[#1491607]

I'm up north for the week and just watched the local news! I had to check the date coz I thought it may still be the first of April!! Apparently the local army ranges have simulated a mosque on the army shooting range by ( what it looked like) putting a green dome above the normal shooting range houses! This has caused much upset to the Muslim community! What a load of boll0x!!! As the bulletin finished it stated " further to our lead story the army are to look into the matter of using mosques as targets" WTF it's pretend!!!

Yeah sounds like a load of bollox to me. So what if the army shoots at 'simulated mosques' ?
As you say - it's all just pretend. I hope they also shoot at cardbord cut-outs of muslim figures.

They could perhaps also include some of children and old people - just to keep it proper realistic like.
And maybe a big one of an Afghan wedding party .....that would be a right easy target to shoot at though.

I heard this on the radio today. Seems a fair enough complaint IMO. MOD have apologised and are working with Muslim community to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I can just see the outrage! in the Daily Mail if Muslim troops were seen training using a crappy replica of a Cof E village church.

I think it's all part of the desensitization programme. I'm a bit quiet on the flooring side at the moment. I was thinking maybe I could jigsaw lifesize Suzuki Carry vans (so cute) and telephoto lenses from a bit of spare plywood I've got lying around...better than scratching my arse.

Lots of Muslim troops in the British army. Unless you mean we at war with the state of Muslimia?

I think I know the answer to this one.........it's Islam - isn't it ?

So it seems only fair that Our Boys should learn how to target and attack mosques.
Or villages with mosques in them anyway.

And no tj I genuinely can't see why it's wrong! Pathetic yes, that the army would spend money on ****ing about putting green domes on range targets, when it could be used to improve life in barracks! End of the day, target is target, no matter what house, tent, mosque, cave or dirt hole they live in! But national news and local outcry, my arse!!!

But national news and local outcry, my arse!!!

I couldn't agree more wrighty .......the whole "story" is a complete non issue.

In fact, I bet you had to think long and hard whether it was even worth posting a thread up about it.

.

BTW, you said that you had just watched it on local news - has it made it to national news in the time since you first started this thread ? .......truly unbelievable ๐Ÿ˜

Nothing wrong with simulating the types of buildings they will be fighting in, complaining about it is just a farce.

Was just presuming Barry b wasn't from this area, he'd also heard about it, just had a quick look at his profile but no location info, so i may be wrong about it making national news! I'll check the gardyournan in the morning to see. Oh btw, if it's such a non story why do you feel so compelled to repeatedly post?

*trying to remember the last time there was a pagger in a House of (any) God.*

Oh yeah, the turning out of the traders from the temple in The Bible was mentioned only a few pages back.*

*Notwithstanding a particular nefarious Scottish clan pushing over a burning church to kill off a whole other clan...

Just a bunch of thicko cannon-fodder squaddies 'having a laugh'. A non-story really. A real story would be to report how many more innocent people have died today in illegal wars..

Nothing wrong with simulating the types of buildings they will be fighting in, complaining about it is just a farce.

Do our troops only fight in places where every building is a mosque?

Forgive me if I'm wrong - but I don't think 'our' troops aren't actually shooting at/in mosques on a regular basis. Isn't most of the fighting done in either the dessert/mountain ranges, or in generic dusty streets? I've not heard anything about troops shooting up mosques, in fact I'd be willing to bet they try and shy away from killing people there (hearts & minds and all that).

Assuming what I've said is true, dressing the target range up as mosques is pointless and only encourages the view that we're fighting a war on Islam.

how d'you know they aren't simulating green flying saucers from mars. There could be an invasion imminent. Does the MOD know something we don't?

I've run out of tin foil! sheeeit.

Probably quite a number of things, Kevevs. They won't tell you though; it's for your own safety.

Oh dear. Is it worth trying to explain?

In many parts of the world especially where Islam - even moderate Islam - is common the wars being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan are seen as attacks upon Islam - a new crusade for a new century. Making an obvious symbol of Islam as a target will just reinforce this feeling.

Its about as offensive as it could be to these people. Whether it is reasonable or not to take that offence is neither here nor their.

Its hardly going to help people to understand that the war is against their corrupt rulers ( supposedly) rather than their religion.

No, but then all the buildings they fight in are not cardboard or lined up with fake metal people to the sides either, but you wouldn't suggest they use real people and build whole buildings for the range training, would you? It's a predictable childish response, poor choice on the part of the army purely because they're bound to bring on this sort of childish moaning from do-gooders.

Wasn't he the ****stani lad in 'Rita, Sue and Bob Too' (one of the finest films ever to be made in Bradford)?

Maybe it's actually Aslef?

Whatever you say about the followers of Muhammed PBUH, they make damn fine marching banners. Check out that stitching. It's no wonder their burkhas, hijabs etc never fall off.

Surely this is no different to the 'German village' and the 'Irish village' on the Epynt ranges in Wales?

I'm not saying its the right way to go on but these places do exist ... to allow our soldiers to practice kicking down doors and killing people!!

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I seem to recall there is a church there too.

If they're going to go the whole hog and build an Aslef village then they should do it properly and build versions of the kinds of buildings that actually exist - not just stick a cardboard dome on top as that's both incredibly offensive and a pointless waste of money. Whoever thought this up must have thought it through very hard - I assume that the decision to do so wasn't taken by someone in a position of authority? Or should I not be surprised...

Let's be honest, it's what they'll probably end up shooting at in real life anyway and a bit of humour about it's fair game.

Just what I was thinking too....
I suspect that there were one or two mock-ups of British towns, maybe with churches (ideal for snipers), in the Communist-bloc.

I'm sure whichever soldier came up with the idea for fitting domes to the range to make it more realistic(!) didn't think very much about all and certainly not if it was going to be offensive.

It's a bit daft of the army to go along with it, but hardly the greatest crime in the world.

-Will there always be at least one follower of islam who will be offended by anything?

If the domes were a different colour would it make a difference?

(Edit: Somebody in our office pointed out that using green paint wasn't that surprising as the army must have a lot of surplus green paint at the moment ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

As I can't see any actual links to the story, can I be tedious and ask for clarification:

Was the mosque replica an actual target on the range or was it a building in a mock-up villages like the one that they use for training (like the one they have in Cyprus).
