Into the ether. Images will either post as a web address or with the imgur frame around them. Except for the NO.

No idea what happened there.

Sigh ... some trial and error and it seems you can get it to work. It’s like some kind of masonic handshake

I can post an image from Imgur on iPad by using the insert image buttons in the reply box.

I cant get it to work on iPhone with it being just a link or it having an Imgur frame around it.

And that involves going to a different site. Yes, they could put a google search box on this site but why be the same as everyone else?

Which makes exactly what difference to you? If they put a search box on here (I'm going to do that in the extension now, just to make a point) then the user experience would be exactly the same* as if they had their own custom search facility. Yeah, why use the industry standard when you could spend lots of time trying to reinvent the wheel rather than fixing all the other problems?

The forum as it is currently is perfectly usable. People can post, reply, quote, insert links / photos / videos, , edit posts blah blah blah. If I hadn’t been on this site forever I’d find the level of moaning and abuse directed at Mark et al astonishing but as it is it’s just expected.

Like many others I have no buttons above the reply box apart from "Preview" (which doesn't work). I've no idea what the "Reply" button does as it doesn't work. The only way I have of quoting, adding any formatting, posting photos etc. is either by adding the tags manually or by using the forum extension. I have no way of adding smileys apart from those I remember the code for. As mentioned above, the functionality I mostly used to interact with the old site doesn't work (I've bodged it in the extension, but it's a rubbish bodge). Fortunately I don't have the problem lots of other people do of pasting lots of HTML into my replies, because that bit doesn't work at all. All of these are things the devs could be working on, but instead Mark has them reinventing ****ing Google.

simondbarnes wrote:

Oh and another thing. You all moan about the lack of updates and when you get one you moan even more!

Yes - because the update we do get suggests Mark's paying no attention at all to the issues people have and what they'd like fixing. As I mentioned before, only a couple of comments on here about the search and they've got helpful replies with the Google link. Unfortunately there isn't a Google link to make all the other bits of the site work - so Mark's update is that they're busy working on the only bit of missing functionality on the new forum for which there is an easy workaround - we're supposed to be happy with that?

*the same apart from the search results being far better than any custom search function

The forum is worse, much much worse since the “update”. That is the bottom line here.

Anybody noticed when singletrack posts turn up in Google Searches the dates of the threads are shown wrong in the Google results? I had one that said 4 days ago, go to the singletrack page and it was 2 Years old!

I guess this means it not quite right still?
Will check back in a few days to see if it's working again, or could we just have an email to let us know when it functions for non-IT people?
Only buttons I see are preview and submit, the profile menu about the forum and recent posts is pretty much a copy of the forum front page.

Just for my own reference to find this post again and any replies, page 35 at time of posting.

I wonder if the quoting is working properly yet. Preview seems ok.....

EDIT: Ok, that would be no then.

EDIT2: Hard to argue with Jamba's point really. The fact that the "preview" shows one thing, and the final post something else, is just a sad joke.

After pressing submit, it takes a long time for all the cogs to slip into place and for  the page to refreshe to show my contribution, nugget of wisdom or witty quip.

In fact, generally I'm finding the site to be slower, these things are noticeable with 1.3Mbps download speed and 0.5 up. Other sites however do not appear to be as slow.

iPad, Safari, 10.3.3

Edit is working now. Daren't try the quote thing again just yet, it scares me...

I think just about manageable or just about usable is a much more accurate description.

I've not read this entire thread as it's full of whining old men/ladies but I'm curious about what forum engine is being used. Anyone know? (I could probably find out if i could be bothered to do a view source but I'm being lazy).

The quoting thing is strange, never seen that before outside of MS Word. Much as I sympathise with the STW developers moving towards MS Word peculiarities is not a good direction 🙂

https://bbpress.org/ - Mark mentioned that somewhere early on in the thread, though there are lots of class names in the HTML starting 'bbp-' - the main site also appears to be built using Wordpress

This I'm afraid. I do have to laugh at all the 'stop moaning' comments. For a start, most of it isn't moaning, it's feedback, if the tech guys can't handle that then they're in the wrong job. Secondly, why put up with a drop in quality of service other than the obvious answer that most of us are British and it's part of our national character?

When is the forum RSS feed resurrecting?

And to re-iterate points above, I rarely use search here but RSS, my forum activity and favourites were all things I used to interact here.

Another issue (which may or may not have been tracked already - don't know, and am certainly not trawling page by page through this behemoth thread)

Forum history (within my profile) - doesn't work for checking on threads I've replied to - I can see chronological list of all my replies to threads, but can't seem to find a way of jumping to that thread from there, nor can I do anything sensible from that point.  On then seeing if it is working for threads I've started (not that many - not a 'big hitter' I guess), I can see all the replies, but not my original post. (Windows 10, Chrome)

Suggestion:  take the forum offline except to testers until this place is fixed.  I've certainly found I'm drifting on here a LOT less since the 'update', as I can't be bothered to read threads where almost all of the posts are laced with daft html crap.  Sorry, but it's just rubbish.

Yep, terrible here too - only the preview button (which doesn't work) visible. I'd normally browse here every day, but not since the forum 'updates' - threads are almost unreadable with all the coding visible.

Search is not really an issue as it never worked anyway! The quoting thing is an annoyance. But the inability to find threads you’ve posted in is a major usability issue, that needs fixing first IMO.

+1 and fixing it will lead to a quick uptick in traffic I'm sure

Most importantly though, the killfile's stopped working and I'm seeing comments from Jambalaya

🙁

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3Asingletrackworld.com+forum works fine (always has worked better than the official search)

I'm afraid you'll have to switch to Chrome as I've fixed the extension for that (though it's still an unofficial release, see d/l link and instructions at http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/forum-update/page/29/ )

Just to reiterate the search point, I don't have that bookmarked, but it was the first hit for https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3Asingletrackworld.com+forum+aracer+chrome+extension

Bit of a bellend post there Drac.

No-one is forcing you to be a sycophant.

Customer service and all that. The argument that the forum is a freebie is a bit of a stretch though, as we know it's a "product" and some of us pay directly rather than just as eyeballs for advertisers.

It's clear the forum is a retrograde step. As I said before, I won't be renewing my P until it's a bit more functional as I visit far less now than before.

Also, is there a reason that HTTPS isn't in use? Just for interest's sake

Oh, just reasons. This too will be fixed once they’ve finished reinventing google, but not at the weekend.

I think they don't consider it necessary - which on the surface seems a reasonable argument, but is somewhat flawed when you look in more detail. Because if I fire up Fiddler and look at the transaction going in clear over the internet when I make this post I can see a wordpress_logged_in_XXXXX token going in clear over the internet which could be intercepted and enable posting on here.

Though as soon as you go to any user profile stuff eg https://singletrackworld.com/members/aracer/ and downwards they do use HTTPS, so clearly they can and that kind of blows away any argument for not doing so on the whole forum.

It would help their SEO if https was used as well.

Edit, quoting was relatively painless that time

This is not an official statement, just my opinion:

1) Using TLS would add additional load to the server; not much in and of itself, but processing every single transaction over https would be probably be quite significant.  It would be madness to do this unless there was a good reason to do so.  Which leads to,

2) There's little reason to do so.  Are you seriously concerned about a man-in-the-middle attack when posting a "what tyres" question?  It's a web forum.  Transactions that should require a secure connection - such as passing credentials around when logging in - do use https.

If they didn't care about the user experience then why are they spending lots of time, effort and money redoing the site to make it better?

Drac.

The extra letters / autocorrect happen for me on iPhone running the latest iOS / safari. I’ve noticed it happens more often two lines down from using the quote / clear format buttons.
