I've got an accumulation of old hard drives, some of which make ominous cracking noises, others of which are e.g. ATA.

What's the recommended way of disposing of them?

There should be places around that will recycle them. Whack them with a hammer first if you're concerned they still have data on.

Drill a small hole in the casing and then squirt in some expending foam. Or, cut with a brazing torch. Or de-gauss properly.

Or, just like me, never throw them away.

I strip them to salvage the metal (for reclycling) and just smash up the ceramic drive plates and bin those (NB They break into 100s of tiny shards).

Are you particularly concerned about the data on them?

Throw 'em in the bin. No-one is going to be crawling through landfill looking for broken domestic hard drives.

You say that, but my friend salvaged two working Amazon tablets with account / credit card info intact on them....
