We've got a long weekend in Edinborough in March, we plan to visit the castle, royal mile etc, but is there anything that's particularly good for a toddler? Thanks

If the weather is good, the play park at the east end of the meadows is great, massive and loads of stuff to entertain. You could also head down to Portobello beach, even if the weather is terrible our wee one likes a run around down there.

If the weather is bad the museum of Scotland has some decent kids bits, along with all the normal museum stuff which may be interesting depending on what they like.

Take a wee ride on the tram that the locals love so much. The toddler will be free. I don't think the castle will be particularly pram friendly if you are still using it, but great views from the ramparts.

The National Museum is great and of course the zoo.

Royal Botanic Gardens is always good to let wee ones run around.

That's a good point, I'll take his rucksack carrier so I can stick him on my back for the steps up there - just need to remember he's there before walking through any low doorways!

Dynamic Earth can be good if it's an indoor day: http://www.dynamicearth.co.uk/

Take great care at Edinburgh Zoo. There used to be a lunatic there who went round flooring young children with a single mighty punch. He's not been heard of for a while but is believed to still lurk. He can be identified by his grey leather slip on shoes (the type that driving instructors are legally required to wear).

IMO the castle is overrated and often busy, but the views are great. I'd head straight for the Camera Obscura though, that's magic for kids,(up to and including in their 50's).
Dynamic Earth probably a good shout.
A hurl on the trams is worth a go
If you're going to the zoo (and it's pretty good), go to the web site and book a slot to see the pandas.

The zoo is great but surprisingly hilly.

Ours are older but declared the museum of scotland the best museum they had been to. I'm 45 and inclined to agree.

Yup - with little ones the best play is to get there early, get the little "train" to the top of the hill and spend your day working down the hill taking in whatever feeding times or talks you want to see along the way.

I'd leave off the castle entirely*. Its not a real castle its just a barracks with a wall. Its expensive and there are better views of edinburgh.

Camera obscura definitely
Botanics is alright but a bit bleak in winter
Porty beach is great for a run around
Yacht Britannia?
Deep Sea world?

I don't have a toddler but I a a massive child.

*I really mean this its crap if you can get the kid up narrow stairs I would suggest scotts monument.

Our kids love going to visit Grandma in edinburgh, and going to the National Musuem of Scotland. Fully awesome, nice wee cafes, hunners of things for kids to press and play with, and run about madly!

Think they stopped the zoo train ages ago. So it's hills agogo. Shouldn't put anyone off, we've got a family pass and the kids love it.

Zoo is OK, but yes it is built on the side of a bloody steep hill.
