Hello,
So.... I decided that I need some new winter walking boots, I knew what ones I needed and what size I needed. I had a quick look online, and found a pair used twice on eBay. They were on auction, so bid for them and won them at about £50 less than I could buy new. Ideal.
They arrived yesterday, they were supposed to be Scarpa Mantas... which are a very rigid winter specific boot, with a B2 crampon compatible sole, with a specific edge for the crampon to clip onto.
What arrived was a well used pair of Scarpa ZG10s. These are a good 3 season walking boot, but only compatible with a B0 crampon in an emergency, and far cheaper to buy - sub £100 if you look about online.
So.... I emailled the guy, stating the issue, and all the facts. He replied denying that they were the wrong boots or worn more than twice- although conceeding that they had been worn twice by his dad and once by him.
So... I took photos of the boots, and found links to good photos of the Mantas and the ZG10s and did a line by line comparison of the boot and all the issues that mean the ones he sold me are not Mantas. IT's pretty clear from the photos, actually obvious.
Still, he remains adamant they are Mantas, and he has a receipt.
My response to that is I could just as well post a brick in a box and give him a receipt for a £300 pair of boots, that does not make them connected in any way.
I've raised a case in eBay to resolve this. He does have on his profile, No returns accepted... this can't be applicable where the wrong item has been sent, can it? Surely that's fraud?
Anyone got any advice, other than getting a mob together and burning his face off?

Pictures so we can see the difference 😉
[pics now added, ta 😉 ]
Oh, I've also contacted the Scarpa distributor to confirm the boot I have. Anyone else than can confirm these are ZG10s would be great.
Ebay will say to return I imagine - not sure about postage costs.
Is was you received as shown on the ebay listing?
Saying he doesn't accept returns means nothing if the item is not as described.
Normally you'll end up paying the return postage though. If you return, make sure it's signed for. 🙁
Yes, but the image was taken from the top, so they look incredibly similar to Mantas. You can't actually see the difference in the photo to know they're not Mantas. Hence my suspicion the seller knew the case, and is pulling a fast one.
Whoo! Check this email out just from ebay (the power of STW?), now that is customer service:
Thanks for contacting eBay about the Scarpa Manta that you recently purchased. I reviewed your email, and I understand that you received an item not as described. I know it can be disappointing when the boot arrives and its not the one you expected, as you purchase it.. No worries, I’ll be glad to help you with this one.
When you receive the wrong item, or it doesn't match the seller's description, you're required to pay for its return shipping. I hope you can understand that in order for us to hold the seller accountable and issue a refund, we need to make sure that the item is returned to the seller.
upon reviewing your case, I noticed that you have been with eBay for almost 9 years. That’s good. We really appreciate members like you. Good luck on your future transactions.
Please complete these steps in the next 10 days to receive your refund:
1. Go to the Resolution Center and get the seller's return address from the "Case details" page:
http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com
2. Ship the item back to the seller using tracking information, so we can confirm that the seller received the item. You can use the shipping company of your choice.
3. Return to the Resolution Center and enter the tracking number from the package. After you enter the tracking information, you'll see another page where you'll be asked to confirm that the tracking information is correct. Be sure to click the "Submit" button--otherwise we won't receive your information. You must enter the tracking information in order to receive a refund.
Once we have confirmation that the item has been delivered, we'll issue you a refund within 3 days for the cost of the item plus original shipping (as long as the seller hasn't already issued you a refund).
Thank you once again in helping create a good environment for transacting here at eBay.
Sincerely,
eBay Customer Support
They are ZG 10's
No doubt about it.
I have a pair sat here and they are identical.
(Did you not see the pictures on the eBay listing and realise what they were ?)
Nope, the photo is really ambigious, they could easily be Mantas in the photo. There were about 40 bids, so were obviously not easy to spot as ZG10s. And I suppose when you see stated on the ad that they are Mantas and crampon compatible, you're more inclined to see what you expect, rather than what you should suspect.
Happy though, just return postage to pay for.
Oh, the other issue is that they were advertised as worn twice, and the serial numbers on the tongue have worn away, they've been used that much - my missus' Mantas that are 8 years old still have the serial number on! The sole is well worn too.
Bonkers. I try my best to be totally open about everything I sell, and if I'm wrong I'll always accept things back.
Happy now.
He may have only worn them twice to be fair.
Once from December 2006 to march 2009
And once from November 2010 to October 2012.
🙂
It is possible that he was sold them as Mantas. I had a similar problem buying a set of Humvee 3/4s off here and they turned out to be Zymes. In that case, the seller was happy to refund me, despite him being told they were Humvees when he bought them. The good news is that he subsequently advertised them as Zymes, sold them immediately and I posted them on to the new buyer 🙂
I would have done the same, but the attitude form the seller was pretty poor, the best he offered was for me to send them back and he'd refund me the amount minus £12 for his time and his postage.
The at the end of the email I told me to sodding keep them, and let eBay sort it out.
12 quid for his time?
The second pic looks just like my Mantas, don't recognise the first pair, are they a new version of mantas? 😀
New shoes on the table, it can only end in tears!
He's relisted them now.... even though they've not arrived back from me yet. But he's still got them listed as Scarpa Manta M4s, even though they're obviously not.
He's caveated this with: "These boots are fully waterproof and will take a crampon although unsure which type so please do your own research on that one."
I doubt a lot of people will actually read that, but may get screwed over.
Why are some people so callous? Surely it's Xmas, and it's gonna ruin someone's day, and could put a downer on their Xmas if £150 to them really is a lot of money.
link and we could swamp him with Q's
Report it to ebay?

Report it to eBay as misrepresented goods.
He knows what they are now, so he's got no excuse.
Report it to ebay, defo. Mistakes happen, but this isn't a mistake any more.
report him to ebay? what a bender 😐
Find out where he lives + burn his house down = simple
Ps I am not being serious ...obviously!
but this isn't a mistake any more.
That's exactly how it sounded in my head
Have you sent the boots yet? If not, delay until after the new listing finishes
Asked him if he was a 100% sure they were Manta M4's
His reply was:
There is no way I can 100% as they were bought in 2009, I was told they were Manta M4's but it doesnt say any model on the boot themselves.
They are second hand and priced as such, I'm not after much more than £50.
Seems to have taken the hump on the ebay ad as well
IN ANSWER TO THE QUESTION "ARE THESE MANTA'S" TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE YES!!!! BUT OLD ONES, 2008 TO BE EXACT. THEY DO NOT SAY "MANTA" ON THEM I CAN ONLY GO ON WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD! SOME ARE ASKING ARE THESE ZG10'S IF THEY ARE I DONT KNOW. THESE WERE BOUGHT IN 2009 HENCE THE RESERVE IS SET AT ONLY £50. IF SOME PEOPLE ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY OVER £150 FOR A SECOND HAND PAIR OF BOOTS I CANT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. SO TO BE CLEAR TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE THEY ARE AN OLD MODEL MANTA BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE THIS PRINTED ANYWHERE, NOR DOES IT SAY "ZG10". THEY ARE HOWEVER A SECONDHAND PAIR OF SCARPA'S. IF YOU WANT THE LATEST NEWEST MODEL MANTA THEN BEST GO TO A SHOP.
😆
I thought I'd be helpful and ask if these were the boots sold as Manta's and then refunded as they were, in fact ZG10's? 🙂
Reported listing as fraudulent.
Let's see if ebay do anything.
Sellers like this really get my goat.

That email reads "SCAM!" left, right and centre. Did you click on the link or visit the resolution centre via "My eBay"?
Agree with Flaperon
Lol. Loving my thread.
Was a genuine message from eBay, was actually in eBay resolution centre, rather than an email. As soon as that was sent my case status was updated to return accepted. Or something similar.
I got an email back from, Scarpa... They're Scarpa Nepal boots. Proper old school. Although look identical to ZG10s so wonder if they're just rebranded as the Nepal.
Someone is gonna buy them for over £100 still. If in the condition he originally stated, which was worn twice, then that's not too bad. But the heel was well worn, as was the leather.
Boots posted back recorded already....
And fired an email to eBay as soon as I saw he'd relisted them.
ad been pulled now?

How would a scammer know that he had sent an email to EBay complaining about a pair of Scarpa Walking boots ? 😐
