What's the highest number of penalties ever needed to settle a tie?

I think the record has just recently been broken ( within the last few weeks ) but I can't remember who the sides were.

I haven't been much help have I ?

Celtic have just won a semi-final against Dundee Utd. 11-10 on penalties (with 3 misses/saves in total)

I've a feeling that the record is a lot higher than that.

Quite an old article, but it ups the bar a bit to 44 kicks. Wikipedia reckoned the record was 54 but that was in quite an obscure African game I think.

There was a Holland v England U21 game last summer that went to penalties - a lot of them.

England lost. again.

Poor game, but an enthralling shoot-out.

Lots of superb penalties - I feel sorry for Dundeh Utd.
