Wow. I really wish I was you- clearly you have a lifestyle losers like me can only aspire to.

You say that iike it's a smart remark, but I can't think of the last time I was in a pub with people on Facebook, so maybe you are actually correct.

All I can suggest is that you get some new mates. For me, an iPhone in the pub gives you the opportunity to say "shall we go and see a film?", rather than just being stuck with your pint of mild.

So could any mobile made after about 1995 - it's called texting.

And if you mean by tweeting/facebooking/etc, any phone with internet access (most phones) can do that - even my very old and very, very crAp Nokia N70.

I'd say smartphones give easier and quicker access to these things but that's all it is. I still love mine though - and hate myself for "falling" for one. Dammit. I wanted to stick to old coal powered tins on a string just to be different...

Faraday cages around all pubs, that would be a step forward.

Fair enough MrSalmon, but I still draw parallels to the mobile phone. How many people thought they needed one before they became popular?
How long did they have one before it became essential and changed the way they lived?

A smartphone means you have the web, email, calendar, tv, radio, music collection, movies, camera, games, sat nav, utilities etc with you at all times.

These are very useful things to have, whether folk realise it or not.

Absolutely, and when my current phone breaks I expect I'll get one (although probably not an iPhone- a mate's HTC looks pretty good). My point (which seems a bit hazy now) was more about some suggestions on here that you must be living how people did 20 years ago if you don't have an iPhone.

OK - I missed the bit where you can check the film times and see trailers by texting. My bad.

Surf-mat: i suspect he means something more like: fire up the "Now Playing" app to see the cinema listings at all the nearby cinemas, read reviews and watch trailers, then book tickets on the cinema website, check the location on Google Maps, use AroundMe to find a nearby bar to meet at and some other app to check the bus times.

Touche. Still, it seemed to me that a lot of your posts on this thread were looking to set iPhone (or equivalent) owners like yourself up as jet-setting, bleeding-edge free spirits and people who aren't quite so fussed about them as plodding dullards.

Maybe 🙂 But really I am just a bit surprised that people seem so keen to avoid seeing the value of something when (from my point of view, anyway) it stares them in the face.

I see people in pubs talking and drinking, not FBing.

But I agree with DrJ's last. I think it's a reaction against hype to be honest. I hate hype, and I feel like hating something that is being hyped. If I found an iPhone in the street and had never heard of it, I'd probably love it.. but that hype does something to your like/dislike brain area.

Do all that at the pub with any mates I know of and they'd have made their excuses and walked off.

Nothing like some overexcited i-phone owner bleating on about what his phone can do while failing to realise that no one gives a to55.

Yes mine can do all that too but so what? It's hateful seeing people buried in their i-phones when they should be talking to their mates.

No one cares - i-phones are good, so are loads of other phones and products that do the same and more. The owners just don't seem to feel the need to bleat on about them - this is what put me off them for life.

Really?

Would they also have walked off if you instead read the local paper for the listings, asked the barman for a pub near the cinema, called the cinema to book tickets on the phone then walked to the bus stop to check the times?

Have you considered that maybe your mates just don't like you that much? 😉

And yet here you are, bleating that "Yes mine can do all that too" 🙂

So just to summarise it goes:

Haters (Hate the iPhone with an impressive level of zeal)

Regular Users (Just use their iPhone.)

Fanboys (Love the iPhone with an impressive level of zeal)

Mleh a true fanboi loves it purely because it is Apple.

A normal fan loves it because they find it useful and enjoy making pointless forum posts while sitting with a baby on their chest and a glass of wine in their hand - but doesn't hold any particular love for Apple and would be equally enthusiastic regardless of the manufacturer. 🙂

"Check in when I get there in person."
Good for you. You like queues, I don't. You have time between flights to spend checking in, I sometimes don't. That saves me time and money.

Obviously your experiences are different to mine. Last few times I've flown I've checked in online in advance (on the way back using WiFi with a netbook which enables me to do far more things than an iPhone or iPad, but was cheaper than either), yet when I've got to the airport I've had to use check-in machines to print baggage tags. No queue at all for the self-service check-in machines though.

I always thought the fanboy thing was a myth, an exaggeration, but reading DrJs efforts make me think it's probably true as a true thing...

I always check in online. You get better seats, less hassle at the airport. I tend to do it at home tho before I go, and I usually have a full computer 🙂

Except that you had to find some WiFi to use it. And presumably you don't carry it everywhere you go.

We have a netbook. I can actually see it from where I'm sitting. I'm still posting from my iphone tho 🙂

WiFi which was readily available where I was when check-in opened - not like it's particularly hard to find anywhere you can get 3G coverage. Having bought one I'd take it whenever I was travelling (it broke so I sent it back and haven't bought another one due to lack of cash, but that's another story - I'd get another one before buying an iWhatever).

Like jamie's summing up. Neatly condensed. FWIW, I went from an XDA Mini to a Nokia N95 v1 to the iPhone. The differences were startling. I had been reading articles and reviews on PDA's and smartphones for some years, and bought each phone on the promise that each would provide me with the functions that I wanted. The XDA was pretty much crap, except for the slide-out qwerty keyboard, which made texting a breeze, but attempting any kind of web access sucked beyond belief, it was just a brick in my pocket. The N95 again promised much, but the OS was clunky, navigation slow and not intuitive. Battery life was just a joke, two hours music playing took the battery to the red line, GPS use was useless due to needing the phone slid open, or else a BT receiver which ran the battery down even quicker, and phone calls were difficult to understand due to the crappy buzzy speaker. Then I got a 3G iPhone. Now, I'll be the first to admit that it's not perfect. Few such electronic devises are, but this phone has come closest to providing the features and usability that I've been wanting in a portable pocket computer. Some of the missing functions arrived in free OS upgrades, some will come in the next OS upgrade, many more will come in the next phone upgrade. Many of the current batch of smartphones like the Nexus One and Desire simply wouldn't exist if the iPhone hadn't been introduced; it's spurred radical developements in touchscreen and OS technology that just weren't there before. I don't sit in the pub on Facebook, but I have been known when out on a ride or walk to take some photos then chuck them onto Facebook and/or Flickr. I do sit in cafés and read books on my phone, something that would have been unthinkable to me eighteen months ago. I also surf the web and spend time on here at such times as well, which I also never thought I'd be able to do except with a laptop and a modem. Also, having Viewranger available on a phone that's so easy to use is just fantastic. Coupled with all the other free and very cheap apps makes my phone just an incredibly useful everyday tool, it's not a toy. If all I did was use it for playing games and going on Facebook, then yes, but there's just so much more to such things. As far as Apple overcharging, all I have to say is, isn't it just so unfair of AUDI to charge so much for their cars, they should be pricing them like Lada or Daiwoo then more people could afford them. The point is, Apple products are, and always have been, premium products. I regularly see people on here recommending jeans that cost anywhere up to £100 or more a pair when you can buy a pair for £10 from Tesco. See the point I'm trying to make here? It's all about wanting to own something that's just nice to own. I've got a Sony Bravia 40" TV; I could have just bought some own-brand model from Currys, but I wanted the Sony, because it's a lovely piece of kit. What's so wrong with wanting quality in your life? Why should I settle for second best, just because someone else thinks I should?

A firmware update sorted the GPS on the N95, your phone speaker was faulty if it buzzed, and my battery life was about 4 days in bad receptio areas, and I could lsiten to music for about 6 hours or so.

Having said that I didn't like the phone cos the OS was indeed clunky and unreliable.

That's why I went for a 5800, cos it has a more up to date version of symbian.

And it's not complaining about nice kit, it's complainig about the seemingly mindless fan-boys who get all tribal and personal about it.

Nobody does think that though.

They do however think that you might be getting just a little bit obsessed with your phone, the same phone that millions of other people have, the same phone that anyone can have; it's just a phone.....

The Paradoxes Of An iPhone Owner:

People who tell you that they aren't defined by what phone they have, which is why they don't have an iPhone.

If you defend it when people attack it then you are a mindless fanboi, if you don't then it is evidence they are right and you've clearly wasted your money.

People who say it's a toy and a fashion accessory - but if you point out it is a actually a useful tool then you are an obsessive.

People who post on threads about Apple products complaining that everyone is talking about Apple products.

Me too. From my iPhone. I can check in from my hotel room, choose my seat, and get a barcode boarding pass so I don't have to queue at a machine, or at a desk when the machine doesn't work. I just go straight from the taxi, or train, or connecting flight, or whatever, to security.

Free WiFi you can use without bothering to register?

I'm going to come back to this thread in a year and a half to see how many people are still surfing with laptops and net books.

Just like my 'day 1' iPhone, I think there will be a lot of people who have conveniently forgotten that they have changed their opinion. Forget your pre-conceived ideas and open yourselves to the future. It's fun.

I may well have a xyzPad in a years time...it won't be an iPad though...I want more freedom in what I can do with my own devices, formats I'm allowed to use etc
I do own an iPhone...it's good but still plenty of annoyances which I'd like to be allowed to customize.

I think it's a reaction against hype to be honest. I hate hype,

But Apple are famous for keeping new products top secret before they're launched, not for hyping them.

Even if all the secrecy is a clever kind of inverted marketing ploy, it wouldn't work if the product was crap, would it?

If you are technically savvy most of the 'restrictions' on an iphone can be removed.

I tried that for a few months and slowly discovered that Apple were right in the first place so went back to nice bog standard.

It must be hard for leading edge companies like Apple. 85% of the time they are spot on... failures (in my opinion) include...

Mice - Yes.. all of them
Apple Hi-Fi
and others I can't quite remember now
