I see Mr Mascara is talking about the Civilisational Decline’ in the UK. That’s a bit rich coming from a country who’s leader spends half his time falling asleep and the other half talking gibberish about stuff he wants to name after himself
Vance, Musk and the rest of them are doing this all over Europe. Their support for the AfD tells you all you need to know.

Shame we can’t muster an excuse and a will to fire all the ****ers (including tech bros) into the sun, I’d raise a glass and a smile to that
Thankfully, the only result of their interference seems to be the kiss of electoral death to those being endorsed.
Who the hell wants to be bigged up by Grandpa Simpson, in between his Oval Office naps and some insane ketamine guzzler?
They cost Orban his re-election in Hungary, even the Italian regime is distancing itself and their endorsement of the truly fascist Rupert Lowe is about to split the right wing vote here.
They’re not a bright bunch, are they? But I’m more than happy to see them carry on with their reverse Midas touch
Starmer should have been a lot less diplomatic, something like...
"I don't feel we need to take advice from the vice president of a country that has suffered (x) number of mass shootings and (y) number of murdered children and young people so far this year."
First and foremost the wishes of the family should be remembered and the response was suitably considered and to the point.
We do not need to be creating more division and trying to points score like some argument down the pub.

Going to be tricky whilst the world cup is on. Is that cheering because some team is scored/won or the **** has died?

Doesn't the US have slander / defamation laws?
It does, but I think the way they are defined is different to the way the UK has defined them, so it is harder to sue (I could be wrong here, it's only something I remember vaguely from Private Eye)

Iirc you have to prove intent in the US, which is why his BBC case is likely to fail. Would be nice if all the reporters he's yelled at launched a group action, I'd say the intent is there

I suspect that holding office compares to something like Parliamentary Privilege here in the UK. The Supreme Court of course conveyed a quite qualified immunity for presidents for 'official acts'. But given the whole machinery of government has been co-oped for the purpose of intimidation and exacting petty revenge it makes it quite difficult to separate personal opinion from government policy and define for any one statement whether Trump is acting in an official or personal capacity when he behaves in this way

Does the US public read the mainstream press.
I tend to tune in regularly to CNN and ABS's web pages to see the press are actually fact checking the President.
It's all fake news that Trump has said there is a deal with Iran just around the corner 37 times.
The whole point of Trumps ridiculous lawsuits is to intimidate and bully people into silence, so they cave and settle before anything ever reaches court. This then sends out a message to intimidate other news organisations about potential criticisms
It’s all just brinksmanship and bluster, but it works because organizations look at the potentially huge legal costs involved in fighting them and baulk at it.
If you want to see how his mindset works then watch the brilliant film about his early career and why he is like he is ‘The Apprentice’. The irony is that this film was never released in the US after Trump threatened all the distributors with multi-billion dollar lawsuits if they showed it

Its a mix.
For some people its simply being able to outspend them with appeal after appeal. Which is what he used in the past.
For several of his more recent cases it has been a way to extort money. Several media companies paid up since he could abuse his power to threaten them in other ways eg CBS settled since their owners Paramount needed the US gov to agree to a merger.
The Wall street journal on the other hand said nah and he folded. I would guess its likely to be the same with the BBC since they can ask for lots of embarrassing information as part of their defence.
There is a similar case with the Pulitzer prize committee who is also being sued by him for defamation and responded by asking for his financial and medical records. That was last in the news end of last year and has gone suspiciously quiet.
Does the US public read the mainstream press.
Yes and no. Yes in the sense any given American gets their news from somewhere, but no in two senses - the consumption of news is very fractured so theres no news organisation that has a large audience so theres not a shared news source, and also in the sense that most people understand whatever news source they consume to partisan , so even if they agree with the slant of their preferred outlet they actually have a low degree of trust in what they read or view to be the fullest version of the facts.
Fox is considered to be the dominant news source - its viewership tops out at around 2.5millon for its primetime shows (which in contexts is the same size of audience as 'Rob and Rylan's Passage to India) and sits around 200,000 at other times (equivalent to ITV in the mid afternoon) for a country with a population on nearly 350million. But thats not so much a sign of low engagement as one of there being so much choice. The rest of news consumption is fractured amongst various national and local broadcasters and publishers. In total people watch more local news than national, and they buy more local newspapers than national ones too. So theres very little shared experience, either with people on other parts of the partisan spectrum or even with people in other parts of the country.
That contrast with the UK where regardless of whether people are critical of it or not most get their news from the BBC and thats as much true of local news as it is of national and international news. Between 60 and 70% of the UK trust the BBC to be accurate broadly (compared to 7% for both ITV and Sky) and having that high percentage of audience means that even if the politics of the audience must vary quite widely they're all referencing the same version of events in maintaining those views.

I read recently that this is why the Trump lawsuit against the BBC has stalled. THe BBC have asked for thousands of documents from tax returns and all the documents that the Trump Trust that holds and owns all his business interests. They have been declared fair to request as the BBC wants to show no financial loss has been suffered which is one of Trumps key claims. I imagine reporters will have a field day with all these documents once they have been made public in court. Not surprisingly Trumps side arent keen on handing them over

The request for documents from the BBC was last month and Trump is currently trying to switch judges. I assume to try and find one who will reject the reasonable request that he prove the damage caused by releasing all the relevant financial information.
The Pulitzer one seems to have been on hold for about six months now with the only update being that one of the judges who originally ruled for Trump just happened to have been wanting a nomination from Trump to be a federal judge.
Bit awkward and so some questions about why he didnt disclose this are being asked.
And he's cancelled his strikes .......
Would seem he's got the best deal ever agreed by the best people, yet again.....
The biggliest, most beautiful deal ever! The Iranians don’t know anything about it yet, obviously.
Meanwhile Israel is still ignoring him and bombing the shit out of Lebanon, which means there won’t be any ‘deal’. Grandpa Simpson, in the meantime, also took time out to demonstrate that he has a similar grasp on economics as a gerbil
Bestest World Cup Ever, ever, has just OPENED in Mexico !
Bestest World Cup Ever,
Has anyone mentioned that FIFA rent spaces in some of Trump's properties. They don't use them - just pay rent.
Presumably a trick they learned from the Chinese government who've been doing the same thing.
^^ My grandsons got a goldfish that looks just like that, both in colour and mouth shape.
