Dogs aren't the problem - it's the owners. So you can either moan about dog shit/litter on an internet forum or be the change you want there to be and go do something about it.

The only thing I can think is that when you get a dog you must have to sign some agreement to stop giving a rats ass about anyone but yourself and also to defend all other dog owners even if they are clearly in the wrong.

Can you quote anyone doing that, let alone all dog owners?

I think we’ve established, beyond any reasonable doubt, that dog-owning, camping guitarists are worse than Hitler

My experience is vastly different to yours

Mine is dogs in kids play areas with no dogs signage, poop on the playing field, being chased and nipped when running in the park. Dare to politely challenge and you get abuse.

Dog hating threads are becoming boring

It's the owners not the dogs

How many times have you heard "he's never done that before"?

How many times does the owner scarper after their dog worries sheep, bites another dog in the street/park etc?

How many times that stick and flick is ok?

How many times do we just put up with the trail hound curling one out in the middle of the path?

OP, did you have a bell? If not, it's probably your fault. Silly, I know, but that's dog walkers logic.

I'm amazed at how many dog owners are able to see into the future... "he/she won't ever bite" Maybe/maybe not true but I'm not going to find out. I'll just pedal off faster than you and your dog who's now chasing me. No, I won't stop and find out if it will bite me. I'll just continue my ride while you look for your dog. #keep it on a lead.

What is it with dog owners adorning trees with little blue bags of shit?
I'd assumed it was to pick up on the way back out, so as to not lug a poo about for the walk.

Actually being as they seem to be there the next day perhaps it's a small brown offering to the gods of leaving crap behind.

We camp a lot with our dog and the last thing I'd be doing on a camp site is letting him off, even if there were no signs saying to keep him on a lead. Like you OP though, see it at almost every site we visit and I've never, ever seen it enforced.

So much this. Humans are kin animals!
They have the ability to consider their actions, but you know. Don't.

I have two dogs.

Things got better, but the huge rise in dog ownership and the social acceptability of not clearing up mean it’s now worse than it ever was

I don't think it's worse than it ever was - I can remember in the 70s and 80s there was sh!te all over the footpaths as well as the woods and grass areas. You couldn't ride your bike without collecting at least one. And I wouldn't say it's socially acceptable to not clear up after your dog, at least not round our way. If it is in your area then you really do have a problem, but I find it hard to believe that that really is the case.

Round here lots of people don't clear up after their dogs, to the point where I have to stop the kids running on the verges for the first 500m of a walk (dogs have normally emptied themselves by this point). It's pretty disgusting.

If people you know have dogs and make excuses for not clearing up then you need to hold them accountable, same for people you see in public not clearing up. We sometimes walk with friends who don't clear up after their dogs, when they stroll past their dogs business I offer them a bag and tell them to pick it up. I'd also do the same to a stranger but oddly enough never see a stranger doing that - which is why I don't think it's socially acceptable.

End of the day, people will be people and there's little you can do about it so it's really not worth getting up tight. That said, if you see it happening and don't pull people up then you have no real right to complain. Moaning after the fact on the internet won't do any good.

Genuinely think there is a kind of Dunning Kruger style effect whereby dog owners consistently see their own dog as being much more of a 'good dog' than the reality.

Though it is very noticeable round here (Arnside) that most people are 'proper' long time dog owners who take their responsibilities seriously (and probs have the time/resources to do so). My experience elsewhere is very much different.

Oh yes, I hate dogs and the dicks that own them.

We camp with our dogs and not a chance I'd let them off the lead (unless zipped up with us on a night). They'd be straight in to everyone else's tents to see what food was lying around!
We were away the other week and their was the typical fat, old bloke with an aversion to wearing a top with black lab never on a lead. Kept on wandering over to our pitch and around the windbreak winding our dogs up. Heard him shout over to someone else at one point "he won't hurt you". I was just psyching myself up to go and have a polite word and the torrent of abuse that I was about to get when I saw them packing up to leave. Got away with that one as I hate confrontation.

I suspect the thing is that the type of dog owners who let dogs off their lead at the park/beach/campsite knowing they will likely do antisocial stuff are the same ones who can't be arsed walking them enough, so letting them off the lead is the best way of getting them to run off some steam with minimal effort.

As a 'Responsible' dog owner that always has plenty of poo bags, if I see abandoned dog eggs where I deem them inappropriate, if i just tut and walk on does that make me as bad as the person that let their dog crap their or should I pick it up after them?

Ours is also always on one of those spiral ground screw things when we're camping as I know full well he'd wander off. Other folks dogs winding my dog up pisses me off, just because we have a dog doesn't make it ok for yours to come wandering into our van & awning. Sod Off!

(is that STW grumpy enough?)

Stayed on a campsite earlier in the summer. Spent the whole weekend plagued by the sounds of 90's dance music coming from a group of rotund sunburnt blokes with mountainbikes, a T5 and one of those massive "event shelters".

You're not F*** Tiesto you fat T.

They didn't have a dog, so obviously, all non-dog owners on campsites are ignorant B******.

Pfft, OP you think you have problems....

We recently had a group of campers arrive on our local football field. They decided to tow their caravan and tents up on the field with their shiny 4x4's and transits. They then started to discard their rubbish around the perimeter of the football field and defecate in the bushes and paths. None of them cleared up the rubbish they left and the human faeces they left was shocking, can you imagine how a friends young daughter felt after getting covered in the stuff?

Why can't humans and campers in particular clean up after themselves? None of them take responsibility for the mess they leave. Have we reached peak human/camper numbers and when will this insanity end?

Genuinely think there is a kind of Dunning Kruger style effect whereby campers consistently see their own as being much more of a ‘good human’ than the reality.

Moral dilemma! I wonder the same sometimes, especially when tip toeing through a minefield of turds to pick up after my dogs, but the sheer volume of unbagged crap deters me. I have picked up a few by mistake (cold and clammy) before finding the right one (warm and smelling of pot pourri)

I mean, I'm confused by all the layers of sarcasm going on now, but aren't there threads all the time saying exactly this? And no one gets all up in arms and says NOT ALL HUMANS

Isnt the real problem that camping is a bit shit in general? You have to mix with other people who may do stuff you dont like (dogs / guitars / techno). Either camp away from other humans or get a nice B&B.

@blackflag yup pretty much which is why they’re grumpy buggers, as they try to kid themselves it was definitely worth it. Sitting in a field with noisy neighbours, people pissing in the hedge as it’s too far to walk to the toilet, “oooh the cloud will pass it’s just a shower”, “it’s only a few midgies”, “anyone for another pot noodle?”. All dog owners fault of course.

I think the problem is that most (not all) dog owners don't realise that the rest of us don't love their animal as much as they do. My son and his friends stopped playing in the local park for three months after an aggressive dog chased their football and burst it. It frightened the life out of them. Of course, when I went down with them and kicked it in the muzzle when it tried it again, I was the villain according to the owner.

OK, rational post.....🙂

Stayed at the National Trust campsite in Eskdale all last week.
Full of absolutely lovely dogs and their owners, a genuine pleasure to see such a variety of VW Campers breeds and considerate owners on the site.

But the little footpath between the road and Boot, which cuts off the amount of time spent walking on a dangerous road?
Not usable due to the amount of freshly laid dog turds.
The people who behaved so well when under observation from the NT staff on the campsite obviously couldn't care less when left to their own devices.

So not just urban areas then.....

most (not all)

Great name for a thread. We could have most (not all) dog owners whining about most (not all) campers moaning about most (not all) cyclists grumping about most (not all) drivers wailing about most (not all) caravanners groaning about most (not all) real rural types ranting about most (not all) fake rural types fainting about most (not all) urban types bickering about most (not all) hippies harping on about most (not all) humans?

It’d be amazing? Also could subdivide the stereotypes to keep it rolling? ie Most (not all) sprockadoodle owners whining about most (not all) bell-tent campers moaning about most (not all) gravel-cyclists grumping about most (not all) Audi-drivers wailing about most (not all) Transit-drivers barking at most (not all) wood-fired pizza advocates sneering at all (not most) Crocs-wearers?

Then possibly move on to all (not most) sheeple complaining about all (not most) antimaskers/antivaxxers pointing at all (not most) remainers pointing at all (not most) Brexiters. Any lull in bickerage could be instantly enlivened by lobbing a ‘fragmenting grenade’/common enemy*

It’s the future (not all of) and the past all (not all of) rolled into one handy format!

*ie Plant-burger/new style of slipper/some expensive foreign flour/a cheap bicycle…

Of course, when I went down with them and kicked it in the muzzle when it tried it again, I was the villain according to the owner.

You kicked a dog in the face for attacking a ball. You should have kicked the owner in the face for letting it’s dog go after your ball.

In either scenario my heart goes out to the dog.

Yeah but those campers are from urban areas aren't they?

p7eaven does have a point. Most of my campsite whinging is reserved for the late night party crowd. No it's not everyone but it doesn't take many to ruin things for everyone else.

Anyway it's not just campsites. Yesterday I witnessed 3 dogs taking on a hen in a pub beer garden. The owner wasn't best pleased.
