I know half the posts have already said some kind of Porsche, but I've always wanted a Cayman, S or a normal one, wouldn't bother me.

Actually, I've always wanted a 968 Clubsport, but that's a 4 pot.

If at the cheap end of the market, don't overlook the 3.0 X-Type.

+230bhp, 6.5 secs 0-60, VTEC and all-wheel drive.

This is fantasy shopping, not nightmare.

E46 330i and Z4 3.0se use the same 231bhp M54 engine. Same block as the 325/2.5 but different intake manifold, brakes, ecu etc. It's not de-tuned, but physically neutered.

The m54 is a cracking engine and bullet proof!

The E46 330/325/320 (all fitted with the m54) but the cylinder sizes are different too? 😆

I've got a 05 330ci- it's thirsty and just about keeps up with modern 118d's. But it's a fantastic car to drive, very entertaining in the right environment and so easy to work on if things go wrong. Plus I can carry two bikes in the back with the seats down.

My next car is probably going to be an RX8 though and i'm not entirely sure why.. 😕

s****.
i ran a chimaera as a daily driver for a few years and put over 45k on one. think it was around 85 or 90k when it went. good fun, good noise and didn't seem to attract too much inverse snobbery. no hint of any engine trouble, though cooling bother i eventually traced to a corroded heater matrix that would cause it to over heat on very hot days in stationary traffic was a nuisance.
service interval is 6k, and it invariably had a little interim visit where something had dropped off, but hey - it was probably 5 or 6k cheaper than the equivalent spec boxster, and that wouldn't have been as quick. arguably it was also more fun to drive. the boxsters are very capable, well balanced cars.
i wouldn't buy again unless it had had a full rebuild as the tubular chassis are susceptible to rot.
i walk past a porsche dealers when i take the dog out sometimes and it does me no good at all. they have a lovely current boxster s in burnt orange at the mo. 😕

Depending on how much you had to spend, you can get a Maserati Granturismo V8 for surprising little money with a Ferrari engine!

Clio V6.

Rarer than a Boxter or a BMW.

If you want to get really silly, there's lots of fun to be had with a fairly mundane car with a hot four cylinder engine up front, like this one:

You can get even sillier if you want:

I had a BMW z4m years ago which sounded nice but this most recent purchase makes it sound tame by comparison

I also had a boxster s which sounded no where near as good as this.

For me, this is the best 6 cylinder sound.

IMO, nothing with a decent 6cyl engine and built in the last 15 or 20 years is "slow" enough to fully extend on the public road.....

you'll need something more classic, with skinny tyres and crappy suspension 😆

What's all this about V8 TVRs?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TVR_Speed_Six_engine

What about the MX3 1.8 V6 😀 ?

If you can find one, Daimler did a 2.5 ltr V8, dinky little motor, would quite possibly go into an MX-5. There used to be a dragster, called the Glacier Grenade, that ran a Daimler V8, had a teeny little home-built supercharger using one of those daft alloy 'bug-catcher things that customisers used to stick on the bonnet of their cars, only this one actually worked, the stock pistons were replaced with TR6 items, and a set of rings lasted an entire season of racing. Used to do consistent 10-second quarter mile runs, IIRC. Americans with huge 500cu in Keith Black or Ed Pink Hemi engines couldn't believe it when they saw it.
Iron block, so not that light, but still light for a V8
Actually, it was faster than I remembered, it ran a 7.2 second quarter at 180mph, using a practically stock 2.5 V8!

Wouldn't touch a home-grown TVR engine with yours....sonorous as they are!

How a corrado vr6 0-60 in about 6 seconds with a superb soundtrack. Or a more modern golf R32.

The TVR rebuild comments are nonsense. The Griffith, Chimaera and V8S all have a bullet proof mildly modified rover V8 engine (mine is currently on 105k with no issues). The later TVRs have a TVR manufactured engine which is more fragile and the early speed 6's had a cam/valve issue which required a rebuild to sort out.
Before my current one I had an S3 (which has the 2.9 V6 out of the scorpio) - I did over 100k in this as well without any issues. In my experience any TVR reliability issues are down to lack of use or care (owning one is a hobby rather than an A to B practical thing).
