After a small argument with a canal bridge which resulted in 23 staples and a fair amount of blood loss, my wife has now insisted I take a phone out when I go running. But I HATE running with anything more than a key and my running watch so there’s not way in the world I’m taking my iPhone out with me.

What I need is a small, light phone on a PAYG SIM that I can take with me. Doesn’t need any features bar the ability to call and send a text, size and weight are the key things. Any suggestions?

I used to carry an MTT 2G phone like this one : https://www.mobiletoutterrain.com/EN/telephone-tout-terrain.html?cat=1&id_product=10442

for the same reasons.

Not what you asked but have you thought about an Apple Watch with built in 3G/4G. Don’t know whether it’ll do everything your running watch will so but it might..

popular with those smuggling stuff into custody centres and prisons...

re: PAYG - a lot have a 'make a call a month' thing on PAYG and also expire credits after a period of time but I think vodaphone don't expire the credits (but still require a regular call to be made).

You  don't need anything speciual

Any cheap phone with buttons on in Asda/ Argos will have about 2 weeks of standby battery life and weight nowt compared to a smart phone

I was thinking of those small phones, but on a practical level they must have a small battery, and after falling and banging my head/hands I reckon big buttons and familiarity would be very useful.

Maybe swap your exiting phone for one of the 'mini' ~4" smartphones rather than the full size ~5" versions, They're barely bigger than the old 'candy bar' phones, you could even get a wrist strap for it.

PAYG old Nokia with keys in the household for exactly this reason. Cost £4 off ebay. 3 day battery.

Agree with Apple Watch being a sound option if it works for the exercise stuff for you. Fall detection gives a bit of reassurance too in case you did knock yourself out. Cellular ones seem to get discounted a bit more, sometimes get series 3 ones pop up well under £300.

Else a prison bumphone as linked above will be small and easy to carry.

a whole consumer electronics category I never knew about.

Amazon is now recomending I buy condoms and anal lube....

But why the voice changing, are these just for drug overlords threatening witnesses?

Decathlon do some shortswith a pocket that sits in the small of your back- stuff isn’t quite as annoying in there,it doesn’t jiggle about as much.

As sort of said above, PAYG SIMs tend to be more expensive and more of a hassle than expected and you'll most likely stop topping it up / taking it with you after a couple of months of never using it.
Seeing as you'd have to figure out a way of carrying the phone with you anyway, just get a £10 armband phone holder and use your existing one.

I've run with a phone armband before, personally didn't notice the weight there. YMMV. Agree that a 2nd phone is just going to be a ball ache, plus you've got to carry it anyway no matter how small/light it is. Apple Watch is gonna be the best solution (works fine as a running watch IME) obviously £££ though.
