It is actually, during the world cup people in certain area's of the UK were asked not to have them on their car's so not to offend the multicultural taxi drivers.

Is "bollocks" an acceptably anglo-saxon word for a response in this context?

I resisted for a while then read the OP, but none of the thread beyond that.

"Person in expensive car throws litter out the window" seems to sum it up.

Is any of it worth reading?

Well got a few more bites tonight, hope I get this many at the weekend round the lake.

And thanks for the history lesson's, they really bored me

As Winston Churchill, Gor'Bless him, might have said, if he was still around, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat emails from their pals in the EDL in the hope that someone breaks cover and agrees with them.

Is anyone left on this thread actually English??

Nah - I'm officially an Irish traveller nowadays (mum and dad owned a caravan, which appears to qualify me).

my point about the empires is that you move towards homogeneity even for a really long time, but then as soon as the unifying influence disappears the differences return.

It's probably not just a case of the differences returning but that empires create the conditions for that to happen. What better way for the colonial subjects to resist the metropole than to maintain their own language even in the face of persecution. Perhaps it is the nature of past empires which we have to thank for the current level of nationalism?

Interesting point. From what I understand of the Roman Empire though large chunks of the upper and middle classes were far too busy enjoying the perks to worry about independence. Much like that Life of Brian scene.

In any case - we should not try to go back, only forward...
