Hammadou Djibo Issaka drew comparisons with swimmer Eric the Eel from the Sydney games, when he trailed in more than a minute and a half behind the race winner in the single skulls repechage. But his efforts drew huge cheers and applause from the crowds at the Olympic rowing competition at Eaton (Sic - Telegraph typo, not mine!) Dorney as they willed him across the finish line. The 35-year-old only learned to row in April, but gained a wild-card entry to the Olympics thanks to the organisers’ commitment to “strengthen the principle of universal representation”.

Djibo Issaka thinks his performance could mark the start of a new era for rowing in Niger. "There are many people who want to start rowing because I have come to the Olympic Games," he said. "We will start when I get back. We just have to wait for the boats to arrive."

WIN!

He spent 8 minutes 39 seconds in a scull, huge respect to the guy. I managed less than a minute on each of my various outings.

Sadly my efforts to get a wildcard entry to the synchronised swimming team have not worked out as well...so far...

He's certainly drawing up isn't he?

Sculling is fiendishly difficult. Only ever brave enough to try it twice. I did have an early February dip from a double once. Scarily cold it was. Fair dues to him.

Having come within >.< of several dips in the Thames whilst rowing racing 4s and 8s out of barne elms in my youth.

Respect, even the qualifying time is beyond most of us.

🙂

As above, I doubt I'd be in the same day as the rest of the field, let alone only a minute and a half or so back!
