[Closed] Getting ripped off on STW - a shame and what would you do?

Just venting frustration here really. Have been on STW for a good while and have a bought and sold a few bits and pieces, always in good faith and have found transactions very agreeable.

Recently bought from a regular STW'er. Good and lots of email comms pre and during purchase and I even referenced the fact that it's nice buying on STW as we have trust in each other. Item arrived, doesn't work. No response to any of my subsequent contacts.

Money loss to one side, feel more fed up that there's a guy who really doesn't seem to mind ripping off someone else.

I'm trying not to get irate about it but also concerned that someone else will get ripped off.

What would you do?

I'd give them a bit of time to respond then raise a dispute through PayPal. You say a regular, is it a regular forum user or classifieds only?

1. Work out which sale you're referring to in the classifieds
2. Jump to conclusions.

Seems to be pretty much standard for STW ๐Ÿ˜‰

More seriously, I'd name and shame if I was reasonably certain that the seller really was avoiding me (not just on holiday, in hospital, etc) and that my issue was definitely reasonable.

Aus contacted us with a real name, [s]said he couldn't remember the username[/s] and the given name didn't match up with anything I could find. I don't think we actually replied though, did we? That was an oversight if not, probably hit a dead end at "nowt we can do" and got lost, sorry about that. [EDIT - sorry, he didn't provide a username, I was misremembering.]

Consider though; the seller responded to a Wanted ad, so it's entirely possible that the seller isn't even a forum member. It'd be trivial to go "hi, I'm [someone else's username at random]" via email, and difficult for the buyer to validate.

Aus, if you want to give me the email address you've been corresponding with, I can look it up in the metabase to see if there's anything like it. (Hit 'Report-Post' on this post and enter it there if you like.)

Sounds rather more like a scam now... In the past, I've asked people who've replied to a wtd ad to post on the thread to at least show that they are who they say they are.

How, out of interest? Genuine curiosity like. May kill one or two of those kittens before phone box based suffocation gets them.

Someone posts wtd ad, I'm a scammer, I reply to the wanted ad via email claiming to be someone who posts lots and looks like they have a decent reputation - let's say 'njee20', buyer trusts me as a result and pays via PPG. Job done...

But why bother sending them anything?

Unusual for an internet scammer trawling forums for people to con to actually send something though? I thought they'd just take the case and run.

Personally have bought and sold from Aus, and he was great to deal with. Hope it gets sorted.

Sorry, force of habit. The Metabase is what Microsoft calls the database behind its web server. Let's pretend I said "database" instead so that I don't sound like a pretentious tossbag. (And an inaccurate one at that.)

njee20? This is how rumour start. Mind I always knew there was something not right about njee20.

Sorry, I got the how the scam works (and it's devilishly simple in its fiendishness), although that njee20 character sounds as dodgy as anything, I meant how do you get someone to prove they are who they say they are?

'njee20'

Burn him!

At least a wtd ad scammer isn't going to pretend to have my username.

I once got accused of ripping someone off after a sale on here. Turns out he hadn't bothered to charge it up before trying to use it. Reverse pitchfork needed.
