Urban Angel down Hanover street is nice healthy food, nice place too.
Cafe Andaluz in George St does some damn fine Tapas
Ask Mark from thebikechain.
He took us to a chinese, the lady owner kept stealing our starters off the table, touching up Mark and myself, throwning lollypop at customers as they left.
Her finale was flashing her knickers at TJ and rubbing her legs suggestively.
Brilliant night, food was good too.
Heh that was funny. It was Karen Wongs on St Leonards Street-VERY traditional UK chinese food so think bright colours, hot towels etc. Nothing fancy but you really go to see her mentalry.
I would avoid the usual tourist based places like Royal Mile (although there are some great places there) and Hanover st etc.
The Outsider on George the 4th Bridge is good. Do you like Thai-try Thai Orchid up nr the castle. Vin Cafe is good too for italian etc.
Loads of places around so just pick some well rvwd ones and you can't go too far wrong.
A good curry can be had in The Guru not 5 mins from where you are staying-Dundee Terrace.
Have fun!
Chop Chop at Haymarket is good Chinese food done differently. Second the Guru, not been for a while but always used to be excellent, especially the naan.
You should try Hanedans nr my gaff. Best service and cleanest place I have ever been in including Wisharts, Witchery etc.
Small menu-all freshly cooked and super tasty. The owner chef dude cooks in full view and is super nice. Any special requests-just ask. Very obliging.
In fact-all burgh types... Go and visit.

Didn't have you down as a new town old schhol type Scott. Too much money obviously! ๐
Hahaha... the old boy was paying!! ๐
Does he want to take me out too.
You around at xmas btw? Thinking of xmas day ride in the morn just after santa has been.
Sorry to hijack Stumpy! ๐ณ
Was gonna email you 2moro dude. Thinking GT on the 23rd then a boxing day ride soemwhere.
Oh aye sorry!
My good mate kiwi Gary work at cafe Andaluz as a chef. He is very anal about his work and its a great place.
He used to work at some Sheraton place in London.
Give it a go. Seems well priced too.
For a lunch or (very) informal dinner, try Under the stairs, a wee basement bar and restaurant between the grassmarket and Greyfriars bobby. Intimate, good tunes and good food, some cracking cocktails too... Merchant street, opposite some Australian bar I think.
Unfortunatly most of the best laces will be fully booked by now Loads of great restaurants around where I am ( Leith). Unfortunatly I have not been to any for a while.
The shore bar, Fishers, the Kings Wark are 3
Chop Chop was on Gordon Ramsey's best of British (Chinese cuisine) wasn't it? The dumplings there did look brill. Have been to Fishers and the shore in Leith, both were very good.
Had the best main course of my life in Petit Paris, 'grilled salmon with lemon & chive butter' - doesn't sound much, but I wont forget that one; simply perfection. Not that I've much experience in the field.
Thanks to all for the suggestions .. i`ll look into them closer tomorrow ... has anyone tried jimmy chungs chinese buffet ?
only asking as we do like a nice chinese buffet .
Thanks again Tony
Is there such a thing as a nice chinese buffet?
Jimmy chungs is as you would expect it to be. Its ok.

As it happens .. yes there are quite a few nice ones in birmingham .
Jimmy Chungs is shit. I'd rather eat a box of carpet tacks and a tub of laxative than go there.
Maybe they are in Brum only then cause the ones we have are pants! ๐
Will check them out in March when we go to the Outdoor show again.

any other buffet style places up there then ?
The Xmas Market is on in Princes St Gardens. (just in from them)

Sounds similar to the frankfurt christmas market they have on in brum at this time of year
Yeah same kind of gig, though there are some Scottish stalls too: Aberdeen Angus burgers, venison, haggis in a roll, honey mead. All good and a nice atmosphere. Wrap up tho it's chuffin freezing.
I'm not really a fan of Chinese food but jimmy chungs has nothing to recommend it. I like
la garrigue - good SE French cooking but not cheap
a room in the town - good Scottish cooking and byo so usually works out well (a room in the west end is also good)
buffalo grill in Stockbridge and causewayside are good for steak
ghandis on East Fountainbridge is best Indian I have been to in Edinburgh but not outstanding by Yorkshire standards
Italian - centotre in George st is good, also pizza express - generic but it's hard to fault really
ecco vino on cockburn street is also excellent, small menu, reasonably priced and great location.
If you want to go somewhere great but not pay the earth, lunch menus are good. Harvey Nichols 4th floor and Hotel du Vin would gte the nod for that.
Edit: Outsider also very good
Pizza express is awful. Factory made pizza and yucky salads. Revolting. Try Gulianos if you want a decent pizza
Chinese buffet will always be awful - chinese food needs to be cooked to order. Rice kept warm is the best wasy to culture ffod posening possible.
If you're in the mood to push the boat out then The Scottish Whisky Society dining room on Queen St is outstanding - I've eaten at all the good places mentioned so far and I'd pretty much always choose to go to the Whisky soc. Even if you and the missus aren't into whisky it's still a great meal. If you do appreciate a dram, though, there's no competition ๐
Expensive though, and the one on Queen St is fairly small, so can get full pretty quick.
Ping On was my favourite Chinese when I lived there many years ago. It was down in Leith somewhere I think but I'm not sure if it's still there.
i went to the MWS once and fair play we were eating off the bar menu BUT the chips were undercooked and inedible. Not good enough really. Chips are not hard to make.
Ping On is (now?) in Stockbridge, & they're pretty good right enough.
For something more traditional, Jackson's on the Royal mile is pretty good, but not cheap. Edinburgh is my favourite city, beautiful, you should have a great time, although Princes street was full of road works a couple of weeks ago. Monster mash is great for a big stodgy lunch.
A good curry can be had in The Guru not 5 mins from where you are staying-Dundee Terrace.
i used to live 2 doors down from that
man did we eat a lot of curry
Princes street was full of road works a couple of weeks ago.
Aye the tram works! (Edinburgh's second folly).
Pretty much gone from Princes Street now though, as they need it clear for Hogmanay.
micheal - its a little know scientific fact that they make the biggest nann breds in all of the UK, they use a surfboard mould as the tandoori oven!
ah the table naans, size of a dustbin lid, only once have i managed to finish a full 2 courses in there
Get yourself down to the Shore for the best Italian in [s]Edinburgh[/s] Scotland

I had an excellent meal at Celadon the other weekend.
Top class Thai nosh - highly recommended.
My good mate kiwi Gary work at cafe Andaluz as a chef. He is very anal about his work
Just lost my appetite ๐
I eat out a bit - always looking for value and nice/interesting food rather than glitz.
Current favourites are the Dogs (not done Dogs Amore) on Hanover St - lovely hearty rustic food at decent prices & v. casual, and Roseleaf in Leith - similar.
i had great nachos in the Black Rose last night ๐
