it strikes me that clever people dont laugh as much, dont enjoy as many films, songs etc etc...

i have a sneaking suspicion that life is more fun if you're not as smart as mr boring IQ.

also dumb people seem less likely to feel superior to others, which i like 🙂

I used to dream of being completely ignorant of all things political/economic/social so that I didnt care about such things of get frustrated at the futility of it all.

Then I bought two chainsaws and I now have far more enjoyable things to think about.

I suspect you have a point.

Not that I'm bragging, but I don't laugh much. 😉

We don't laugh as much, we just appreciate and discern instead.

Sounds about right to me.

I've always suspected that anyone who is bubbly and happy just doesn't really understand the full picture 😀

Actually I remember a Jerry Springer episode where they brought in a load of blondes and brunettes to work out who had more fun.
It was very clear immediately that the blondes seemed to enjoy themselves a lot more but what took a little longer to establish was that they were all complete numbnuts.

Now obviously this could have been designed and no-one was claiming blonde people are inherently thicker than everyone else but they did seem to have more fun simply because simpler things entertained them, and entertained them for longer.

My biology teacher at school always used to describe me as "FDH" - Fat, Dumb and Happy. It really stuck with me.

I guess that neatly encapsulates what you are saying, and also clearly places me in the relevant category!

Maybe you just don't know any genuinely intelligent people. I'd say being intelligent, enlightened and knowledgeable gives you far greater scope to enjoy life, than being ignorant and stupid.

Actually studies have shown that IQ has little bearing on well being or happiness.

PS I made all that up as I assume you are all to dumb to check 😉

I think being smart just lends itself to cynicism which ultimately will only make you unhappy. I find those who are bubbly, cheery and naive far better company generally. I don't think of myself as being particularly smart but I do think I am tuned in to things and therefore have a natural cynicism. I'm not as happy as I would like to be for that very reason.

Does IQ = clever though?

I suspect that it is a flawed test.

In any case "cleverness" is relative so it really depends who you are talking to / interacting with.

Do I win £5?

Ignorance is (most probably) bliss.

Being even slightly knowledgeable means knowing there are people with far more knowledge than one's self, and that alone is enough to make one unhappy.

definitely think there's a difference between IQ and wisdom...

Maybe you just don't know any genuinely intelligent people.

not sure about that, i know quite a few people with high IQs 🙂

Being even slightly knowledgeable means knowing there are people with far more knowledge than one's self, and that alone is enough to make one unhappy.

i respectfully disagree, i'm glad there's people smarter than me 🙂 they invent things, cure things and make decisions i wouldn't want to

Very true. IQ in isolation has little bearing but certainly in my experience being socially and emotionally intellectual can and does have a detrimental effect on mental well being.

Does the fact we're here answering this, instead of getting all gnarly on some rad single track laughing our butts off, put us in the 'intelligent, but not fun' category?

Yeah, but if I was less intelligent and more fun-loving, I'd probably be doing something fun - if less intelligent - and enjoying myself a whole lot more. 🙁

Nope

In my opinion people are generally predisposed towards fun and happiness or misery and depression

People are also either intelligent or not so intelligent

I don't think the two things have any particular effect on each other

Intelligence may have an effect in so much as you may be more aware of how futile it all is. Or, perhaps that's just the acquisition of knowledge?

And I laughed a bit, then had another Percy Pig and un-paused the X-Games on the sky box.

Oh dear 😐

I think I've just categorised my self.

I agree.

But I can see how someone of limited intelligence could think otherwise. 😀

Well, if we go by the logic that claims ignorance breeds fear breeds hatred, and hatred makes people angry and subsequently unhappy, then isn't it better to be enlightened and educated about matters?

IQ tests are not a reliable way to gauge intelligence. Too many variables between individuals, that cannot be accounted for adequately.

Of course dumb people are happy.
Imagine being able to turn on the telly and find loads worth watching.
Imagine going on a £10 Sun holiday and really enjoying the entertainment.
Imagine turning on any commercial radio station and laughing at the zany DJ and making a note of which record is by ****wit featuring mc shit brains.
Imagine finding just the right clothes in primark.
Imagine the feast you can enjoy in McDonald's.
I could go on but I'm thoroughly depressed.

I've always thought it's good to not know stuff, means you're still learning and there is always more stuff out there to find out about. I think I'm relatively thick or relatively smart, depends who I'm talking to at the time, but it's definitely somewhere on a line of relative-ness! Sometimes I feel like I get an insight into life and the horror and inequality is astounding, which is depressing. Then sometimes I have a moment and appreciate the true wonder and beauty and I'm YESSSS!. I'm crap at maths though! It's an interesting question Philconsequence. Maybe we should all get frontal lobotomys and just grin and drool 😀 makes me think of a chap I work with and socialise with who has a learning problem (or whatever it's called -lack of oxygen at birth), has the kindest nature and is generally always optimistic and in a good mood. Happy in his job and doesn't really seem to think about anything too much. I dunno how he does it.

My brother in law and his wife are both extremely clever physicists working for Northrop Grummond in LA but they have more fun than anyone I know (often revolving around car racing) and are great people to play computer games with over a glass or two or red so no.

Ignorance is bliss.Or so they say.
I sometimes suspect I'd be happier if I understood less.
I try and compensate by not giving a toss.

doesn't matter where you go, or what you do, there are people far more knowledgeable or more skilled, intelligent etc than yourself. It's all relative. Is it intelligence to acknowledge this fact? or sitting back in yer dunce-ness?

I find what defines intelligence interesting.

Recently went to a conference with a 'thought leader' professor. Proper high brow discussion around chaos theory and why certain project management methodologies are more appropriate in certain circumstances. I could feel my IQ grow just listening to the guy.

Would I employ him to deliver something? Absolutely 100% not. No chance.

Kind of where the idea of EQ comes in.

Anyways, wine fueled ramble. I find most people I regard as 'intelligent' are not outwardly happy, they seem to feel that they haven't lived up to their potential and keep striving for more. Whereas the not so gifted seem to be happy treading the same path, over and over....

I'm sure that clever people enjoy rubbing their genitalia, looking at kittens and putting on warm socks* just as much as they like Challenging Literature, Real Music and Friday Sudoku's.

Unfortunately there is a cornucopia of things at a BBC3 / any form of advertising level which will make them slightly embarrassed by the lack of ambition we possess as a species.

*Of course these are not to be done at the same time

Edit - there is a certain point where things seem to be to highbrow and take too much effort even for me. lots of "Culture" smacks of deliberate and tedious elitism.

Stupid Black Cat Mark II has spent hours and hours and hours over the last week chasing his own feet, and he still hasn't managed to catch them. He seems to be the happiest little cat in the known universe.

I, on the other hand, am (just) intelligent enough to be able to catch my own feet on the first try (mostly, depending on the level of whisky consumption), and I spend a considerable amount of time feeling grumpy and / or stressed.

Must be true then 😀

thing is, my idea of "dumb people" won't even be on here to comment, it's a good OP but now just stw navel gazing bollox really isn't it? and strangely, Tazzy is one of the people I take notice of on here rather than the supposedly "intelligent" arguists! what does that say about me :/ anyway, everyone should try n have fun. otherwise what's the point? sometimes it takes effort to do just that..

I find that thinking about things too much is one of the things which makes me unhappy - to the point where I really hate being in situations where I have plenty of time to think (and why I sometimes waste so much time on here, as it provides a distraction). Though clearly that's an anecdote, it's possible for less intelligent people to think a lot about stuff, I'm only assuming I'm intelligent on the basis of traditional views on intelligence as an IQ thing - oh, and I guess I might do better if I had happier stuff to think about.
