I'm using an extra display with my (old, but intel) iMac. The additional screen is better quality and bigger so that is what i've using as the primary, with the imac screen serving as extra room.

Is there a way to blank to imac screen when i don't need it? (without having to switch back to mirroring)

There's no way* to do this AFAIK. Happy to be proved wrong though...

I looked into doing this on a laptop, but with the display open (don't ask, various reasons).

*relatively easy way. I'm sure it's within the wit of man. I can think of things involving custom DSDTs/driver hacking to remove the internal display as far as osx is concerned.

easy to do on a macbook or similar.

On an IMac, can you adjust the display brightness using F1/F2?

Shades kinda does what your after. It dims the screen to black rather than turns it off tho i think. Can be used with multiple monitors independently.
