Following a break in at the pub down the road (in Ramsbottom), the police informed us that there has been a massive increase in incidents of outbuildings being broken into, and their contents 'liberated'. Sheds and garages are all fair game at the moment apparently

In entirely unrelated news, a huge encampment of [s]pikeys [/s] charming romany travelling folk have just moved into the area (Accrington).

As the copper pointed out, there isn't a hint of suspicion the two incidents are in any way connected.

So if you 're in East Lancs, you may want to make sure your sheds and garages are secure. And its worth putting an extra lock on the bikes. And maybe buying a rabid Alsatian. Or a gun

Let me be the first to call you a shameful alsatianist.

Some of my best friends are alsatians, and they aren't the least bit rabid.

I've no idea why the Charming Romany Travelling Folk get such a bad name. They're just carrying on their centuries-old traditions, not harming anyone...etc

Over here in West Lancs had a "outbreak" of shed & outbuilding break-in's last Feb.I've now got a battery operated alarm from Maplins, they're pretty cheap, might be worth investing in one.

Bizarrely - the sudden spate of similar thefts we were suffering from seems to have - just as suddenly abated.
Another weird thing is that during this mini crime wave we seemed to have been people using the local park to shit in

Used to be at my old office that as soon as the travellers turned up, the local thieves went on a frenzy and half the companies on the industrial state started on the insurance jobs, on the assumption that everyone'll blame the pikies. Tons of local arrests. So connected, aye, but not quite like we thought!

Why on earth would local thieves be remotely interested in upping their production?

OOH i have two replies here
1.

As the copper pointed out, there isn't a hint of suspicion the two incidents are in any way connected

Why cant the copper not do what they did in the old days when they had no evidence and just fabricate it or beat a confession out of them? Was it one of the nice policeman who blamed liverpool fans for Hillsborough? Perhaps one of the ones who failed to investigate the Lawrence murder effectively? Perhaps one of the ones more likely to stop black people in nice cars or on the streets as that is obviously suspicious too?
Perhaps he was just one of the rubbish ones who knew who was doing crimes but lacked the brain power or skill set to catch them or bring them to justice....anyway I can why you listened to them given they could not prove what they were saying or have any evidence that they could present to a court
2.
yes lets all jump to racially motivated conclusions with only flimsy evidence - TBH i am being kind calling that evidence.
its good to know on STW that you cant hate gays or other minorities but you can still call travellers names like pikey and assume that all thefts are related to them.

Ah the modern world its lovely *

* i mean it is a knee jerk daily wail type manner of frothing outrage....except of course we blame our own special brand of "immigrants" the travellers.
GAWD BLESS YOU ALL

It appears I've already answered this one:

on the assumption that everyone'll blame the pikies.

We had a diesel tank drained- "Must be the pikies", eventually a local was arrested. Company behind reported they'd been robbed, "Must be the pikies", oh no actually their director was arrested for insurance fraud. Loads of car break-ins- all the ones I know of turned out to be local.

Well,

I've just wrapped up the bikes in a motorbike chain. I'm sure I've nothing to worry about though, in which case, there's nothing to worry about.

Been told today that the police are 'warning' that there is a 'traveller' funeral in Rochdale. Even saw signs of a large number of caravans and white transits congregating on the Kingsway industrial estate.

Not saying anything will happen, but the police have mentioned it.

Just keep a look out for a van(s) driving slowly around your area. Yes it could be workman looking for their job. However I've seen the odd one basically coasting around looking for 'options'. Note the reg and call in.

I live in County Durham which i believe is a mecca for the travelling community.
My insurance on the car has gone down and in the row of houses where i live a garage was broken into over Christmas, the first such thing in over 20 years.
There are a lot of pick ups and vans about with 3 "fellas" sat in the front, with none of the vehicles having a company name.
The travellers have plenty of cash and around here have bought smallholdings and some quite expensive, for County Durham, properties.
Talking to neighbours its a council estate in the next village which houses feral families thats a problem, not travellers.

Visit Huddersfield, decades of unchecked DSS-dependent breeding has created huge numbers of underclass. Not helped by the fact that large swathes (parts of) Hudds have estate after estate covering big areas.
