.....if Williams are anything to go by. I actually don't think it looks completely vomit inducing, but hardly seductive!

I wondered why Farce India's 2014 contender was only photographed in profile.

Obviously it's best side.

I don't care what any look like so long as they can compete with whatever Adrian Newey designs.

The cars will all look great side on - they look how the rules were supposed to make them look. Unfortunately at any other angle they're almost certainly going to look like the Williams (or worse 😯 )

the 420 "bits" of aero on the wing look more daft than the gonzo bit.

thought the front wings were going to be much narrower overall.

rear might look a bit odd too with a gaping hole, but not as silly as the 70's? with huge wings 6ft in the air on stilts.

Oh yes, I remember those wings way up in the air. They were odd. But so were the skirts and the 6 wheeled car (Tyrell?)

As someone up there already said - the additional elements on the front wing look gash on all the cars.

The thing is that everyone knew that we were gonna get these fugly cars this year (and 2 years ago when the stepped noses appeared) but nobody did anything about it.

There again there's the old adage about racing cars : "If it's quick, it's beautiful".

The Lotus interpretation is interesting, look forward to seeing a front on photo.

Good they've gone for a classic British "two finger" up yours rather than "the bird" of other teams 😉

Allegedly, that Lotus one incorporates a fork lift action so when Grosjean slams into the back of the car in front, it will flip them out of the way.....! 😀

Self righting mechanisms would make things interesting!

The Lotus is the best looking, the Force India looks great in profile, but I imagine it's just as gopping as the others head on!

Is it just me or are the two prongs of that Lotus's nose asymmetrical?

I assume as well that it must have a little stumpy willy in the middle to meet the regs. So the Williams has a willy and the Lotus has a man-gina.

I used to work with the blokes who built Dominator2. They used to whack car doors to bits in the work car park when they were testing it.

mmmmmmm philippa forrester!

i wonder how many times we are going to see that little nose broken and loose as the cars can still go round the track without any real effect....

IIRC the rules are on max chassis height at certain positions - the intention being to create lower noses to prevent cars riding over each other in crashes and to limit aero. There isn't enough of a restriction on the minimum cross section of the nose though, so to meet the regs & gain the most aero benefit the solution is to minimise the forward (lower) section of the nose to gain max airflow under the car.

The Lotus solution is interesting - I guess it's the camera angle that makes the nose look asymmetric but at first glance they'll get smoother flow directly under the chassis whereas the anteater/finger/willy noses will be more disturbed after flowing round the proboscis.

Wonder what other options we'll see.

So the lotus has a wonky cameltoe?

Look at the old McLrens in the background above, cars like the MP4/6 just look so good with none of these crappy bits sticking out.

Ah, so Scarbs thinks they are asymmetric and that is how they meet the regs. Very interesting.

More importantly than any of the willy-nose stuff, Kamui Kobayashi is back in Formula 1!!! Always been one of my favourite drivers. Driving for Caterham though unfortunately 🙁

Ferrari looks more like what the FIA intended but it looks like they'll struggle to get the same aero performance from their nose as others. Similar to when McLaren went with a lower nose a couple of years back, then changed it pretty quickly.

Tyrrell P34 was the only one which raced
[img] [/img] Obvious advantage of smaller frontal area but lack of tyre development for the little ones killed it off.
A few others tried prototypes, like this Williams:
[img] [/img]
.
Most of the really interesting stuff gets banned pretty quick, like the twin-chassis Lotus, which never raced. The Brabham BT46B was so left-field that it never even crossed their minds to ban something like that until after they had seen one (it won on it's first and only outing)

Driving for Caterham though unfortunately

I know a couple of people at Caterham, and they're feeling pretty good about the season to come, fwiw.

Then again, they would say that - and given last season, the only way that's not out is up!

I really hope so! Speaking both as a Kamui Kobayashi fan and just for Formula 1 as a whole- its a bit of a downer seeing the last two teams only competing with themselves..

And rarely getting a point to show for their efforts. This is why I think there should be points all the way down to last place. Currently 11th would be a decent result for them but they get nothing to show for it in terms of points.

Hope Kamui does well this year, always quite exciting to watch 🙂

That's surprising, since Tony Fernandez made some fairly unhelpful remarks that just wobbling around at the back wasn't worth turning out for. It's the last chance this year; which must be added pressure where they don't need it.

Click

As a note of sanity, the idea of the high nose is to get as much air as possible into the underfloor area and through the diffuser. Ferrari might find they have gone exactly the wrong way and face a huge battle to get decent lap times.

Lotus might have a upper hand. We won't find out at the first test, though, as Lotus can't afford the bus fare.

Ferrari May be attempting to create an area of low pressure behind the nose which both increase down flow and still pull in air for the rear diffuser.

The Sauber nose looks quite like the McLaren. You can see the wing mounts from the side just behind the wing.

I get all the sponsors are loving the attention their branding on the noses is getting.

But they've not been that great at designing winning cars lately - IMO Alonso has worked wonders with what he's been given. I'd love to see them back at the front though.

Enzo Ferrari did once say that aerodynamics were for people who couldn't design engines.

Maybe that philosophy lives on...
