I've inherited one when I moved. What do I do with it? Does it ever need servicing, maintaining, cleaning? Or do I just leave it to go up and down every day? I notice a lot of grease on the "spiril helix" type rod that drives it, so does it need a grease every now and again?

What make is it?

On my Hormann one you're supposed to grease the rollers that the door itself runs in.

Before anyone accuses me of being a gadget freak, I got a sectional door because they are more secure, and the electric opener is more secure than the lever. Together they cost the same as having Homeserve out to fit a crappy thin door, which is the value the insurance paid out.

How do you get on having lost the ceiling space? We hang all sorts of stuff up there.

I'll have to find out in the morning molgrips, I can't be bothered to walk to the end of the garden now, i've just made a cup of tea.

Its got a spiral rod that the motor turns and the actual lever mechanism moves back and forth on in the middle of the door, a roller each side which is attached to springs

It was a bit annoying losing the ceiling space, but I've only lost about 8" or so, and not all the way back.

It's better to lose that than risk losing the bikes of course!

Kryton, sounds like you have a different brand as mine has a toothed belt setup rather than a screw. Mine does say something about possibly re-calibrating the cycles every so often but it's been like 4 years and it's still ok so dunno.

I'd just give it check over every now and then. Ours broke, it's a the chain type pulling the double door up and the component which connects the door to the chain is plastic and that's worn to the point of not holding the door. FYI when it failed the door which is heavy came down hard.

We opted for one of these babies for the best of both worlds.

How much was that then? Bloke at the shop was not keen on roller doors security-wise, plus everything other than the base model Hormann sectional door was megabucks. Our door was £600 plus £200 for the opener.

Single or double? We paid a touch over 1k all in and fitted for a double.

Single.

That sounds like a good deal.

I would get some of the cheap clone remote controls off the web. We inherited a Seip door when we bought our house and the remote packed up, nearly £60 for a new one!

You do need to regrease the helix gear--I used to have one and, as I recall, the manual said to regrease every 6 months or so. ALso said to use a Lithium based grease. It comes in a small tube and you just lay a thin bead along the entire helix rod and open and close the door a time or two and it is done.
I also use a silicone spray on the roller axles and, if is a secioned door, on the hinges connecting the sections--do it about once every six months or so

So if i have this right

a) i need white lithium spray on 3-in-1 grease
b) don't spray the tracks?
c) spray the helix rod
d) spray the top of the rail if I have a "trolley"?
