[Closed] E=mc^2?

[#5303737]

...or more to the point:

why is c the square root of E/m?

why not the cube root, or the 42nd root.
or half?
or 1/678590876445?
or Sin?/Cos?/Tan? + i

The universe appears to hang together on the whim of a rather prosaic mathematical function. On a recent ride I was wondering why it the ratio or Energy, mass and light wasnt more "exciting".

Has TdF stage 7 started yet, I need a distraction...

For a start - it's the only way the units match up.

But what is the question CFH?

You think that's interesting consider the sqrt of 2, fantastic number, its what makes our system of paper sizing work.

Or Pi, how did anyone actually work out the value of that number anyway?
No seriously, you can measure it, but not accurately, someone had to work it out.

But in answer to your question, it's mostly down to using sensible units of measurement, imagine what it would be if you were using imperial units...

This will bend your mind, you think in numbers based around ten. But a better number to base it around would be 12. Only 12 wouldn't be twelve, it would a be 10, but with two extra numbers between it and 9.

how many times will CFH mention the BA lounges this week?

But what is the question CFH?

What is 6 x 9?

Anyhow, it's interesting to compare with kinetic energy - E=(1/2)mv^2

Meh, S=A/4 is where it's at. So simple for something so complex.

unklehomered - Pi is a non recurring irrational number so can never be fully worked out, just calculated to LOTS of decimal places. And BTW there are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Oh, and the one that always makes me go "woah" is: e^i? = -1

this is a personal favourite of mine: e^i?=-1

https://xkcd.com/179/

and in stonerworld, everything would be base 60 like the babylonians.

12 factors Rools!

EDIT: Hah! Ben. I think we might be on similar wavelengths. Is there a documented coincidence of Rohloff fans and e^i?=-1 fans? I think we need to know.

Because its mostly good enough on the scale to which its applied.

.9999 recurring = 1

****s enough people's heads in my experience without getting into noneuclidean geometry

I am not sure but,

I know C is calculated as a ration between the size of two forces (I am sure it was Maxwell that did this) so it follows that in E=MC2 Eistein used Maxwells work to link these forces to mass and energy.

Again I might be completely wrong, and it was a long time since I did my natural Sciences degree!

noneuclidean geometry

if it cant be done with a rule and pair of compasses and pencil, it cant be done at all. FACT!

nickc - my fave head *****er is demonstrating that there must be different sizes of infinity. Easily done on the back of a beer mat.

No, I stand by that, it's completely correct.

In base 13 😉

It's true regardless of units. Measuring energy in tonne furlongs per fortnight squared is just as valid as joules. Just not as easy.

12 factors Rools!

Base 12 is logically superior to base 10.
But it can be a bit of a head**** to understand it initially.

I used to know hexadecimal quite well - did a module on computer programming and memory as part of computational chemistry at uni so an understanding of hex was very useful.

+1 for that book above, Alex's Adventures in Numberland. Fascinating read.

The purist

How long is a piece of string? Depends on how fast your going?

Or

What do we want?
Time travel
When do we want it?
It's irrelevant.

6 x 9 = 42

Anyone who doesn't understand this should go back to their school and ask for their money back.

I guess he means that you should have been taught that base-10 is only one way of counting.

Actually the base 13 thing is just coincidence, the root cause is the intimely introduction of Telephone Sanitisers into the Gene Pool.

It's funny how the world can be divided between people who've read H2G2 and those who haven't - it's all the inside jokes.

Like I was discussing democracy with someone recently, and I said something about how the wrong lizard might get in - I just got a blank look.

It's a bit like The Big Lebowski that way.
