Don't even know whether defect reporting is wanted, but something is still borked on the timestamps.

The extra letters / autocorrect happen for me on iPhone running the latest iOS / safari. I’ve noticed it happens more often two lines down from using the quote / clear format buttons.

Cheers I can’t seem to simulate that.

Ha! Quote broke.

It is, thank you.

1) Using TLS would add additional load to the server; not much in and of itself, but processing every single transaction over https would be probably be quite significant. It would be madness to do this unless there was a good reason to do so. Which leads to,

2) There’s little reason to do so. Are you seriously concerned about a man-in-the-middle attack when posting a “what tyres” question? It’s a web forum. Transactions that should require a secure connection – such as passing credentials around when logging in – do use https.

SSL termination on network devices is relatively trivial and if I ran websites I'd be engineering things the best way possible rather than looking at things like it was still 2005. As Sandwich said, the SEO benefit is quite possibly worth the small extra cost (the company I used to work for in the UK happily threw this in for free if you asked nicely).

As an aside, you're not winning people over getting defensive. Yes it is just a web forum, but likely to be a quiet one if mods and staff get all shirty.

If they didn’t care about the user experience then why are they spending lots of time, effort and money redoing the site to make it better?

They are? They've done a good job of hiding it then.

I suspect you need to work out the definition of "better" here. Hint: it's similar to the question of who the customer is if you're getting it for free, and also related to why they don't just embed https://cse.google.com/cse/publicurl?cx=002353871167780190211:ffna6g0opko in their page (see I did a custom one now - it even comes with code which means you wouldn't have to leave the comfort of the STW site - and it's a hint for those using the extension).

I'm not being defensive, I'm trying to offer my best guess at an explanation.

Yes it is just a web forum, but likely to be a quiet one if mods and staff get all shirty.

My point was, it's "just" a forum in terms of security requirements, as opposed to say an Internet banking site.  STW has never been served over https as long as I've been a member, now someone mentions it in passing fourteen hundred posts into an update feedback thread and suddenly it's an issue and we're being shirty in replying?  Do me a quaver.

SSL is really important TBH not just for security but for DPR compliance and the fact that search engines will cease to rank http sites. With GDPR on the horizon STW would be on a sticky wicket were they to suffer a data breach down to a cookie stolen over http. It really should be sorted and I'm sure they know that. Services such as Cloudfront make it a cinch.

Cougar - no one has accused you of getting shirty.

That one was firmly levelled at another Mod.

INRAT

So: How do I get to a thread I've contributed to via the list of posts I've made in my posting history?

If I start a thread I can get back to it if I post in one there's no link from history to the thread.

What hammy said. I appreciate having taken the metaphorical (or literal for staff) STW shilling that people feel obliged to be supportive but a forum is a community "made" by the users for the most part and all people want is to have some feedback and some fixes to the most urgent problems rather than creating a fix for a search that has been mostly crap for years.

And it has.  Click the # link under the post in the "Replies created" list.

Re: https, this is on the cards but there are some technical issues with non-https content to address first which is why it's not currently implemented site-wide.

Just popped by to mention that.

Not sure if it had been there for ages and I'd just not noticed.

It's good, prefer having the text of the reply visible, would be nice to have the thread title in there as well.

Lots of other issues still with mobile and W10/Chrome, I'm sure they've been addressed above.

I've found a new feature what I likes - when you post a link you can make it open in a new tab. That's good, everyone should use that. Upgrade was worth it.

I take it this is known and  being addressed but it seems to effect some folk more than others but all the funny <div> , <span> . things that appear when you copy and paste and even hitting remove formatting does not remove makes many posts unreadable.

I've added this to the list.  Anyone else seeing similar?

@mr, are you running the latest iOS?  That's been reported as fixing some other iDiosyncrasies previously.

Oh, I see. You said you'd close that thread because the info is here in this thread… is it?

Can we not just have a sticky thread that tells us these things as they get sorted? Make it so that only staff and moderators can post in it, so it just has the useful information… not loads of us confusingly asking the same questions, in different ways… so that people can be pointed to that sticky semi-closed thread for definitive and current help in using this evolving forum?

Pointing people to this thread isn't that helpful.

I think this was supposed to be it originally. Drac mentioned he [i]might[/i] set up a new one...

Why does the site keep trying to use html codes when it should be BBcodes. Bloody freaky

It sure is a mangled mess under the bonnet eh?

i have yet to see any change to this forum which has made it easier to use, read, be part of etc etc, apart from PM’s being introduced.

I mean seriously, you can’t even quote someone without it looking like you’ve short circuited your keyboard.

Copied text, put in reply box, highlighted it and pressed quote. Not my fault if the site code is messed up. I could start a free off the shelf forum which would do that no problem.

Yup like I said some can some can’t. For me it works 90% of the time then it’ll just decide it won’t bother. I’m sure I could too but it would just be a forum serving very few, no integration with a website, subscription service and no previous database to work with.

You’re in the can’t camp.

If it helps at all we (mods) have raised the concerns around the BB Code as priority fix.
