Has anyone ever done this? I need to temporarily ~ 9 month, move the Virgin box and router about 60-70 meters further from the road. Is it possible to splice into the cable to extend it. I'm sure there are some "ownership issues", but in theory how would it be done?? OR, what's the maximum length of COAX you could run from the permanent point?
ta.
Do you mean the cable from the junction to the box and (separate) cable to the router? If so, go to Screwfix/Maplins/whoever and they will sell you cable in various lengths/fittings. I got about 5 recently, think it's called audio visual cable or something similar
Depends how far you are from the box on the street. Pretty sure max effective length for coax cable in these circumstances is 300-600ft. If you can keep power to the modem I think you'd have more success just running an ethernet cable.
i suppose either option
1. extending the cable from the roadside to the first box on "on the wall" (i.e. move the very first junction box so i don't ned to extend the coax)
or
2. using a bl8dy long coax from the existing box on the wall.
The house is due to be demolished, but so we are re-locating down the bottom of the garden, so i'd like to be able to keep the Virgin going. Just not sure if there would be issues trying to extend the road to wall cable, or using long COAX with power loss issues.. We're nto far from the main cabinet, maybe 100m or so.
I would have thought Virgin owned the cable from road to wall so I wouldn't touch that without their permission (which they won't give). Whether you could do it without them noticing is a different matter, possibly although they may also detect a line fault and send an engineer out to investigate.
I recently extended a sky dish cable with an extender costing me about £2.50 from eBay, albeit for only a couple of metres. Shouldn't be any reason why you shouldn't do the same for your Virgin coax cable.
Cheers, Rich
If the OP had gone to Google rather than STW he’d have found there’s loads of cheap ready made extension cables around......
the op did go to google and is aware you can extend things in many different ways, but the op was not / is not sure if the length im doing it at is suitable.
Also, and this may be a crazy idea, but is a chat forum, populated by mostly middle class IT folk and general geekery, not to the place to ask people who may have direct experience in such matters, a credible solution for finding said info out?
Anyway cheers to the constructive help so far given.
