Has anyone had any experience with any of the auction sites apart from Evilbay? I'm really pained to sell anything any more because of the outrageous final value fees, but wonder if specialist bits and pieces would get enough attention away from ebay?

I owe ebay £300 this month after selling a couple of camera bits and then paypal takes another huge bite.

Anyone?

Never had a problem till this week as a buyer and seller, buyer decided to send to a unknown address in the UK but 50% understandable as he's a foreigner.

Winning bidder decided to not contact and make payment for an item he clearly won and got a good deal on.

Will take him to the cleaners soon even if Ebay won't chase up to resolve to collect the monies, I WILL!

Waste of excitement benderbay is and would cost a lot to get involved on a regular basis so avoid at all costs I would suggest at this point in time.

Have a happy day to you and if there's anything else you would like explaining to you then that'll be 11p per minute!

If you 'owe' £300 then you you have received considerably more in sale value. Suck it up. Or put a card on the local supermarket 'For Sale' board.

That's like saying if I give you £5 and you have to give someone else £1 its a good deal. It doesn't take into account why you are getting the £5.

They are all charging a % service charge for providing a service that allows you to make and close the sale. Nothing wrong in that is there? I don't understand why you think they shouldn't run their business at a profit.

This. As MF says, put a card up in your local supermarket if you'd rather, or use gumtree etc.
Ebay gives you access to the largest possible marketplace of potential buyers, especially for 'specialist bits and pieces'. You have to pay for that service. What % service charge do you think would be reasonable?

My thoughts exactly - how much did you sell? And how much would the lease on a shop have cost to sell all that stuff legitimately?
(fees depend on final selling price -> sp = £100 or more, fee=£1.30. for you to be owe £300, you sold around 230 items over £100, earning you £23,000)

Ebay take approx 10% of your final selling price, a bit more on lower value items maybe where the insertion fee plays a greater part. It's my experience when I sell stuff through ebay that I tend to get at least 10% more for it than I would anywhere else I can think of to sell it. I don't think the elusive method of selling for ebay prices without their commission exists for most stuff.

BBSB - your maths are a bit duff. Sell 4 items worth £750 and you would own Ebay circa £300. So that's only £3K of sales.

+1

I stick stuff on here and if no one bites, it goes on Ebay, normally for about 20% more than on STW.

So your eBay fees for selling a "couple of camera bits" we're £300 ?

Doing the Maths in my head, I reckon the final value of your sales would need to be in excess of £7500 to make your fees that much.

Gumtree for me really for selling. Had a lot more success with there and keeping all the value of the sale is a bonus.

I still find myself looking at eBay for buying stuff though. Sometimes those little niche things can be found...

you're right, i only saw the insertion fees, not the rest of it.
But, if you sell 230 things @ £100 then commission = £10/sale= £2300. total sales = £23000, net = £20700. you won't get that kind of turnover from a card in Tesco, and you're still probably doing better in terms of price/customer reached than a shop front, where let's face it, most people who run up bills of £300 could be operating
