Can’t blame it all on Trump then. Phew

No, but it certainly doesn't help that Trump is actively cheering them on!

Something you notice with his daily briefings is there's no 'standing agenda' - his experts don't present a consistent set of stats so you can track progress. This is why I like Cuomo's approach.

We had charts of deaths/thousand population this week (with Trump throwing around accusations about other's numbers). Yesterday both he and Birx stated the US had the lowest mortality (rate?) in the world. No idea how they've decided that.

This is what you get when you indulge your inner asshole and elect an asshole as President in the hope that he'll be an asshole, but only in the way you specifically want.

At least they didn't make their 'national assholery' moment something that can't be reversed after four years. I mean, who'd be stupid enough to do that....🙄

there were some rioting in Paris (when isn’t there 😉 ) and protests in Brazil

The rioting in the often rioty part of Paris was because a chav got hurt trying to force a motoX bike through a roadblock without a helmet and the rumour spread that he was car-doored by the police.

The disenfranchised youth of the Parisian suburbs love a bit of outrage just as much as good ole gun totin' patriotic muricuns.

I believe the technique they used is to quote the absolute numbers when talking about how America has "tested more than anywhere else", but switch to per-capita numbers when talking about how low their mortality rate is.

🙄

To be honest, I have some sympathy with the American public rebelling against the restrictions.

The problem (as I see it) is that America lacks things we in the UK take for granted like basic employment rights, socialised healthcare, and a working benefits system.

When most of us get restricted and/or furloughed then we have those things to fall back on.

In America, you just get the sack, a one-off $1200 cheque from the government and a kick up the arse.

Watch those weekly US unemployment figures compared to other great rises:

But it's nonsense anyway, accepting they switch to per-capita as it suits them (which I hate - glad our lot don't do that). Just surprised the WH press let something like that go unchallenged.

The land of Dreams, or should that be Nightmares

18th Century mantra:

"Go West my boy, go west".

21st Century addendum:

"Then when you get to the sea, build yourself a boat and keep on going".

And just to note, Belgium looks terrible there because of the way we report.  Belgium is including all deaths from care homes (about 52% of the total) if it is likely it was due to CV19 rather than confirmed.  All hospital deaths are confirmed but only 4% of care home deaths are confirmed at the moment.  No-one else is using that method.

Numbers are all in the detail 🙁

If only they didn't live in such a poor country.

I suspect that a greater reason they are rebelling against restrictions is because many Americans are brought up mistrusting, and even hating, their own government. It's a cultural thing.

Here in the UK we are a long way from that but we have certainly moved in that direction in recent times.

Numbers are all in the detail

But not enough people (particularly if they actively don't want to) question the numbers, their relation to each other and how they are being used.

Much easier to bang on about Mexican rapists and building walls or Chinese viruses, because that's what your average knuckledragger responds to.

Because they can't admit there is anything wrong with their system (to themselves or anyone else).

Government help, benefits, employment rights, heathcare? That's socialism son! Are you some kinda commie?

Instead it is much better to protest about their liberty (or "libety") to work and die without no guv'mint interference.

Re those numbers above, it's also worth pointing out that because different countries have different policies on testing, the numbers of deaths v number of infections can be skewed. For instance both Germany and US have been doing a lot more testing than the UK for example (absolute numbers). This means that they will identify and confirm a lot more cases (particularly asymptomatic or low symptom) that will pass under the radar in other countries. Which will in turn make their deaths to infection ratio look better. As has been said, the numbers are only a small part of the overall story, context is everything.

I should add that by picking Germany, I'm sot saying that a combination of their better response and superior healthcare isn't a genuine factor, just that the numbers need to be understood in context. Same as us (scandalously) not including care home deaths in our figures. Though that's far from the only thing that is scandalous regarding our response as is becoming clearer by the day..

I view it as (sad) reality rather than a scandal. There must be over 20,000 care homes in the UK, and a doctor has to visit, complete the MCCD which then is reported back. ONS is passing the info, just not in real-time.

Back to Trump...

Only going off what is in the main thread, but it’s the WHO who are saying to only use hospital deaths in the figures, so comparisons can be made more effectively.

Not really scandalous.

Belgium are, and including people who they believe died due to CV19 even if not tested.  That's why their numbers are so high.  Almost 50% of the death rate aren't tested positive, there is just a strong indication that it is correct

Looks like he's also pressurising the head of the CDC to wind-back his recent comments that he was concerned about a second wave coinciding with the flu season. He did the same thing with Fauci and his suggestion there was push-back to lockdown.

As much as were all terified that Trump will start WW3, the international body count has been pretty low under this administration. Trump employs big childish gestures, like the mother of all bombs in Afghanistan, the fairly comprehensive strike on the Syrian airbase deemed responsible for chemical weapons strikes and the execution of Sulemani.

He doesn't go in for endless drone strikes and internecine accumalative tit for tats in line with the excepted international protocols.

Iran plays chess whilst Trump plays chequers.

Stupidly got watching his latest covid presser last night before bed - He makes my skin itch at the best if times but he really wound me up and kept me awake.

Standing there lording it over the Dr he claims was misquoted in rightly saying Covid+Flu next winter would be a disaster.

The other female very intelligently stated the situation and then couldn't wait to get off the stand as Trump twisted what she was saying into downplaying what a second wave may look like. No sense of sadness, empathy for people who have died or may die. Just grandiose BS about how "He" scaled up ventilator manufacturing and the press should be thanking "him".

Never said this about another human being but I wouldn't be upset for one of his disease "embers" to set up camp in his household.

Who's behind the Reopen Protests?

Its maybe not an accident that the Whitehouse is legislating one way and Trump is encouraging people to protest another. People from his own team are bankrolling the protestors and paying their bail.

Trump forcing the CDC Head to take-back his comments was as ridiculous to watch as when Fauci had to do the same after Easter (when Fauci said 'there was a lot of pushback about shutting things down back then' and then said it was 'the wrong choice of words'.)

It was as bizarre as usual, I think they concluded the Washington Post article was accurate, but there was one word in the headline they didn't like? Then Trump dismissed any concerns of a second wave this winter, only for Birx and Fauci to say it was almost a given and we needed to prepare for it.

And what's this bolx he keeps saying that the US has done more tests than the rest of the World combined? Just looked at worldometer...

USA tests 4,326,648, Rest of the World 19,383,441

Touting uv lamps & sun beds whilst intravenously injecting disinfectant could be a cure?, I expect a reasonable amount of his blind faith acolytes will pick up on that and embalm themselves with TCP (for my bumhole) whilst frying to an orange crisp under uv lamps that will directly cause dna damage and weaken the immune system leading to an inflammatory cytokine response, then death (probably)

Sounds like a fair result, go for it trumpers

And in case anyone here was still insufficiently cynical, Fox News's spin is that actually this is something Trump got right before anyone else even thought of it- when he said earlier that the summer would see corona decline, he meant because there's sunshine in summer and sunshine kills the virus.

As much as I dislike the man, Trump is on and entirely other level of incompetence. Boris is the knob from the party you don't like the policies of with a reputation for being light on details and a bit lazy for a national leader. Trump is genuinely dangerous at a global level. Boris I'd enjoy giving a slap in the chops but I suspect could share a cuppa with in relative jovial harmony despite myself; Trump I would be compelled to take one for the team and slit the throat of if given half a chance.

the gaslighting by trump supporters on the daily fail comments is off the charts!

I watched it. The whole thing was about the virus dying at certain temperatures, Sunlight is the best disinfection, get oudoors etc etc That's pretty much what he said. If you don't see that, well I guess the DM told you how to think.

He didn't say that - what he did say was that he bets the media reports he said it!!!

TDS Remoaner Brits ........ idiots. Trump should Bow to the DM and it's TDS Sycophants. It and them know everything.

That is not at all what he said. DM openly promoting disinformation and you swallowed it, again!

More dangerous are idiots like you who believe everything MSM writes about Trump.

SICK OF DM LIES IN THEIR HEADLINES!!!

Could it BE any more obvious that S 0 R 0 S bought the DM? What a filthy, cheap lying rag this joke of a 'newspaper' has become...and it wasn't that great to begin with! LOL

They were speaking about cleaning surfaces, bleach (takes 30 minutes to ki.ll the virus) vs 97% rubbing alcohol which takes a minute. It was very clear when the reporter dramatically asked the question that he was setting up a sound bite. They need to give their addicted and easily man.i.pulated faithful their daily dose of outrage. If you watched that press conference and think this report is true, then there's no hope for you. Sorry. Even a 5 year old could understand the context was surfaces. My lord and people upvote lies and downvote truth! It's disgusting! I wish these reporters and news outlets could be sued.

Semantics, word play, context, emphasis, misinterpretation . Idiots.

He asked the doctor if it was possible disinfect lungs through some form of injection. Is he not allowed to ask?

just a few responses to the first post

I've just woken up and honestly thought I must have nodded off on the sofa and dreamt this. But I didn't.

Out of interest, they do use UV-C lamps in China to disinfect buses, hospital floors and money.

“You would literally be frying people,” says Dan Arnold, laughing in disbelief.'

Almost as unbelievable is that Dr Brix didn't just get up and walk out at that point at the least, if not actually stand up and point out that injecting yourself with IPA or disinfectant is likely to kill you. Leaving it out there for others to refute creates the chance for the 'that's not what he said' and Fox News responses. Kill it there, while the words are still coming out of his mouth, FFS.

He's basically saying, nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Almost as unbelievable is that Dr Brix didn’t just get up and walk out at that point

This. I know that whatever comes out of the mouth of Trump is pretty much his own problem, but when is one of the the "Adults in the Room" as one republican insider styled themselves, going to stand up to the Moron-in-Chief and actually say "Don't say that you idiot, some-one is now going to try to inject themselves with bleach, because you've just told them it's OK"

Sort of makes them look complicit

It’ll be those who shun regular vaccine injections who’ll be believing this

She had a brilliant look of half bemusement/half disdain on her face and didn’t say anything for a couple of seconds.

She looked to me like she was thinking hard "Hmm, how can we do this to please the President?"

I don't think some people appreciate the sycophancy of Trump's advisors. It's why he picked em!

DezB, I think what you are quoting was describing Naga, not the advisor.

Besides, he’s not wrong. Injecting yourself with disinfectant will kill the virus. By killing the host.
