Superb result and performance from England, best I've seen us play for a long time. Just hope that the press stay off the players' backs and don't start claiming that we'll win the World Cup, I think we're a little way off that just yet.

Oh, and hup Holland *s*****

Yet again biased journalists refer to the losers as Scottish not British. 👿

Well done England, bad luck Scotland, Watched the game in the pub, had the usuall bores coming in saying why wasn't the Welsh game on ( I'm Welsh and live in cardiff ) But I'll support any Home nation team. Still hoping Wales will qualify for something at least once in my lifetime (not going to hold my breath though. !!)

I'm sure that we'll see the Scots support any other team in the World Cup apart from England. So typical of them, 🙄

Trailmonkey,

Lay your cards on the table here. Are you trolling or are you a genuine bawbag?

I suspect the latter, but this being STW I'm prepared to be surprised and find out that you're actually a great guy and you'll take it all on the chin when Engerlund get horsed out of the WC in the QFs. Not that you'll believe me as a Scotchman, but I do wish England all the best and I will cheer them on despite the teeth-grindingly awful jingoism that will supparate from the media next summer.

If FC makes Stevie G. captain they might make the semis...

Oh, sorry Toddboy.

Hope I didn't spoil your stereotyping there. You just crack on with that if it makes you feel good.

I believe you stuartie. You will be massively in the minority though. The majority of of Scotch people hate the English. Quite a lot of them seem to use there hatred of the English as a way of defining there national identity.

The majority of of Scotch people hate the English

I don't agree with you on that point pomona. Sure, there are a significant number who do, but they are ignorant arseholes, which the majority of Scots, or English, or Brits probably aren't.

It would be like me asserting that the majority of English people hate the Scots. This is a fallacy, of course. Only small-minded bigots find solace in this attitude.

However, this is a trolling thread so we'll not get any constructive dialogue out of it, I imagine.

Hmmm, no TJ yet. Unusual for him considering everyone's favourite plastic jock somehow manages to have an opinion on any thread that has even the smallest mention of Scotland in it.

How is it possibly a trolling thread ? If you could lay aside your prejudice for an instant, you could see that it's merely a thread stating that England played well but we shouldn't get carried away about winning the world cup.
At the same time, I'm amused that our rivals have been eliminated, the same feelings that you are hoping to experience when

Engerlund get horsed out of the WC in the QFs
but I forgot, it's perfectly acceptable for the Scots to wish ill fortune on the English as long as it's not reciprocated.
So far, there only appears to be one bawbag on the thread and it's not me.

I think there seems to be an obsession on here amongst certain english posters as regards The Master Race. Feeling a bit insecure lads? 🙂 I've still to read any anti-english stuff from Scottish posters on here - it's always the other way round sadly.

I actually quite enjoy watching England in the WC and Euro's in Scotland's (continual) absence, as they have a few decent players. I think they will get to the Quarter Finals again, which is a good achievement and is a realistic reflection of their place in world football (ie - one of the top 10 sides in the world). The main pity is that their media will once again completely over-hype their chances of winning the thing so that it can be spun as a national disaster when they lose in said QF's. I think it would be helpful for Englanders to understand that what is wrongly perceived as anti-english sentiment during the World Cup is in reality anti-english media sentiment (and a bit of jealously I guess) - an understandable reaction to the ridiculous hyperbole and saturation coverage that we're forced to endure. It's actually worth seeing England lose just to see Ian Wright and Alan Shearer in the huff 😆

Hopefully trailmonkey, who was gleefully enjoying Andy Murray's defeat yesterday and Scotland's defeat against Holland today can at least see the irony in his own point of view when critising others for doing the same thing....

I tend to think that a greater percentage of Scots want the English football team to fail than vice versa - I could be wrong, it is just how I perceive it. I really wish it wasn't the case and I really don't understand football hatred like this. Just like in the domestic game with all the 'I support X so I hate Y' that goes on.

Leeds fan and not a Man U hater as well as an England fan, disappointed that we will be the only home nation in the finals.

Scots hate the english huh? I think that should actually Scots Football fans hate the english. I am half english/scottish, brought up in england but now live in Scotland, I have had no feelings of hatred towards me, ever.

You get the usual bit of banter/jokes around football, and thats why I am not a football fan. The majority of english hating Scotland fans are likely to have a lower than average IQ anyway.

If you hate someone because of where they are from, without actually knowing them, then you arent worth knowing yourself.

It's all merely a reaction to years of observing anti English feeling from north of the border.
You see the thing is, it's comments like this :-

I think there seems to be an obsession on here amongst certain english posters as regards The Master Race.

That prove the point.

following it with this :-

I've still to read any anti-english stuff from Scottish posters on here

Should ask you to question the irony in your own post.

I am aware of the rather dull and circular nature of the argument here so I'll lay my point of view to rest. Pity that the intended topic of the thread wasn't allowed to be discussed.

Trailmonkey - usually the use of a smiley is to donate a joke or a flippant comment 🙄 In any case, I hardly think "the master race" (an intentionally absurd comment) is anti-english in any way, unless you can enlighten me?

I did discuss your intended topic and predicted England would get to the QF's after saying that I enjoyed watching them - did you actually read my post instead of rushing to be offended?

But that is only because you have nothing to wind us up about - we are winners whilst you lot are losers.

Or more accurately - "we lose at a later stage than you" 😉

That I cannot argue with. At least your lot don't build up false hopes and expectations. I actually enjoyed* the Euro Finals last summer because I didn't have the stress of seeing us bomb out in the quarters/semis.

*But I still wouldn't change the fact we are in Sarf Afreka next June 11...

Getting back on topic, if the QF's was a realistic outcome for SGE's team shouldn't we be aiming to go out on pens in the semi finals this time around ?

Eh?

I think Trailmonkey's problem is that he's not very bright and struggles when an issue isn't neatly polarised into black and white.

TM - if you read back to my first post, I was wishing England well in the WC finals, or did you choose to ignore that bit because it made things all muddled up in your wee head?

You still haven't demonstrated that you're not a bawbag, but I'm prepared to be surprised...

(Now I must go back to work - children need educated to not grow up as bawbags)

Trailmonkey & Grumm:

Please grow up, its getting pathetic. This behaviour is what the UK should be trying to get rid of rather than nurture.

There are great examples of little minded Scots (not Scotch, please thats just worse than pretending not to know its not the correct term) hoping that the English lose and of little minded English hoping that the Scots lose.
However, it doesnt do anything other than prove their rather low intelligence and rather high infantile behaviour.

and i haven't added fuel to the fire since but it seems that some just won't let it lie. 🙄

I fell out with my best mate a few years ago (Hasnt been the same since). Reason for it was that ourselves and our wives were flying to greece about 10mins after the England V Scotland Euro finals match. I think it basically ended Scotlands chances of any further progression through the tournament.

I have never seen someone so bitter and twisted about a football match and he just couldnt bring himself to 'be a pal' and join in the spirit of the football whilst abroad. I ended up storming out of a meal as he and his wife refused to watch the England V Germany match and made an act of dragging the meal out. I 100% guarentee that i would have been sat by his side supporting scotland if the shoe was on the other foot. England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales. I want them all to win.

For Trailmonkey & Grumm...

Please stop posting your thoughts, however subtle or blatant, about Scots and English. You seem to have a rather warped point of view - much like any football fan i might add be it English or Scottish - and it doesnt help.

The UK needs to educate people to not think like this, not the other way round..

Not sure about trailmonkey, for me it's just a bit of banter (or trolling if you prefer :P). I love Scotland and probably feel more affinity for it than I do with for England - got family from there, will probably move there one day, yadayadyada...

I would also happily support them in the World Cup (if they ever made it). 😉

well having just seen a kid get stabbed here in Lausanne (4 days later he was dead) for looking at someone 'wrongly' i feel that this sort of banter isnt good.

Therefore maybe think as some people obviously take it worse than others. Kids these days just need one little trigger and their using knives on each other..

Yes I'm sorry - me posting a flippant comment on the internet about Andy Murray is going to get people killed. What was I thinking?

Tbh I was more taking the piss out of the fact that while several people claimed this 'British when they win, Scottish when they lose' thing about the media, no-one could come up with an example, apart from the other way round, in a Scottish newspaper.

I'm not denying it happens, I just found it amusing. But now I know about the mortal danger I am posing I will put a stop to it.

"awful jingoism from the media" you mean this?

Bok of the net! (Daily Mirror), 3 Lions in Africa (Daily Mirror), Get de beers in (The Sun), Ooh-aah Africa! (The Sun), We can win it (Daily Express), Watch out world (Daily Star), World class (Daily Mail) and Job done (The Independent) are some of the newspaper headlines after Fabio Capello's England side secured World Cup qualification on Wednesday night.

😆
