We designed something very similar into a domestic adaptation project we did. They really are a great idea.

Why not just have the lift there permanently?

Planning, listed building, conservation area or just a client that has a special interest or money to spend.

Looks like a whitehall government building.

Something very similar on the tv he other night in Edinburgh. The lady lived in a listed building so had no other option other than to move as her condition got worse. Was that yours mikey? As the father of a disabled son I always have an interest in anything like this. But this was an extra special piece of engineering, so hats off to you if it was. Awsome.

The general idea behind them is equal access for all and therefore if you have both walking and wheelchair traffic on the same route, you can accommodate them both with minimal disruption to either. An able bodied person doesn't want to have to hang around for a lift every time (not to mention fire regulations).

In that case, as others have said, it was most likely a planning issue.

It's not a government building but it is close to Whitehall

I didn't see the programme, but I don't think so. The one we did was in a fairly normal house, lived in by the disabled person and her able-bodied family and carers.
