Man, I'd forgotten how rad Fu Manchu are, especially on headphones while doing drawings.

Bit of Fu Manchu, then a bit of Kyuss obvs...

Give us your stoner rock classics!

How stoner? Try these recent ones - none are as booze/spliff/RAWK as Kyuss tho!

Elder - Lore
Monolord - No Comfort
Yob - Our Raw Heart

Oh man, specialist subject time.

These should keep you going for a bit.

Clutch - Anything really.
Bask - Ramble Beyond, the new one III, is realy good too.
Your Highness - Blue Devils EP or the Quietus EP, very heavy though
Scissorfight - Jaggernaut
Baroness - Red and Blue Albums, named my kid after one of their tracks
Menhir - Uberlith EP
The Sword - Either their first two albums for 'metal' or High Country for 'groovy'
Sandrider - Godhead
Torche - Meanderthal
Gnome - Father of Time
Realm - Red Clay Dead River

The Obelisk Blog or the youtube channel 'Stoned Meadow of Doom' are both great resources if you want an unending torrent of this stuff from the dank depths of the underground.

here, you stoner experts - can you recommend me some more stuff that is

a) super slow
b) maybe a bit droney
c) not about bongs
d) not exactly rock n roll

Ideally I want a cross between Low and Neurosis. Yob do it sometimes, Sunn))o are usually just a bit too droney for me. There are a few Amenra and Ulver bits I like too

thanks!

Not usually into the mega slow drony stuff myself but

Earth - Pentastar: In The Style Of Demons or The Bees Made Honey in The Lions Skull

Sleep are probably the masters of this but they are VERY MUCH all about bongs.

You might think me off the mark on genre but what you just asked for was recorded as a multi-album composition by Wolfgang Voigt under the name ‘Gas’.

Imagine a slow subsonic Wagnerian metal-techno orchestra pulsing, horning and thrumming deeply from every single tree in The Ur-forest. That.

Also check out Boris esp ‘Flood’ LP and a few other slowies of theirs. Droneevil, actually. Love Boris.

Lastly - precious and rare drone gems to be found from ex -O.L.D. guitarist/producer James Plotkin

Kamchatka have a new album out "Hoodoo Lightning" that I am enjoying the shit out of right now. From memory, the keyboard player came from Spiritual Beggars, another fine, fine stoner rock band.

In fact, most of Kamchatka's stuff is good and I recommend a browse of their back catalogue.

Give Bossk a go. Stoner riffs mixed with Meddle-era Pink Floyd:

I'm also in love with the newest Cult of Luna album, although it's a wee bit more metal than others have listed:

Saw Fu Manchu when they were touring the In Search Of album. Honestly thought I’d permanently damaged my hearing after that gig. It was brilliant though.

Pretty much everything that’s been mentioned plus the below.

Monster Magnet (pre Power Trip)
Hermano
Truck Fighters,
Sleep,
Fatso Jetson,
Brant Bjork,
Vultures,
Yawning Man,
Unida,
The Conpany Band,
The Heavy Eyes,
Vista Chino
Master of Reality

All desert rock or stoner related. I wouldn’t really class Clutch as stoner they’re simply just the best rock band ever.

Win thread, i've seen Fu Manchu and also Nebula, spin off band. They had a massive gong behind the drums they set fire to at the end of the gig, health & safety be dammed! I am going to go nuts so...excuse me.

The Dutch do a lot of good stoner rock..i wonder why.

Santa Cruz ‎– What Is Love? (Crystal Meth Boogie)

"A 16 minute insane and epic black acid fuzz drug rock metal track by Santa Cruz from the westcoast of Holland, old ZZ Top meets Danzig meets Goatsnake."

"Very sinister, very insane, very dramatic and very heavy psychedelic/psychotic doom/drone/boogie/boner rock song of 16 minutes, Orange Sunshine's black ritual acid rock drug metal project!"

OP You’re probably already subscribed to Stoned Meadow of Doom YT channel?

If not then go there and do so. It’s an Aladdin’s Cave of (More recent) stoner/psych/doom etc.

Stoner is a fairly massive genre, but for the desert end of the spectrum per Fu Manchu/Kyuss you can't really go wrong with the (many!) other bands featuring ex-Kyuss dudes. Pretty much everything Garcia has done since then is worth a listen. Personal fave:

You may also want to check out Dozer:

...and perhaps a bit of Wo Fat:
https://youtu.be/YQxvEz21R1U

As already mentioned, youtube is an absolute goldmine for finding more recent stoner material. Once the algorithm works out that you want some tasty stoner jams, it does a fine job of serving up some fuzz.

What a smashing thread! I'll be supplementing my night shifts with some of the stuff here.
My two pennorth are;
The first two Om albums, drum and bass grrrrooooove!
Anything by Goatsnake and I cant believe nobody's mentioned Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium? More doom-y than their later nonsense, but an absolute classic.

This thread just reminded me I saw Orange Goblin supporting Scissorfight in Leeds. What a belter of a gig.

For Orange Goblin check out Time Travelling Blues or Coup de Grace.

High on Fire are worth a mention. Matt Pike from Sleep goes full Motorhead. Blessed Black Wings is a savage album.

Gonna have great fun playing some of this later. Only glaring omission I can think of so far has been Earthless. Ft my all time favourite drummer Mario Rubalcaba, ex Pro skater and drummer for RFTC, Hot Snakes, OFF! ...

Some banging suggestions folks, thanks!

It's going to take me a while to work through it!

I've tried to like Clutch, but something about it just isn't my thing 🤔 Too sort of polished 'Mercan MTV/Planet rock sorta sounding maybe.

I love the ultra heavy sound of that Acid King track above. Nice and raw and fuzzy👌

ooh yes thanks for the tip - GAS has been distantly on my radar to check out but i've never got around to it. I do love a bit of dub techno too so I reckon i'll get well into it 🙂

thanks for the other ideas too, looking forward to giving them a proper spin this week!

Fu Manchu are indeed rad. I love "The Action is Go" but also "Godzilla's / Eatin' Dust" which I believe was produced by Josh Homme:

Keeping the fuzz dialed up, Mars Red Sky are worth checking out:

And so are Rama, for this EP at least (their later stuff got a bit turgid for my liking):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=034TIGOU0QA

Going a bit lighter, Causa Sui are great (note the first track on this record is called "Homage", which should give you a hint as to why it sounds as it does. Listen on for more good things):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWMwcSXxALY

...and further on the psych trip, I enjoyed this a lot recently from SMOD's YT channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWM8sp2B_uc

here, you stoner experts – can you recommend me some more stuff that is

a) super slow
b) maybe a bit droney
c) not about bongs
d) not exactly rock n roll

Have you tried Bongripper? I mean, OK, the word "Bong" is in the title, but there are no lyrics so I think the bong association there is just a coincidence. Anyway it's fairly slow and droney.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsDz5qphC3c

Or perhaps even Conan? Veeerrrryyyyy slow, no bongs, shouted lyrics about, um, I've no idea. It sounds badass though.

came to recommend yawning man or the wizard. Both up there ^

Saw Yawning man this summer - Epic.

Also saw Redwood who were brilliant youngsters in a similar vein, but there recorded stuff is not as good as they were live....

Posting for the linx really...

This is my favourite genre so I’ll share more when my brain has started working properly 🙂 page 1 of this thread keeps crashing my phone (too many videos?) but I assume all the usual suspects (Clutch, Down, Sleep etc) have been mentioned so I’ll try and find some less obvious choices 🙂

All Them Witches

Baron Crane (instrumental weirdness with stonery riffs)

Brother O Brother

https://youtu.be/rbek9EGhBGU

More incoming later I’m sure !

Supersoul

Deaf Radio

May as well do a little plug for my band too! We’re instrumental heavy post-rock stuff with lots of stoner influence. I joined the band just after this was recorded, newer stuff has more big riffs and heaviness 🙂 hopefully get back in the studio for a couple tracks again soon

*EDIT - no idea how to embed!*

If you like classic pre-stoner rock try Leaf Hound...

which is a nice transition into something slightly more modern from Unida who have already been mentioned in the thread (only that they did a decent cover of Stray by Leaf Hound!)

Gonga's a new one on me. I'm glad to see someone posted All Them Witches too, I was in two minds about including them 🙂

And 3 by 4 are good too, eh?

One more -- a band named after an album by another band! And they say this genre is self-referential.

Not technically stoner, but Five Horse Johnson are worth a spin. The singer/harp player provided the amazing harp playing on Clutch’s Electric Worry.

Have Atomic Bitchwax been mentioned yet? Tweak Bird are also not a Stoner band, but have a definite stoner vibe. Che are brilliant too, another one of Brant Bjork’s side projects. The guy is a legend. The desert Dave Grohl.
