looking at getting an oak handrail rail and wondering how much effort It is to finish with lacquer? Or better to go with the ready finished one.

Does it need sanding between coats to smooth any bleeding and do you just spray straight onto the wood?

It’s indoors.

Just oil it...
Lacquer will be a pain in the arse and look shit! Oil will be smooth and sexy in no time!

Lacquer on wood should be banned by law

Why the no likey lacquer? Tbh not sure what to finish them on but had some pine doors in the old house that were unfinished and we varnished and the finish was a bit pants. So wondering if better to go pre finished and the only ones I’ve found are lacquered but cost a fair bit more.

What do I need to do to oil it?

Lacquer is usually a two pack finish, is preferred to be sprayed, though you can roller or brush it on its a pain in the bum to do so, requires a lot of sanding in between coats and a very good quality brush applied with a light hand

And it still might look poor.

Oil going on dead easy, and is easy to reapply. Sanding between coats is very very minor, just a denibbing really. With lacquer its pretty much youre sanding most of it away to get it smooth, then more lacquer followed by loads more sanding, then more lacquer etc etc.

Osmo with finish of your choice. Yes, it seems expensive, but it goes a long, long way and gives a fantastic finish.

Thanks. As it’s Hand and base rails there’s not a massive surface to cover
