Hi, im English and considering going green, for reasons that escape me right now.
im eligible and my sister is currently applying for one and will probably succeed. However, I've not bothered yet as im thinking what's the point of keeping a red passport if my family aren't eligible. Rather than contacting the relevant authorities I thought I'd lazily seek STW hive opinion - is there any reason for me to do it if my wife and kids can't? I don't travel in Europe with work so don't need to be an individual EU 'card carrier' at the moment.

Its not only about travelling in europe - depending on "the deal" the UK passport could be a lot less useful when going to a number of countries.

I think they can only get it if they have another substantive claim, i.e grandparents being born in Ireland and Irish citizens. OP would have to have been an Irish citizen before his kids were born for them to piggyback of his eligibility
1. Never call the country/island Eire.
2. You can call either Éire, but only ever in Irish.
If you can afford it go ahead and get it. The only downside I can see is that you would need to give it up for certain defence jobs.
Also, the rules can change on this stuff without much notice. It will likely get harder and more expensive if it changes.
