Should I discourage feeding all the birds when the better weather arrives so they look for natural food, or just feed them less? Current use the balls and bird seed.

I feed ours all year round, although they eat a lot less in summer. Get through about 20kg of sun flower kernels every 8 months or so!

Yes, do continue. You will find other bird species will pop in and scoff what you've put out for them as your locals will scoot off somewhere else.
