With the current thread on Fearne Cotton, I couldn't help but wonder what happens to those fairly talentless celebrities who seem to be big for awhile, then disappear.
When I first moved to the UK, for example, Jayne Middemiss - a former 'Page 3 girl' (ugh) - but seemingly nice person with the best accent - was everywhere. Now, she is nowhere.
Then there were all those presenters who did the property shows, and others.
What happens to these people? I mean, it's not like, having been on tv, they can just drop out and get a job at the corner shop. But some really seem to fall off the radar.
They choose another user name and carry on as usual.
🙂
I mean, it's not like, having been on tv, they can just drop out and get a job at the corner shop.
They do sometimes. Apparently Geoffrey from Rainbow (you probably don't know him) drives a taxi now.
Joe Cocker used to be quite popular.
Don't hear about him so much these days.
Wonder what he's up to?

Some choose to disappear - others have a shelf life and are right for the time.
John Deacon from Queen is barely seen in public.
And Simon Groom (Blue Peter) was everywhere when I was a kid - but he went back to farming and is doing rather well at it.
Nick Hancock?
Big Brother.
An ex-colleague of my dad was good friend’s Jayne Middlemiss apparently she is lovely.
Bob Carolgees runs a Candle shop...
His website is properly 90's Geocities style. Almost as good as Lings Cars...

need to spend more time over on "OK" Mags website...... all these things are covere
- commercial / local radio / tv
- opening / closing stuff / events
- living off their earnings / investments
John Deacon smashed his precision bass at the end of the Freddie concert and said Queen was dead or somesuch I think I read. Would love it if he wrote an autobiog though, warts n all.
We've gotta have a brainstorm of names now.
How about Gary Wilmot?
Russ Abbott.
Saw Gary Wilmot playing Fagin in Oliver a few years ago.
He was very good.
Michael Barrymore.
People like Russ Abbott were pretty big and are now getting on, so they presumably made enough money to retire like normal people do.
Gary Wilmot is a better example. Apparently has been a stage actor the whole time.
OP - are you aware of the Internet?
Andy Crane. from the bbc broom cupboard.
OP - are you aware of the Internet?
Pretty much just this place. Oh, and the GCN show.
Michael Barrymore.
He's got a new sitcom apparently.

Generally, 'celebrity' is fleeting and there is most likely a fairly long queue of media trained people coming up behind the current faces at any given time. I suspect that anyone in the spotlight has to do as much as possible as quickly as possible before they become too old / unreliable / are no longer attractive enough / a more 'relevant' person appears etc. I would imagine that some are lucky and / or financially savvy enough to be able to pretty much retire on what they made in the good times topped up with occasional lower profile work. There certainly seem to be an awful lot of 'brand ambassadors' who get paid a surprising amount to apparently do very little these days. Otherwise most will still be working in all sorts of walks of life. An awful lot of band biographies that I read seem to end with one time major players in various alternative music scenes now working in run of the mill nine to five jobs, and I'd imagine that it is probably the same for a lot of short lived minor celebrities.

MC Hammer.
The members of Musical Youth and Five Star.
John Leslie.
Thinking about this, I can only speculate as to why Jim Davidson isn't on this list. He bloody should be.

Chris Tarrant.
That comedian who used to say chase me. Duncan something?
Lee Evans.
But some really seem to fall off the radar.
Some people move from national to regional TV, so can seem to disappear if you're not in that region
There are other jobs in TV other than being in front of the camera - some might own (or own stakes in) production companies. ^ Chris Tarrant for example ^
But some can move into crew work - I work from time to time with a former soap actor who's now a script supervisor.
Apparently Geoffrey from Rainbow (you probably don't know him) drives a taxi now.
It used to be the case that work in children's telly pretty much torpedo'd you're career - he'd been a pretty busy jobbing actor until he took that role, but its difficult to be cast in anything serious afterwards. Presenters now seem to be able to make the jump from kids to adult TV, not sure if actors/performers can though.
'Ooooh, what did happen to that nice girl off the telly?'
Christ, it's more like a geriatrics tea-party every day around here.
Whilst researching this subject I was pleased to learn that Basil Brush has his own Wikipedia page.
Most shocking thing on Geoffrey's wiki page is that Rainbow was still on in 1992!

Dementia, I think.

Has made a fortune on the cruise liner circuit apparantly.

Blame Thatcher. His USP was impersonating Prime Ministers - if she's smoked a pipe he'd still be on telly. 🙂

'Zammo' frm Grange Hill runs a Timpsons Branch doing key cutting etc.
What happens to these people?
The sort of people who care about these things would probably avidly read a weekly magazine, sort of a partner magazine to Heat. Maybe called Gone Cold or Goodbye or something. You should start one, you'd be a millionaire.
Derek Hatton became a property developer in Cyprus.
I'm not really into the whole "OK" 'Celeb' stalking thing, but a friend of my wife works with some US stars and you hear the odd thing - I find the mechanics of the industry, what happens behind the scenes fascinating, it's almost the opposite of how it's portrayed in the tabloids etc.
The hard truth is that to stay in the minds of the public and remain marketable is incredibly hard, forget all this nonsense about how they're running from party to party trying to avoid the Paps, it's nonsense unless they're massive film stars, even the likes of One Direction (I know they're not a thing any more, but bands like them) are doing PR every day, and being 'caught' coming out of a bar with a 'mystery women' etc is all part of that.
The difficultly for the Jayne Middemiss' of the world is that they can't generate the sort of money the music and film types can, whilst Ant and Dec can make millions a year (because they own the production co etc) someone like Claudia Winkleman might 'only' make £500k a year, it puts her in the top 10% of TV stars in the UK, but if 'Strictly' ends next year she's not got long to find another good job before her profile starts to slip, 2-3 years and a bad job later she might never been seen again, you can't spend £250k a year on PR to secure a £500k a year job, minus tax, agent fees etc.
Some just quit, they've made a pile of money, paid off the mortgage, pension etc - retire in their 40s, stay out of London and you won't been seen in Heat or OK ever again unless you can offer them a pound of flesh. Despite what some say, they can just walk away from the limelight whenever they want.
Some go the full Partridge and see out their career in an ever descending spiral until they're presenting the early morning show on some dire local commercial radio station for old people.
Aye, John Leslie being a wee bit rapey didn't help his career.
Gary Rhodes was all over the telly at one point, I'm sure he'll still be making a fortune, but at least the smarmy **** isn't on my tv any more.
Ditto Worral the thief Thompson.
Remember Plain Jane Super-brain from Neighbours? You won't believe what she looks like now. Apparently.
😆

I believe he's a manager/ agent type now
Thinking about this, I can only speculate as to why Jim Davidson isn't on this list. He bloody should be.
I think he admitted a few years ago that most of his right-wing 'comedy' was a sort of performance art and in real life he's a nice guy and tried to reinvent himself as a more modern comic, but the dye was cast and it didn't last.
Believe it or not he's still on tour, still performing 5 nights a week to smallish venues and selling his annual DVDs to Britain First types because "he's the only one who tells the truth" probably slowly dying inside as he sells his soul for money.
I think he admitted a few years ago that most of his right-wing 'comedy' was a sort of performance art
If he claimed to be trolling audiences and to have an IQ of 175 then it still wouldn't suddenly make the Chalky gags forgivable. The BBC inexplicably gave him the helm of two prime time Saturday entertainment shows with Big Break and the Generation Game. He came across as an utter tit back then and still does today.

Quite a few bike shop owners were celebrities in the cycling world at least, for a few years.

I think Bob's sold up now. I did see him in Morrisons not long ago though, I guess these people must still eat.
People like Russ Abbott were pretty big and are now getting on, so they presumably made enough money to retire like normal people do.
I'm pretty certain Russ Abbott was acting in Shakespeare plays relatively recently (and very well reviewed too).
Pam Ayres.
I'm sure she had a Radio 4 series a few months back.
Ben Elton.
Is the writer of Upstart Crow, currently on BBC 2 for a 2nd Series.
Lee Hurst?
They are all teachers
Spit the dog continued for a few years without Bob Carolgees, but is now found in insurance adverts on the Internet, looking a little worse for wear
Richard Stilgoe.
Retired from live performances, heavily involved in charity work, his old family home is now used by Orpheus Centre, which he set up, to provide study programmes for young disabled adults - its a great project.
His son, Joe, performs and is very good.
Ben Elton

whatever happened to the nearly legendary Sally James?
In a cage in Tarrant's basement, dripping tears and custard.
Lee Evans

also hated being sweaty
Oooh... Sally James covered in custard. That used to be many a teenage boy's fantasy.
Pam Ayres.
Still workingh, radio and live performances

He's still busily acting away but in TV stuff that doesn't get syndicated internationally
Goldie Hawn
She's still in as much stuff as she used to be - she's never actually been that prolific though
Steven Segal
All round nice guy.
Does mob money funded straight to dvd efforts.
Mike Myers
Living on the streets.
Demi Moore
With a career based solely around acting talent, good for a lifetime like Judy Dench, no?
Kevin Costner
Made pots of cash by making machines that cleaned up Deepwater Horizon. Owns a themepark & casino. Funds politics. Bit of a 9-5er really.
Goldie Hawn
Just made Snatched. Still successful? You decide.
Rick Moranis - took a break from acting to raise his kids when his wife died, turned out to be a very long break and he's done very little since, I think largely by choice.
Nick Hancock - took time out from "the industry" when his kids were young too - came back, but not to the same extent. I think he was selling financial services for a while.
Sad truth is "that nice young woman" from the telly will get a bit older and be replaced by the the next 'nice young girl'.
Mike Myers ?
Still prolific in Film and TV I think you’ll find..
