cannot work this out
if i put the laptop into sleep mode then wake it up the screen goes blank then on the righthand side of keyboard a monitor button lights up, nothing i do will bring the monitor back to life unless i hold the power button down and turn the thing off then restart
any help to get over or around this

On my Dell the power button slowly flashes. I just press this once and wait a few seconds to come to life.
Don't do it?
Joking aside, I've had so many problems with Resume on laptops over the years that I generally just fully shut down.
When you say 'sleep' do you mean sleep or hibernate? If the latter, could be a corrupt hibernation file maybe?
Is it a new laptop that has always been doing this, or was it ok before and it's just started this annoying behaviour?
Have you made any updates recently that you can system restore to before? Have you turned systems restore on....
