Charity's often a personal thing, isn't it? I try to do something regularly for Macmillan Cancer Support, because they were so good with both my parents when first my dad, then later mum got ill.

Try to pick something that means something to you, and you feel strongly about.

Since you posted the question on here, Bullheart might be great suggestion, actually. Inspirational bloke...

British Diabetic Association or a local arm of it...even better, one of the kid's versions of it so it is going to help the youngsters...

on the same lines as mountain rescue, two others I give to out of enlightened self-interest in case I ever need them are RNLI and the Air Ambulance as both entirely funded by donations I believe. Overseas Savwe the Children, Comic Relief?

I found this site really good:
http://www.givingwhatwecan.org/resources/charity-comparisons.php

Its uses World Health Organisation studies to evaluate how much good a charitable donation will actually do. Value is measured in Disability adjusted life years (DALYs).

So, say, giving someone an extra year of healthy life when they would otherwise die is worth one DALY, giving someone an extra year of sight when they would otherwise go blind is worth something like 0.4 DALYs.

I'm remarkably cynical of charities - I don't get how people can donate to the RSPCA so that a guy can wear a uniform to re-house dogs while the same amount of money can add a load of healthy years to some poor guys life so he can continue to support his family.

Like others say, it's a personal thing, I like to give to Cardiac Research in the Young because I've lost a friend to an undiagnosed heart condition.

I agree with many of the comments that it should probably mean something to you.

Lifeboats, mtn rescue

Starving children, international disasters

Personal experiences - cancer research, diabetes etc

I benefit from charitable donations to CRUK - in that they support the research I do. I think its a very well run organisation - but find something that fits for you.

My wife and mum both suffer, with my mum donating lots of time to educate children is schools around the South.

This is a very underfunded charity, who spend lots on reserch and do get results!!

Anyone except the Donkey Sanctuary!!! Believe it or not crazy old rich folk down here in Devon leave their entire estates to bloody Donkeys!!!
Nevermind all the sick, homeless, disabled and needy PEOPLE in the UK, let's leave it to some donkeys!!! Geeez.

A charity which has a had an influence on your life is the best to choose.

Personally SANDS and The Laura Centre.

Also small local charities can really struggle, so look local.

Just now I'm donating to unisef and oxfam, however there are loads of charities to choose from.

I would like to help out kids in third world coutries, as they've got it quite rough and some other charities as well.

I think I will also give some to mountain rescue and similar charities, just in case, as for bullheart.

I'm doing my donating through ebay, so I'm not sure if I can add that charity, but I will go now and try and change some of the listings.

If evolution is a race...., then one might say that Humans have won it ?....Whatever !.

But assuming we are the winners, the prize maybe considered that we are now the caretakers of this planet and all the life on it.

So sadly, IMO, its unfortunate then, that some people do not seem to treat other creatures with the respect and the care that I think we should.

So, I donate to the RSPCA.

There, thats my two penneth worth.

Thanks for asking though, and I'm not saying that the other real recommendations here aren't equally as deserving, they are !.

Good on you for wanting to donate, and for joining the club of us folk who donate their hard earned.

Top effort !.

Concern universal, what's that?. Is the bullheart team a registered charity?

You can invite charities onto ebay and then donate to them?

I saw that on the website, however do you want me to donate to team bullheart or sarcomatrust?

Emma82 I will alter some listings tomorrow, everyone else tomorrow after I have a good sleep I'll look through the other suggestions, since I have a good 50 listings just now to play about with I should be able to donate to quite a few, I'm not sure how much but something.

I'm off just now I'm knackered, if you have any suggestions let me know. thanks!

From bitter experience, dont donate to the so called in name charity i worked for, we did a street collection, i collected hundreds of envelopes of money, we hand delivered the week before, on return to base the envelopes where emptied out in a locked office, there where two piles of money one for the charity and a bigger pile for expenses, for the other 2 staff.

When i questioned the amount we raised i was told it was none of my buissness, and the cash for the manager and other staff member was for expenses.I was ofered nothing and neither would i have taken anything.
A few days latter got a written warning about my behaviour, and a few weeks latter i was sacked by recorded delivery letter,on the same day as i sent in my resignation.Reason being i was anti social and failed to comunicate.

Also ask these charities how much they pay their fundraising managers, some pay massive salaries which is then taken out of your donation.

If you want to donate ring your charity up, ask them what theyre wanting to buy and go out and buy it for them, a lot easier and more accountable.

Sustrans? I used to support them, though they have become a bit unfocussed lately.
There are some very aggressive 'charities', shelter picked on my son and made him think he was contracted to pay up by direct debit. When he canceled this, they said he'd missed a payment and raised the amount like he'd defaulted on a loan repayment. I was livid.

kaesae; Donate to a charity that means something to you. If you choose to donate to the Sarcoma Trust, maybe you could do it through the Bullheart JustGiving page, if only for the fact that you can select gift aid. That goes for any charity you choose to support.

But there are many deserving and equally important charities that deserve support, so support who you think will benefit most. Good on you.

project - I feel for you. It's all over the place and even charities that claim to only have a 10% (or whatever) admin fee sometime take that off after the expenses of collecting money. It's not quite as transparent as you would like. Charity christmas cards are a particularly bad example.

However, don't let it put folks off. If you want the best chance of your money getting where you think it should go then:

1. Give online on the site for the charity directly (cut out as many intermediate costs). Try to make the donation at least 5 squids so not too much gets eaten in handling fees.

2. Specify a particular project or country if at all possible. That stops most of the money going in to the general pot and certainly in the country where I work it puts limits on how much we can take in admin fee.

3. Specify that you DON'T want any further mailings, phone calls or magazines unless of course you actually want to support them long term. Otherwise the cost of sending this stuff out to you will eat up your donation.

That's it. I work for a charity and although we would much prefer to have long term supporters and be in communication with them so we can do the sorts of projects that they want, we would also not want to waste money when folks just want to do a one off donation.

Hello again, I'm just relisting some of my bearing kits and adding extra ones, since part of what I'm doing is trying to get people involved, does anyone have any more suggestions on charities we should be giving to through ebay?

Just now I'm giving to oxfam and unicef, I'm also giving to concern universal as it was suggested last time, is there any charities that you think we should support?

Not attention seeking ass hat, I'm trying to get people involved in what I'm doing, however I'm sure if both of us have an argument we will be able to get more people involved.

Never mind I'll go off and get back to it, maybe at some point in the future humanity will stop all of the talking and debating and actually start working together to accomplish something, preferably before we wipe ourselves from the face of the earth.

If anyone wants to get involved and has a suggestion on worth while charities, just email me, my contact details are in my profile, as for all of the Over Opinionated Shit Chucking Monkeys on this forum, I'll leave you to continue transforming STW into the online equavalent of Shitty Little Britain ๐Ÿ˜€

You could always just donate to charities without telling us all about it. Or does that not get you the attention you desire? Same outcome for the charities and your ego not bruised. Win!

What exactly are you trying to get people involved with - buying your 3rd party bearing kits?

You're a worse salesman than ginger Neil.

Any charity that does NOT pay for places on the London marathon. I don't think any charitable board that pays thousands for guaranteed spots is making best use of their donations.

Yes TooTall I see your point and your perspective, I can involve you in deciding what charities we as in us on STW and anyone else that supports me donate too, by not involving you โ“

You make more out of what I'm doing than is actually there! as always you apply your perspective and biast to my actions, do you watch a lot of TV and when you do are you ever wrong in your assumtions โ“

Does anyone want to be involved with what I'm doing, the simple tooling, the service guides, the help and support for riders and clubs, the charity donations, anyone want to see if there is a better way of looking at the world and getting stuff done โ“

Yunki, I was thinking that last time, that at least some of the money should go back into charities that help out bikers, of all the groups of people that use the country side, us lot are far more likely to get stretchered back to civilization than any other.

I watch almost no TV and do my bit to change the world to be a better place. I just don't see the point in waving my winky about on STW to further my personal wishes.
Then again, if I were a cycle-related business trying to draw attention to myself, it might be different.

Give to a small local one run and staffed by volunteers, no big salaries to pay or fancy cars for execs to pay for, there's loads out there' ie homeless charities, animal sanctuarys and day centres for oap's and the disabled that are having funding slashed at the mo
I always give to the small soup kitchens in London rather than the big charities as I've seen the cars the execs run and I allways think who payed for the 30k plus bm's I've seen them driving,
