I have fitted an Air Source Heat Pump in my home and thus no longer require a connection to the gas network.
Looking into how I have the supply disconnected in throwing up much higher costs than I was expecting.

Does anyone know for sure what is required to disconnect a gas supply?
Blank off pipe on supply side of meter and remove meter?
Dig down to the main pipe and disconnect pipe to my home?

I am in Scotland if that makes any difference.

Mine was capped internally, meter removed and the supply turned off outside the house. I'm not in Scotland but would assume it's a similar process.

Why disconnect the meter? Just close your account with current supplier?

Just get the meter disconnected and leave the supply to the house. If you sell it being connected to services will be a plus point.

Joined 2 houses together last year, and removed services from one of them. Gas was reasonable - I stripped back to the meter, and Northern Gas Networks charged about £450 to remove the meter, and dig the pipe out of the ground and capped it off outside.

Electric different matter, Northern Powergrid charged £700 to do a 10 minute job, got £100 when I complained, but literally, an above ground supply so, pulled the fuse, took 2 crimps off, rejoined the cables to my neighbours house, fitted some heat shrink sleeve and placed a waterproof plastic cover over the top!

I would leave it connected , if you sell the house along the line , no gas supply will be a negative

We did joined two houses and had a redundant supply. Asked the supplier (Ovo) to remove the meter-was about £90 IIRC. That’s all they did, so the capped pipe was still on external wall. We asked if we needed to do anything else and were told no, just leave it. A year later we had a call from the national grid saying that they wanted to check the supply. They came and surveyed the site, said we shouldn’t leave it like that. A couple of weeks later they arranged for the pipe to be disconnected and capped underground at the boundary and removed the stub of the pipe that originally went to the meter but left the 15m of pipe that went from the boundary to the house where it was as it was deemed safe. Didn’t cost us anything for the boundary disconnection.

This. A lot of people like cooking with gas.
