I'm going business to SA next February. Never been business before, what's it like*

Probably the best long haul flying experience. Essentially no jet lag, long enough to get a proper nights sleep (LHR to Jburg is 10:50 so with food at either end and a movie good chance for 8hours kip), but not too long, a bit of fun turbulence over the rift valley to make the dreams come alive 😉 and a nice variety of first world and SA wines.

Basic choice between the reliability of BA and Richard's Pink Porn Palace in the sky. I mix and match!!!! Avoid Air Bokka if you can.

J'burg passport control can be a nightmare for queuing though (on the way out). Nice showers in the lounge.

Used to when I worked the civil service, thems were the rules. Anything over 4hrs at my pay grade was compulsory business class.

So that's where all my taxes go!

4hrs? FFS, that's absurd!

Transat - Tends to be premium going West, Business on the overnight home to the UK. Other than that, anything from around 8hrs up is business. So, West Coast and APAC are Business. Any flight in Europe? Cattle, like everyone else. OK, cattle with many an upgrade, and the lounge, but for a flight under about 6hrs* you really don't need to be in the comfy end.

*In the paperclip industry, there's very little business that I do that's in the 6hr flight window. Mostly US, Europe or APAC.

Back when I had a proper job, we had an anything-outside-"Europe"-business rule. One day our GM emailed everyone saying that if we got quotes (we used to mostly arrange our own travel through a local travel agent) for business and economy for Asia/US trips and took the economy, we'd pocket half the difference as a bonus in our salary. Until the big bosses over in Crawley found out, not a single person flew business class for around eighteen months. 😆

Im oil im mostly 6hrs down to africa and middle east which i can handle no bother in cattle . I refused to travel to oz recently mostly because it was economy class for stupid hours to basically watch pipe trip( they tried to sell it to me as an excellent chance to see oz.... Sorry ive been i didnt think it was all that...... Didnt see the point in going - sent a graduate engineer to watch it. Good experiance for him - saved me getting dvt and a ****ed up sleep pattern as well as bored out my nut. 🙂

Last week was good actually. Travel suggested i take the cheap flights to kuwait - save money. 27hrs each way with a layover in dubai.

Once you factor in my costs , hotel , transfers and expensesfor the extra 2 days travel.... The flights were actually double the 6hr direct flight.......i gotthe 6hr flight.

I hate flying, not through fear, just a genuine dislike of sitting on a big bus for hours on end and all the ushering through security etc, but I have no problem travelling anywhere economy.

For minions like me at work, the flight needs to be 4+ hours for business class these days. It amazes me how upset people get about not being able to fly business on a two hour flight!

Business doesn't make flying much more tolerable for me, it's all just a thoroughly unpleasant experience, from getting to the airport to getting to my hotel. Does give me a better quality of rest though, which helps if I've got a lot on when I land.

Good point that peter. Work flew me through the night at the back of the bus to kuwait. Landed and asked to be taken to the hotel. Didnt go down well with the folks in country

I operate a look after number 1 + family and friends policy because work wont. . If i have been up all night thanks to tiny seats im not working in a busy workshop with heavy stuff

I enjoy flying as I fall asleep immediately on any plane. So great time to catch up on forty winks. Airports and specifically immigration and security is a completely different matter. That part is normally an ordeal.

Short haul flying in Europe for business (in any class) is generally unpleasant though. But SW Airlines (the original budget airline) San Diego to San Fran is always a hoot if you are in a suit!!!!!
