3 weeks ago I came down with Flu 5 days of fever over 100 shivers shakes drenched in sweat, the wife called a doctor who came prnounced flu perscibed parecetemol and stay in bed.

Ok 2 weeks in bed so weak i can only just walk a straight line a bad cough and short of breath so back to the doctor who ways its normal.

The thing that really worries me is my mind is slow I stare into space a lot and I know my thinking process is slow.

Ok Iam 55 years old now and this has hit me for six is this normal with Flu at my age frankly its got me well scared.

Sounds normal for actual honest to goodness flu. Most people that say that have flu just have a bit of a cold, you sound like you've actually the real thing.

I'm in my 40's and contracted some form of flu / chest infection / lurgy back in November. I think I finally ridded myselt of it a fortnight ago.

On the upside, I think there's been some horrible flu mutations kicking about lately so it might not just be age. Halfway through it my missus called an ambulance because I'd fallen asleep in my food and was unresponsive (though I think a lot of that was the horse drugs they gave me).

It's normal for flu nothing to do with your age. It still kills the young and the old. I got it in my 20s and lost weeks of my life, I can only recall being woken to eat and drink. It then took months to get my energy back.

Next time you have someone with the sniffles who claims they have the flu it's legal to punch them in the face. Well it should be.

Worth thinking about getting a jab every year if you can.

Also, this. I think these days the term "flu" is used as a catch-all, but that sort of viral infection is not a cold. You can have flu with no cold symptoms at all.

It's about half a million a year IIRC. Granted, most were otherwise buggered to start with, but still.

Yeah people forget that actual flu, kills people.

I had it at Christmas, then either than or something nasty again in early 2016. I developed pneumonia and walked into a health centre and the nurses were shocked that I was still standing.

My brothers currently in ICU recovering from flu, which turned into triple pneumonia and nearly 4 weeks under sedation on ventilation, with 2 weeks on an ECMO.. it's bloody serious if it hits you hard.

And on a related note, once again thank goodness for the NHS. You just don't realise how lucky we are till something like this happens.

Like I had when I was 32? I thought I'd been hit by a freight train with that.

Actual flu is horrid. I was in bed for a week in Nov with a similarly addled brain. Sadly days after getting the jab! Hunker down & allow yourself plenty of time to recover. Took me another 3 weeks before I felt right.

I got the flu when I was fit and healthy in my 30's. Went back to work too soon and got Pneumonia pretty bad. Took me about a year to get back to normal health, plus long term effects from the Pneumonia.

Take your time to get over it, nasty stuff

I had the same in early March. Totally knocked me. Never experienced anything so horrible before and feel like I lost 2 weeks of my life. Couldn't think straight for awhile either.

Had a dose back in Jan which put me in bed for a week - didn't really shift for about another month. For at least 2 wks after I was about as much use as a chocolate tea pot.

I'm 45.

I was lucky with a relatively mild dose in 2011. Took me 6 months to get over it.

Not sure it didn't contribute to my longer term health issues.

Got it now, spent a week in bed, came back to work and feels like wading through treacle, coughing coughing coughing, which is killing me. The thought of doing any exercise is scary but I am going a bit stir crazy.

Did I mention the coughing

Wife and I have both had it twice this year, which I wouldn't normally believe, but it really did happen with fever and aches and coughing and stuff. Once in March, took 3 weeks to get properly over it and then we were both knocked flat two weeks ago with me peaking at a temp of 103.5 which I've not seen before. Almost up and running again now, though I went for a gentle run yesterday and came down with short-lived fever and chills again.

Don't know if it is age-related, "usually" (ie the once or twice a decade when I've actually had flu in the past) I have a fever for a day or two and get better quite quickly.

I had it mid March - 4 days and no sign of getting better - feeling mentally slow just like the OP

Eventually went to A&E and found my sats were less than 90 (should be 95-100) - I think this was the cause of the slowness I felt - the brain is very susceptible to low O2 levels

I was admitted and given 3 days of IV antibiotics for suspected pneumonia. Took a good 2-3 weeks to feel properly better after that.

Lots of us in our 20's, 30's and 40's etc have had what you have - flu is is not a bad cold, flu will knock you for 6 and leave you fatigued for another week.

Look after yourself and get well soon OP.

Chicken soup and relax.

Similar story here for all the family. Got it bad in early Feb and it's been back twice in some form or another, feel pretty weak generally. Flu jab on next year as its been a real pain.
