How about "save yourself all the palaver of pi$$ing around with costumes, because we all know the novelty of what we're wearing will wear off after about ten minutes and we'll just get on with having a party like we would have done whether we'd dressed up or not"

The one I went to last last was 'mad hatters tea party/alice in wonderland', had cupcakes, skittles flavoured vodka, other cocktails in teapots and the most terrifying cheshire cat costume I've ever seen...
