or have I been sent the wrong thing?!

IMG_9036.jpeg

I was expecting it to be the ratchet thing (with the ratchet teeth on the inside) given the description, not the 3-pawl version. Am I mistaken?

Yes thats wrong. Part number on the bag is for a Shimano Microspline 3 pawl.

Is it a 3 pawl XD you received?

Give Bird a bell and they will fix that, usually pretty good sorting issues.

Thanks @rockthreegozy, it was indeed a 3 pawl XD I received (not the clearest in the picture). At the price I guess it was too good to be true! I'll give them a call in the morning.

I imagine it's just been a packing issue rather than too good to be true. The compatible wheels they list are all ratchet style so the 3 pawl is a mis-ship, they will sort you out if they can!

I bought a set of 35mm elite carbon wheels on Aliexpress. The rear hub quickly stripped out the ring in the hub the ratchet mounts to. I already expected the rear hub not to last long, I've had cheapies before.

They sent me a replacement hub.....no chance I was using it.

I replaced the hub with a genuine DT 350.

Overall still good value and they are still going strong being hammered in the Lakes almost a year on.

These Ghost do look like similar hubs, just budget to replace the hub at some time.

That's my backup plan. I'm generally a wheel whore and don't deviate away from Hope, but I'll not change the Ghost hub unnecessarily.

Had a nice chat earlier with Ben P (refund immediately, no issues), lovely chap. Wasn't any need for him to offer advice but he reckons the sealing is likely to be sub-standard using a genuine DT freehub on a 'DT style' non-genuine hub shell. Just depends how closely the Ghost hub has copied the DT design for seals I guess.
