[#7055967]

looks like my Passat could be on it's way out & admittedly I bought a turkey, so I'm looking around.
Choices & thoughts up to now are Mondeo Titanium X (massive capacity) Insignia CDTi (not as much capacity but look ok) another Passat (big enough) Toyota Avensis. Skoda Octavia. Anything else?
Also, what are the Insignia's like engine & reliability wise? there's plenty of 2011/12 plates for less than 8k with 80-90k miles.
Any ideas?

VWTouran.

I was looking at Passats/mondeo/3 series/Octavia/A4/A6/ C class etc, found there was always a compromise with every car I tried. Toucan drives like a Golf (maybe a golf plus as its a bit wallowy at the moment), three adults in the back, 2 extra seats when you need them, massive boot when you don't. £275 gets you a simple remap from 140bhp to 184bhp.

Octavia here, had a touran and really loved it but love the Octavia more, perhaps because its a vrs version so no remap needed! found that I can get a trek remedy 29er in the boot, wheels out, parcel shelf in place and rear seats up in the car! great when leaving it overnight. touran was better fuel wise but then the Octavia is more grin inducing.

We are seeing a lot of issues with Insignias, mainly electrical and cooling, with a few gearboxes thrown in. Avoid.

rear brakes bind, plus they are generally just crap - small loading opening for boot too

Thats the Insignia crossed off the list then!

I don't really need or want grin inducing options (got the wife's CLK 320 for that) I need reliability, economy, capacity & a little bit of go. The 130 TDi Passat is quick enough for me in general day to day use.
The Mazda 6 looks decent, something like this maybe?

Skoda superb estate. Incredible spec for the money, basically an audi a6 without the badge. Acres of space and 50mpg.

I'd go superb estate - a very nice, roomy place to be

My cycling buddy has just bought a Superb estate and it's mahoosive; the leg room is so long that in the back you actually feel a bit lost. I believe it's a Passat B8 re-styled.

Well I've had a good look on Fleabay & Auto trader & there's not many Superbs about (in diesel estate version) which says a lot about them I suppose.

Focus a bit small? I have a 2011 new shape focus estate diesel Tit X for sale.... 45k miles under £10K 😉

On topic - for a big car mondeo or superb would be my choice especially at that money when they've already had the big hit. I'd probably save the couple of grand and get the mondeo. The new focus was a lot nicer place to be than the outgoing mondeo though which is the main reason why I picked it along with the cleaner engine (for company tax reasons) if you can live with the slightly smaller vehicle.

Got a 2011 Mondeo 2.2 diesel TXS Estate. Bought it at 12 month old and 6k on the clock. Now got 125k on it and it's been faultless. The boot is always full of tools and gear plus if I drop the seats I can get a bike across the back just by dropping the wheels out as well. Never been a ford fan but for value and as a work horse it's hard to fault.

We've got a subaru forester with tow bar to take a thule rack...
Works fine, very expensive petrolwise, but then it's a tank!
Daughter and partner have just bought a MB vito, 5 seats, five doors, takes five bikes, or two and their tandem..and they're ditching the tent, because they can sleep in the van...and mercs go..on..and on..and on.. for ever.

I've had a passat estate from 2002 which was nice.

I also had a 60 plate Mazda 6 sport estate which was a lovely car but the paint was crap. Very thin a d marked easily.

I've now got this ......

It's a nicer motor than the Mazda but it is looooong. I struggle to get it in a normal sized parking bay.

The Mazda was lots better on fuel though.

I looked at the previous generation Octavia estate and the rear leg room was a bit tight to be honest.

You could get a lot of Citroën C5 for your budget OP.
If that doesn't flick your switch maybe look for a V70...

Had a Superb estate from work for a few days, & really didn't want to give it back.
Lovely car.
Would happily buy one.

Late to the party and I've just stuck this is another thread. As inappropriate suggestions go this is a corker!

Leaves you a good few thousand for a new bike or two as well 😀

I run an aged '53' plate Volvo V70 D5 . Its a nice place to be with leather , air , cruise etc. 29er FS in the back wheels on, 6ft flat load bed with seats down.

You could find a newer 185bhp 6 speed model on a 07 - 08 in your budget

Awfull steering lock though , like a van and so bad it makes parking in supermarkets a joke. If you live with this they arent bad cars .

Heavy though at 1650kgs so dont expect 60mpg and sports perfrormance . I can get 50+ mpg from mine with the 5 speed , but that is driving sensibly not progressively

For 7-8k you could get the prettiest estate ever in 1750 turbo charge form, or 2.4 diesel in very good condition...

Nice to look at & maybe even to drive but I wouldn't touch an Alpha with a long stick, not since my mate had one with a poltergeist in the electrics.

They aren't like that anymore, thats just a continuation of days of old. But you keep you blinkers on, it makes them more rare on the road for the rest of us. The 159 is a massively improved car. Pretty much the only unique issue is a weak solenoid in the front electric windows and a wearing microswitch for the boot lights.

Saab 95 estate? I've got the diesel and its pretty good. Loads of room for bikes and a bit different to the rest of the wagons...

@Kryton a colleague of mine bought a new Alfa 5 years ago, no end of trouble inc electrics. I think they are great looking and driving cars but I'd never own one.

Well I've whittled it down to the Mondeo or another Passat. The Mazda looks good but the compromise is the space, the Skoda Superb looks superb but theyr'e like rocking horse shite to get hold of, the Avensis is a similar vehicle, the 2.2 is the one but hardly any around (in my budget & within 100 miles).

Which are the ones to avoid though? Looking at 2009 & newer models of Passats & Mondeo's up to 8K.

I've got a 2009 Mondeo estate and it is pretty damn large.

I can get two sets of rollers, three track bikes (with front wheels removed) and all of the gubbins in the back without folding down any seats.

If you take a front wheel out and do not fold the seats down the bike will go in sideways (forks to the left, rear wheel to the left).

Having said that, with three of us cycling/racing regularly I am looking at trading it in for a van.

Update. Searched high & low & finally bought a 10 plate Titanium X. 88K. Very tidy, with enough extras to keep me busy (cooled seats, didn't know they existed)
Dropped the rear seats & I reckon it's pretty massive, much bigger than a Transit 😉
Came back from work in it & it was showing 60.3 mpg, I'll fill it up on payday & check it properly though. It seems like a lot of motor for what I paid & It's very solid to drive.

Happy me.

Good choice. went from Mondeo to Passat - Mondeo was just a bit better (apart from the looks and the sound system!)

I wouldn't discount a Passat again, my 1st one had 235K on when I traded it for the one I've just got shot of, which (after about a month I realised it had had a hard life)
I love the looks & size of the Mondeo & the Sony sound system is miles better than the Passat one.
Still a bit of a Pasatt aficionado though.
