sometimes you do have to take your hat off to Putins trolling abilities
Trolling the most pro-russian US president he is ever likely to have to deal with wouldn't be Putin's smartest move.
Why not? He knows that he can do whatever the hell he likes and Trump won’t do a thing.
Especially when he knows Trumps goldfish-like attention span is focussed purely on having a childish social media spat with his former mate
Ah, you're pushing the "Trump is Putin's bitch" line. Okay
Astounding statement from Trump which could backfire if countries bombed by the US have the green light to retaliate.
Ah, you're pushing the "Trump is Putin's bitch" line. Okay
Erm… and the evidence that he isn’t? This maybe…
So you think obvious evidence that Trump is quite pro-Putin proves that he is Putin's bitch and that he can't possibly change his attitude towards him? That's quite a leap of logic.
On another echo chamber that I frequent Trump is Netanyahu's bitch.
The Idea that easily the most powerful man on Earth should be any other country's bitch doesn't make a lot of logical sense, but I can see the attraction of simple explanations that don't require too much thinking 😉

Is he the most powerful man in the world or is he a weak willed easily influenced man who happens to be in a job which potentially holds the reins of power?

You're trying to apply logic and rational decision-making to Trump? That’s certainly an interesting concept. How’s that working out so far? Any other examples spring to mind of this world-renowned ‘logic’ that he’s famed for?
Is he the most powerful man in the world or
Of course he is the most powerful man in the world, until he ceases to US president.
No other person approaches that level of political, economic, and military, power.

No I'm not trying to "apply logic and rational decision-making to Trump", it's obvious that I am not.
I am trying to apply logic to the suggestion that the leader of another much weaker country "can do whatever the hell he likes and Trump won’t do a thing". I can't see any.

Well, Trump seems to have Putin and Netanyahu well under control, and not the other way round.

Xi is in the same league.
Well, Trump seems to have Putin and Netanyahu well under control
I would be interested to see the reasoning behind that statement.
None of them really seem to have the others under control. It mostly seems to be the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact reenacted waiting to end in tears.
Xi is in the same league
Certainly China is the only country which can seriously challenge US hegemony in any meaningful way, something which despite apparently being a complete idiot Trump seems to have very well identified. Hence his impatience with sorting out the Middle East/Europe so that he can focus everything on the real threat to the US - China.
But despite its inevitable advances China is still not in quite the same superpower league as the United States. And I would very much doubt that Xi can weald the same level of personal power as the President of the United States.
Well, Trump seems to have Putin and Netanyahu well under control, and not the other way round.
No he clearly doesn't have them "well under control" , it was obvious that you were taking the piss.
But what is also taking the piss is the suggestion that they couldn't care less what the president of the United States says or thinks. Of course they do.

Yeah, I bet they’re both really losing sleep over what their ultimate useful idiot is going to do to sanction them for their continued atrocities.
They know full well exactly what he’ll do. Just what he’s done so far…
Absolutely nothing
… unless you count his pathetic inaction as giving them the nod to just carry on doing what they’re doing, without fear of any sanction whatsoever
What is the point of occupying the most powerful office in the world if it’s just a reality TV show or social media platform that doesn’t bother with the serious stuff because it’s too much like hard work and is instead totally preoccupied with personality politics bullshit?
Apparently his juvenile spat with musk is far more important than all the dead in Ukraine and Gaza.
Sending National Guard to LA - incendiary tactic. Gives MAGA something to talk about other than Musk too.

This is the start of the tipping point. Protests that turn violent give him the chance to start talking about enemies within, challenging the power of the elected President, threat to democracy, sending in the National Guard, state of emergency, cancelling the midterms.
Is the bleak scenario. There's several points along that road where it could not go that far, obviously.

Okay so Donald Trump isn't a great US president, the idea that this somehow proves that Putin doesn't care what Trump says and does is simply daft.
Right now Putin has the most compliant and sympathetic US president he has ever had to deal with, what would be the sense to deliberately and unnecessarily piss him off and make life difficult for himself?
Hang on, I think that I might know the answer to this. Is it the same one as the one which explains the behaviour of all politicians (and voters) who you disagree with....... Putin is a complete idiot? 🙂

Xi is in the same league.
President Xi had been having problems with the slowing economy and his policies were blamed by some.
President Trump came along and imposed tariffs that were high enough to be called "anti-Chinese". China then coalesced behind Xi, but their economic problems haven't gone away
China is working to extend foreign aid to capitalise on the withdrawal of USAID and will fill that vacuum. The US isn't competing
Could be an interesting escalation in state vs federal government. California actually has a tax surplus (pays more to the Fed than it receives back) and is one of the larger overall contributors to the US economy.

It probably wouldn't make it through the courts but, strung out like Don has being doing, could still have a significant impact.

Yep, pity Biden didn't send in the nation guard on January 6th and instantly arrest the agent provocateur.

Iirc, in the movie "Civil War" it was California that was one of the rebel states. As was Florida, which was a bit of a plot hole 🕳

Probably keeps you out of prison and look at grifting that he’s been able to do and people give you ‘free’ Airplanes.
I do wonder if this is making more money than his actual business empire ever did.

No one is saying that except you.
Trump made a big thing about ending the Ukraine war in 24 hours. He failed. He's threatened both Ukraine and Russia with forms of sanctions and penalties if they didn't go along with Trump's plan, Putin has totally ignored him, totally undermining a very public Trump pledge, and I suspect, pissing Trump right off.
Can you explain how - based on these facts - you feel that Putin is trying to avoid pissing off the most powerful man in the world, because it genuinely doesn't compute for me.
because it’s too much like hard work
I am no Trump fan. In fact the day the slimy piece of shit dies will be a very very happy one for me....
But......credit where credit is due....he'll be 79 this week coming, and by christ it looks hard work for a 79 year old. Just the time spent on social media, the press conferences, meeting world leaders in his own gaff, some travel to do the same in foreign lands....I'm not saying he's any good at it, or what he is doing has any positive impact whatsoever; but I doubt there are many 79 year olds that have got the stamina to smear quite so much turgid shit as this arsehole - you've got to give him that much.
Here's hoping it catches up with him some day soon and he has in own Elvis on the bog moment on Air force 1 - maybe on the new shiny grifted one with a gold plated lav.
Just caught up with the LA news, the governor is not happy at Trump deploying the National Guard
Could be a movie though.
Unintended(?) consequences - Proud Boys seek state funding

Yeah this was completely inevitable, and the administration has absolutely invited it with their decision to give $5m to the family of Ashley Babbitt as a reward for raising a dead terrorist. A really clear signal that insurrection isn't just allowed (which is all the pardons could do) but will be rewarded. Straight out of the Hamas playbook, but it works.

If you think that Putin doesn't care about what the United States President says or does, if you think that Putin doesn't see the value of having a very pro-russian president currently in the White House, then that's up to you.
I disagree, I believe that Trump could make things easier or harder for Putin depending on how he feels.
And if you are going to ask me a question like this :
Can you explain how - based on these facts - you feel that Putin is trying to avoid pissing off the most powerful man in the world, because it genuinely doesn't compute
Then perhaps read what I actually wrote ? This is what I said :
Trolling the most pro-russian US president he is ever likely to have to deal with wouldn't be Putin's smartest move.
Where is the bit where I am claiming that "Putin is trying to avoid pissing off the most powerful man in the world"?
I am suggesting that Putin must clearly understand the value of having such a pro-russian US president, and pissing Trump off by talking of granting Elon Musk political asylum doesn't sound particularly sensible. If Putin is indeed behind the latest claims.
Is someone going to point out to the orange cretin that staging a 'border incident' is meant to involve another country?
All this provocation then suppresion of internal dissidents is very Stalin-esque.
Where is the bit where I am claiming that "Putin is trying to avoid pissing off the most powerful man in the world"?
I thought that was what you meant when you said:
what would be the sense to deliberately and unnecessarily piss him off and make life difficult for himself?
But I'm obviously wrong again
A "border incident" in the context of certain presidential emergency powers is with regards to a state's inability to control illegal movement over a United States border.
Trump's administration is claiming that California has failed to control illegal movement over a United States border, as I understand it.

I meant "what would be the sense?" I am not making any claims concerning whether Putin is deliberately and unnecessarily trying to piss Trump off.
I am simply pointing out that doing so isn't likely to do Putin any favours. So the offering Musk political asylum stunt makes no sense.
Since you apparently disagree perhaps you can explain what advantages Putin is likely to gain by unnecessarily winding up Trump?

He can continue to batter Ukraine and try and steal more land just in case there's a ceasefire. It's not just what he gains, it's that he has nothing to lose/faces no consequences if he does.
I was using the term 'border incident' as a euphemism for concocting a conflagration out of basically nothing.
Like Trump's forebear did with Poland.
It's not just what he gains, it's that he has nothing to lose/faces no consequences if he does.
Some would beg to differ
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/politics/2025/06/06/white-house-tries-water-down-russia-sanctions/
It seems to me that winding up Trump unnecessarily could have negative consequences for Putin. Although you are obviously free to think otherwise.
Trumps been bloody quick getting the national guard in hasnt he?
Obviously the protests are great news for him and his base. I can see some poor sod getting shot all so that lunatic gets to look like the strongman.

Hardly a new tactic for megalomaniac shits.
This kind of thing is ten a penny for the tinpot dictators of 3rd world countries in the 60s and 70s. Which is what Trump basically is.
