I now have a very strong allergy to chickpeas which developed in my early forties. Better to say I had a strong reaction which stopped me breathing and I haven't wanted to repeat the test for confirmation.

About 6 weeks ago I had a course of penicillin, to which I have never been allergic to, unsurprisingly I didn't have any problems. Then about 2 weeks ago I was put on another course of penicillin, this time 2 hours after the first capsule, I had a very strong allergic reaction - my body quickly became covered with rashes and blisters and my tongue went partially numb. Luckily I happen to have some antihistamine at hand and took that straight away, but I will never be able to take penicillin again (my GP saw the rash and confirmed that it was an allergic reaction). Something happened over a period of 4 weeks, so yep, I reckon allergies can suddenly appear.

You are never have allergic reactions to things the first time your body encounters them - you always develop allergies - although sometimes it only takes two or three exposures. However it can take a lot, lot longer and it is possible to develop allergies in your middle years - (but I don't know how common it is). I used to eat salmon and trout without a problem, this year I started with nausea and vomiting every time I had some. I'm 56 🙁

As I approach middle age, I appear to be getting ever more asshat-intolerant.

More seriously,

Outside of food, I've never had an allergic reaction to anything.

Stuck some moisturiser on my face the other day (yes yes, I'm comfortable with my sexuality, bugger off), stuff I've used for years, and had a severe reaction where the skin around my eyes and mouth flared up like a chemical burn. I had a cold at the time so initially attributed it to that, and put twice as much moisturiser on to stop my skin from cracking. Used the same stuff a few weeks later, same reaction, aha!

Talking to my mum about it, turns out she's severely allergic to lanolin. Checked the ingredients, and sure enough, there it is. Changed brands and I've been fine since.

So, aged 39, I've suddenly become allergic to something that in all likelyhood could be a genetic hand-me-down...! How bizarre is that?
