Anyone know much about it? (use it a lot?)

One laptop, needs to have full disc encryption, as part of a external worker policy. No recommendation, other than guidance that product from Symantec, Kaspersky or Sophos would fulfil their requirements.

Kaspersky no longer seemingly even sell one
Symantec want £111
Sophos are being very cagey about pricing (I'll ring em tomorrow)

everywhere I've worked supply the encryption software so it's uniform across the business, are you self employed/contractor? Most imporatnt thing IMO isn't the cost, it's the support, if things go wrong with FDE it isn't pretty. Make sure you have a regular back up & a way of unencrypting it.

This.

Make sure you have a regular back up & a way of unencrypting it.

And, this. But then, you should be making regular backups anyway, right?

Would Bitlocker (included with Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate) not suffice?

It's for the g/f, an external contractor to the company, and this is a expectation of working for them.
How they could/would ever check, isn't an issue, as the g/f want to do it 'properly'. Properly doesn't mean she want to shell out a load of cash, if she doesn't need to (new startup).

TrueCrypt, DiskCryptor & Free CompuSec have all come up in a quick search for more info, but as I've happily avoided it for years, I'm looking for any guidance.

What kind of work needs to be done on the laptop?

If it's work that could be done completely within MS Office, then get Linux with Libre office on the laptop and you have your encryption for free! 🙂

Yes Linux would do the job, but she's no geek & has no love of computers, trying to convince her to re-learn (no matter how easy it might be) to use her laptop is not going to happen.

Her requirement when we bought the laptop ..
<her> it must be purple...
<me> ...but this is cheaper and better..
<her> is it purple?

Depends what they want really. She could create a Truecrypt file setup and ensure all that work goes in there. It is a good idea and I have had to do this for a long time - most useful products have been Safeguard Easy and the V
CheckPoint one. Worth the investment over having your lappie nicked and then getting sacked for it...as always make sure you create a recovery boot CD As part of the install process.

I'm assuming she has a Windows laptop? BitLocker is the best option as it is properly supported by Microsoft.

I use a Mac so it comes as standard but that option isn't available to everyone..

We use Becypt and its a nightmare with a dongle and just about manageable without a dongle.

If I had a choice I would choose Trucrypt.

Ubntuntu only encrypts its home folder which usually isn't enough for a security policy.

Truecrypt. Part of the installation process is the creation of an unlock disk just in case you forget your encryption passphrase. As long as you keep this somewhere safe (make two copies) you should be ok should something go wrong. The reason the company wants FDE is in case your gf's laptop gets stolen with their data on it. If it is a requirement of the contract, make sure you conform, as any data breach will probably be liable to a big payout (get liability insurance)
