Hi

I have a front tooth crown that is ten years old.

It is now chipped and needs a replacement. My dentist has suggested a dental implant now which I feel is the best option but also the most costly.

My question is; how do I “shop” around to compare cost but also quality of the work without incurring lots of consultation fees (if this is possible)?

I am based in Harrogate if this helps.

I had an implant on a front tooth about three years ago and it's been brilliant, although not a cheap option. I just went with my own dentist because I didn't view it as something where I wanted to cut corners, but I know some people do shop around and some end up going abroad for it.

One thing, my crown was *significantly* older than yours and mine was ultimately my only option (other than a denture, which I had to wear anyway while the implant stuff was settling) since the old tooth in the jaw had cracked. Personally I would have kept having the crown redone before having the implant because parts of the process were a bit brutal (bone graft anyone?) but maybe that was just my case. You might be at that "no option" stage already,...

All that aside not cheap (£3k or a bit more?) but so glad I did, touch wood it stays that way!

Work colleague went to  https://getyoursmileback.co.uk in Bucharest for two implants - said it was cleaner and more professional than any dentist he's ever been to in the UK. Implants look absolutely spot on and they're the proper expensive German ones. He couldn't say enough good things about them.

He recently went to his local dentist back here, who did X-rays, and even they remarked on the quality of the implant work. Definitely worth a look. Think he paid about £1800 for two implants including all travel, etc.

I went on the recommendation of my dentist, as they didn't have their own lab facilities to carry out the work.

I wish I'd done my own research! Not an easy thing to do though...

Reason being, though they were thorough, even gave me a tour of the lab, the actual dentist who fitted the crown was a really horribly mannered slime ball! (Think a horror movie version of Harry Enfield's Dr. Phillip)

When he asked how it felt and I said I could feel something wrong at the back he got all snooty! Then, after a few months, a section splintered off the crown... funnily enough where I said it felt wrong... then he tried to say it was chargeable, but they'd be so nice to me that they'd replace the crown for free!! I really hope I don't have to go back there, bloke gives me the creeps.

Anyway! 😆  - I'd recommend asking around to find recommendations!

I have 6 front teeth implants (nasty accident years ago)

I had maxfax surgery at the time, plus the teeth implants. They are 15 years old and two have become loose and had to be reset.

Mine were done in hospital, due to the surgery. But the remediation works always been undertaken by local dentists, who mostly have been very good..

Recommendation is the best option, I do know a good dentist in Harrogate BTW.

Got my one implant done in Berlin, I went to a University Hospital and got it done by a Dental tutor. It just meant that student dentists got to take a look and do some of the prep work, take photos etc. But it also meant it only cost me about 1800 euros.

These students are in their final year so they are going to be let loose into the world of dentistry within a few months so I was not worried about them working on my teeth. They got their credit and I got some dental work that is way better than aything I could have got in the U.K.

My wife has had a couple after a dentist made a mess of root fillings.  Takes a few months from start to finish as the socket for the tooth needs to heal bone around it, then the tooth can be fitted. She's had no issues since. Certainly not cheap. Over £4k 10 years ago.

I have a friend who does them. He’s meant to be extremely good and he’ll be taking a look at one of mine soon. For private patients he works out of Tadcaster - if it’s post surgery you might get it on the NHS out of Leeds Dental Hospital (not sure on that though).

Great, thanks very much for all the help. Seems like a lot of options to consider.

Which dentist in Harrogate by the way please?

regards

As above with the Berlin University Hospital, I had work done at the Dental Institute in Leeds that's linked to LGI years ago. Final year students with all the latest wiz bang equipment overseen by tutors at all points. They were great so might be worth enquiring as to whether they still offer it.

people used to go to thailand for dental implants etc, I believe BUPA etc sent them there. Prices there have gone up, but people have been going to Cambodia for dental work, Australians could save thousands,

There are some excellent  dentists there, with all the equipment, trained in New Zealand etc

What a price per tooth, do you get extras with that?  Maybe a coffee and Cosmopolitan. Visit to the dentist today £16 but then i have 3 hidden corries in my mouth a bit like Beinn a' Ghlo

I wasted loads of time visiting different places and comparing prices and in the end went back to the first (and most expensive one).

The NHS wouldn't do a single tooth even as a front tooth trauma injury, had to be multiple teeth to qualify. There was a prospect of going to student clinic at Manchester but after 2 assessment visits I realised it wouldn't work for me as you had to fit in with their rigid timetable, it would require many visits and the administration side was hard to get in touch with and a bit disorganised. The cheapest clinic I found appeared to be poorly organised, didn't answer the questions or deliver the information the assessing dentist had promised, so didn't trust them. A BUPA one was almost too relaxed, didn't foresee any issues with my case which had alarm bells ringing as this didn't fit with the message I'd been given at the other assessments.

Once I started , I must have have had at least a half dozen appointments plus a yearly check up with the implant dentist in addition to my regular dentist checkup. The real shame is I moved further away during the process which  made it troublesome. If I had to do it all over again I'd find someone decent close to home in preference to saving a few hundred (/ thousand !) .  The tooth is excellent and I rarely even think about it now.

ok, a couple of things. There is huge variation in quality in both implants and bio materials used for grafting.

Secondly everyone takes the same driving test yeah? same for implant dentists they all take a similar course to qualify.  Ever had a bad trip as a passenger in a car? then you understand my point.

You want recommendations, followed by history/longevity/evidence.

As you're in Harrogate i`d (she) suggests getting in touch with Neoss (head office there) and speak to the regional sales rep.

She/he will have sat in hundreds of implant surgeries (far more than than most dentists perform) and will have a very short list of people they would allow to work on their mouth. You want one of these, they will insist on using the best/most evidenced products and have a reputation to protect.

How do i know this, wife is the regional for an implant company here in he south west and she has seen work by dentists that ranges from utter shocking to wow what skill. I`ve chosen "wow what skill" for my implant (next month) despite the almost double cost (2.5k). A good implant will last twenty plus years and be trouble free if looked after.

You are having something inside your body that will possibly be with you until you die. DONT cut corners.

Final point, dont think someone from a hospital is gonna be any better or more skilled than a private dentist. The max fax guys only place in cases of trauma and dont get long term follow up etc. As stated above you cant get them on the NHS. Implant dentists have far more eperience (once established) and are usually better at the aesthetic outcome due to having that as their primary goal.

If you want a contact number pm me, we mtb regularly with one of the most qualified and respected implantologists in the country. Unfortunately hes in Bath.
